@HuLiXD The 1st version I heard was the Towner piano-guitar duet from "Diary." I saw Towner do this on solo piano & it STILL sounded like several instruments.
Well, My favorite version is from, Iron Maiden," Icarus " now that's a hell of a song, cause this one suckth! But that's just my point. To each it's own.
wow, this is so beautiful. This reminds me of a lot of them progressive rock / metal bands I've listened to. Opeth, Dream Theatre and Periphery just to name a few.
I remember this from the Ralph Towner record "Diary" (ECM), released around '74, in which the main theme is played on piano, which gives it a wonderful chunky energy (excuse my lack of technical terminology), Anyway thanks for that - a beautiful piece which evokes fond memories.
Been listening to RT since the early 70's and even to this day almost 40 yrs. latter his music is still timeless. Never gets old. Never gets dated. Truly amazing musician.
This song from the Paul winter Consort days on the album Icarus was my coming of age song. If I was sad over my first love or in the throws of happy elation with my first love, It accompanied me there like a wise uncle {:> The tearful release was allways so healing .... Respect and Thanks!
I had a chance to interview Ralph when he appeared on an interesting channel called "Fine Tuning". He is witty, intelligent, funny, inventive and a master guitarist and composer. He could not believe the convergence of sounds and rhythms and music from all genres on Fine Tuning. The channel was dropped from the lineup but was much loved as it merged classical, rock, world, jazz to create a sound all its own. Perhaps we can all converge and get it back on air.
Anybody heard his work with Joe Zawinul's Weather Report on Vertical Invader (or is it I sing the body electric) also can anyone tell me what the beautiful Les Paul style guitar is on the left is please,,,
@mariavasilei Yes but Ralph wote it and most of the consort's material. The live LP 'Road' has THE best version. The Apollo astronauts played it on the way to the Moon!!
Perhaps one of the most inspiring compositions ever written! Always touches the heart no matter the version and to me captures the hope of dreams, faith and redemption.
this song is always wonderful, got probably a dozen versions...this rendition is,well..."beyond", they dont even seems to b improvising- to me-rather remarking lines and parts already in the song
13yrs old, went and saw my first Paul winter Consort show at Marist College Poughkeepsie NY.with my dad Gary Dean Decker. Icarus was a universal song, As my ego and Id wared , my 13 yrs old brain just figuring out how to balance it all out. I would play this song when I was happy or sad . It would meld and reinforce the reality of life. Invigorating me!!!
cool : )

Just, Plain GORGEOUS! A rich, beautiful and delightful rendition of what is doubtless Towner's best known work. OUTSTANDING!

One question: does anyone know what tuning has Towner's 12 string guitar here? Nobody knows!
paolomanueldec 2 years ago
@paolomanueldec
Looks like standard tuning. Check the E9 chord right around 3:10.....
No one makes the 12string luminous like Towner.......brilliant!!!

I love this trio (esp Ralph) but two things annoy me:
1) The guy working the camera in the beginning focusing on the wrong guys in their improv
2) Wolfgang's level seems to be too low compared to the other two...

Yeah you're right man, the cameraman is a musically idiot! They are great though.

Is there a DVD of this concert?

that is such a wonderful song. I'm wondering why only Wolfi takes a whole chorus?

Hi E - this was part of a full concert which featured Ralph Wolfi and Slava equally. I'd say the gentlemen decided to give this one to Wolfgang.
