  • that not lava!

  • "They're stuck!"...TAKE A PICTURE! hahahahahahaha

  • Lava is a place

  • wat lava ? that was water

  • u save them if ur so brave. if u tried u would get stuck and drown to!

  • That's not lava! That's Willy Wonka's Chocolate river!

  • TAKE A PICTURE YAYYY ...THERE FUCKING DROWNING YOU SILLY WHORE

  • @TheFanta913 u ave them u would get stuck do

  • What exactly would you suggest she do? Dive into the rapid and "rescue" everyone? There is absolutely nothing anyone standing on the shore can do in a situation like this.

  • @kertokmb

Well I suggest her to get call for rescure?

Oh sorry that I didn't realize the fact that she don't care about them.

  • Instead of helping them YOU TOOK A PICTURE WTF? MAN it would be diffrent if they falled down from a bike on the road but from a boat on a sea and you dont help them WTF Is this shit?

  • @Okan195

what the fuck do you expect her to do?

You want her to jump in and rescue everyone? As another guy said, there is nothing anyone on shore can do in a situation like this. Keep in mind that phones dont work well in canyons.

  • Fuck, I thought I had balls when it came to rafting.

  • thumbs up to the camera woman holding the footage still and not freaking out like so many other videos

  • who dies in chocolate?

  • where's the lava?

  • Oh THERE STUCK......Ill take a picture! GO FUCK YOURSELF!

  • HOLY FUCK THE LADY HOLDING THE CAMERA IS LIKE: OOO MY FRIENDS ARE DROWNING, LETS TAKE A PICTURE!!!! HOLY SHIT HOUSTON, WE FOUND TYHE DUMBFUCK OF THE YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I know where I'm NOT going, right into the monster hungry hole that's gonna have me and my boat for breakfast!!!!

  • holy fuck that's crazy. They got completely thrashed

  • This is why whitewater gets a bad rap as excessively dangerous. Inexperienced, unknowledgable amatuers on the sticks putting their passengers in harms way. I punched that hole in my kayak, and wouldnt recommend it to any raft that hoped to keeps its people or cargo. That was one hell of an irresponsible decision by the boatman. him and his passengers are lucky

  • i can't really seem to understand your reaction to something so terryfing like this. Take a picture? You do seem quite worried at the end of the video but girl, wtf was wrong with u at the beginning? Those ppl could have died! You could have asked for help inmediately!!!

  • americans are sick

    and sick

  • @teofilonieve yeah because we're ALL like that... shut up and stop congregating us all together.

  • thats freakyy but soso tight ,wish i could tell that story

  • Called the lava more like The lava hell hole!!

  • omg there about to die ill stand here and make a video

  • Is the Lava Hole okay?!!

  • Nice :) Thurs a big ol hole

  • What level was this running? I ran it once a long time ago at 45000 cfs. Saw one guy I knew as Kamakazie Ken, (who later died in a low head damn in Long Island) go right down the mouth of it in a kayak. He did survive, but without his helmet, sprayskirt, paddle, glasses , and the only reason he still had his life jacket on was he covered it in a long sleeve T-shirt with a Japan Rising Sun on it. All rafts ran well left. I caught the left side of the big one and was one happy screaming dude.

  • @polarhumenn Not sure what the level was on that trip. I did it a couple of years later at 20,000 CFS and it seemed about the same. AT 45000 you must have had quite a ride. I've heard that at those levels, left is the only way.

  • Wow, i could definitely hear the worry in her voice.......i hate ppl like her,,,,

  • where did they go? are they alive?!?

  • @CommonDisaster97 I wasn't on this trip myself, but the perople who were assured me that all the boaters came out OK. They were sucked to the bottom early on and spat out downstream. Scary, but one way out of a hole. This hole is big enough that that is proabably the only way out.

  • For some reason, a few years back I shelled out a few grand to go hiking, kayaking and rapid-rafting up near Mt. Katahdin. The hiking and kayaking was fun. The rafting? Not so much. Damn near died...twice. Personally, I feel you'd have to be stupid, insane or suicidal to go at stuff like this with a smile. I only went because it would feel like I wasted my money if I didn't participate. I was flung from the raft, and had some of the skin on my calves "removed" from friction on the rocks. F.U.N.

  • oh my god there stuck!!! no shit thats why its called the ledge hole...

  • there stuck !! take a picture!!

  • wow, what a mean swim that would be at that level. Good video except MUTE the commentary

  • wow, what a mean swim that would be at that level

  • Ledge hole in lava beat down, damn gina. Ripped the frame off and popped a compartment.

  • It's a crazy feeling when you know that your life jacket is nearly useless... Even a type V only gives you 25 lbs of flotation. Gnarly.

  • @NavySEALxRay, There is nothing anyone on the bank can do for them as the hole is too massive and far from shore for rescue. Fairly sure everyone washed through. There's too much water volume to keep anyone in that hole too long. As far as filming is concerned it makes absolutely no difference to the outcome.

  • Number 1 rule of filming: don't stop recording untill everything is over (even if you need to help)

  • teach them rafters not to raft in my toilet!!

  • Omg There Stuck!!!! ...... TAKE A PICTURE

  • your going to get sucked down even with your life jacket of and they ran the hole to show how nasty the hole realy is

  • Keep it rolling that is what I always say. That looks crazy.

  • Seven people died.

  • Got to love raft Carnage

  • Grand Canyon - Lava Rapid. INSANE hole! With that kind of hole, you are helpless...... even with help. Pretty much at the mercy of the water. Hope they all made it ok.

  • Even if they would have put the camera down - -what could they have done? Nothing! That is a pretty incredible hole and a violent surf.

  • oh my f***ing gosh are the ok

  • omg where they at/?!?!?

  • holy shit are they ok!

  • Wow thank God they lived

  • yee haw.

  • omg...omg...omg...omg... TAKE A PICTURE! what the heck?!

  • @Lucarioman200 LOL i was confused by that too

  • I wondered the same thing... what the hell are you thinking to take a picture of some people possibly drowning?

  • How about some hard paddling before the fall?

  • i hear there's cacti and mountain lions in the ledgehole... musta been what popped the tube.

  • cool!

  • Lol, "quick take a picture" the camera women is sick

  • Yeah, maybe this guy WAS looken for a THRILL eh? Good Grief!

Just glad everyone made it out alive and well with QUITE a story to tell!

    PEACE from ~Micki~ AKA ~SWAY~

  • fail

  • The boatman was an extremely experienced guide. With thirty plus years of experience on big western rivers, plus dozens and dozens of Grand Canyon trips. This video shows that all boatman, no matter their experience level, can be humbled in a few seconds by any river. In this particular incident the simple mistake of leaving drag bags in the river caused the boat to be pulled off the bubble line. Realizing the mistake too late the command, "abandon ship," was not taken seriously by the clients.

  • oh i hear ya...i was just going by what i saw in the video. i understand how fast things can go from fine to really bad in a matter of seconds, been there done that.

  • Well... Bad line, wasn't pulling hard at all to stay on the bubble line... More than can be blamed on leaving the drag bags in. But it does show that experienced boatman are humans and can have bad runs, and very bad runs.

  • man, runnin the ledge hole in an ol fixed floor celway. those boats are pigs but that run is not the one to take there!

  • I think it is really lucky none of the boaters got caught in the sinking frame, straps, or luggage. Imagine trying to swim that with your foot caught in the frame. We just ran Lava last week, 2 boats took the left route no problem, 4 took the right -- (Mr. Toad's wild ride). The last boat got flipped after the oarsman got thrown out, but we fished them out at the bottom. Nothing lost off the boat - good tie down job.

  • that sucks the frame and everyting in the boat came off

  • these guy 's were just lucky to be alive, they weren't rowing as well !!

this shows they were not experienced enough for lava falls.

    most people don't survive ...

  • stupid fucks, what the hell were they thinking??

ooh ill just go through a bus eater with my little raft, what on earth can go wrong ??

and now the stupid crying bitch got's her awnser, they fuckin drown !!!

i might let it sound very hated but it's the truth !!

don't go through lava falls if you don't have enough experience.

those bus eaters must be taken right in 1 time, and if you don't ... well they will find your drown body miles down stream.

soooo think before you do it's very simple.

  • i'll be there in about 20 days, takin' the v-wave to miss the cheese grader

  • im going rafting tomarrow i hope i dont get stuck

  • Fuckin rafts. "oh my god where are they?"

  • How did they get stuck? Rocks?

  • They got stuck in a river feature called a hole. Its is basically a whirlpool turned on its side thats what held them.

  • Holy cow. HDA boat. How old is this video? We've got a surplused AzRA boat, which was also a former HDA boat (though not this one). 18' Rogue. Jeeze...

  • I want to punch her in the face

  • rowing would not have helped...if you go into the ledge hole the only thing that awaits is certain doom.

  • Rowing doesn't help? Have you never run a canyon? Rowing would have made all the difference.

  • cmon, the ledge hole is freakin HUGE!!! the entire setup for the right line is based on missing that gigantic hole. i agree that ther guide was a total gaper! i've never seen a gear rig go into a hole loaded and come out stripped completely clean, not even a cam strap hangin....amazing

  • I was a passenger on a 17 ft non-self baling raft in 1974.

Ran the Colorado at high water during Easter vacation (14 day trip)

Our raft set up too far left and hit the hole at the top.

I was pulled out of the back of the raft when the bow of the raft hit the wave and the back end was pulled under.

This hole you see in this video held me under water despite having a heavy duty lifejacket on. In fact, I 'swam' most of Lava underwater, popping up like a cork only to be pulled under again.

  • Will it burn my mouth? It will destroy it. Hot Pockets!!

  • holy shit! did they survive? and how?!

  • the bitch was interesting in taking pictures , dont mind the people!

  • ah, so obviously you would have dived in to save them .......? How could she possibly have helped?

  • people always criticize the photographer for not helping, like they're the only person around.

  • I was a paddleboat guide for one year and ran the Grand in an oar rig at the end of the season-I was as inexperienced as you could get and I DID NOT hit the ledge hole in Lava. All ya gotta do is line it up on the right and push straight through. This guy was a gaper! Especially when there are consequences like that!

  • Read a few of the other comments. I agree and disagree. I always push hard into big waves with holes that will hold you. And it only takes 30 seconds to drown. Most of the time you get washed out quickly but it may seem like a year. I know a lot of people that go for the biggest holes in the river no matter what. I prefer to stay in my boat. So far so good... well at least for the last half a dozen years. The worst thing was the frame and gear were not rigged well to stay in the boat.

  • Or high temperatures?

I don't understand. Help me out!

  • Is that really lava?

    That is cool.

  • It's the Colorado river through the Grand Canyon. The particular set of rapids is called "Lava Falls", the most challenging rapids on the river. It is rated class 10 on the weird rating system used only on the Colorado river, equivalent to about Class V using more standard whitewater ratings.

  • Unbelieveable! Thank God they're ok

  • 1. That is some f***** high water 2. why did they enter sideways? 3. Even with the cfs why were they coming in so quickly? The oarsmen could have easily pulled them into the eddie over to the right OR slowed them with the oars.

Glad everyones ok :) scary moment

  • WTF? Thank god everybody survived....

  • owned

  • mmm... the hole was hungry... at least lava falls isn't that dangerous

  • Wow that's scary but yet cool to raft down that river!! So glad everyone survived. How did they manage to escape the hole?

  • lol

  • first of all the guy rowing is not a guide, 2 everyone flips in lava, 3 no matter how he could have angled it, he was headed for the hole so the flip was inevitable, and 4th u dont need to get the boat moving that fast becuz the current is already moving at atleast 5,000 cfs

  • 5% of boaters MAXIMUM flip at Lava, and yeah, you better have the boat moving under power to take it through on the proper line or you're a cork and can indeed find all the trouble the river has to offer. The ledge hole where they hit is a wicked hydraulic. For them to have scouted it and then hit it is just poor boatsmanship or really bad judgment. Looks like his folly cost them a bunch of gear.

  • Bull... everyone has flipped in Lava or is bound to... I've been a guide on the Grand for a couple of years and was pretty much born and raised doing river trips and no matter how good you are, the river is better lol. Doesn't matter how long you scout it, things happen and the current is stronger and even though you know where you want to be it doesn't always work out that way... but he could have lined it up better. It's a humbling experience though lol!

  • Bull... anyone who has done the Grand knows that almost everyone flips in Lava or will flip. And no matter how long they spent scouting the kid got caught up in the current and no amount of boatsmanship was gonna help him out. And with the water at that level you don't need a whole bunch of speed, just align your boat and push into the tongue... And talk about learning the hard way- rig to flip!

  • dude, not everyone flips at Lava, my Dad had a private trip through there, four boats, no flips....sorry to burst your bubble.

  • thats the badest guide i have ever seen... you have to point out a strong angle in order to get the raft moving...

  • It takes an extremely low IQ to do what these people did.

  • Oh my God, they're stuck!! TAKE A PICTURE!!!!

  • haha wat a stupid thing she says and o there stuck jus say the obvious

  • dat was mean lol

  • dat hole owned dat raft

  • i hate that thats for me nightmare

  • Nice! never seen a raft windowshade! the guide obivosly didn't have a clue... no speed, in the wrong spot, sideways!?!?!? this rapid needs respect

  • Amazing!!!!!!

    Good commentary- lucky

  • The river was that color because it was rainy season and the side canyons/rivers (Little Colorado River...Paria River) dump a lot of muddy water into the Colorado. It is always clear when it comes out of Lake Powell.

  • If you fall off your raft into that hole, do you get sucked down, or is your lifejack enough to keep you afloat and whist you away down the river, or what happens?

  • In that hole you'd most likely be sucked down and spit out downstream. If you watch the video closely you'll not see any evidence of a person or lifejacket at all. The raft recirced because it had enough bouyancy to stay on top and get trashed. the people were lucky to get sucked down rather than stay in that mess.

  • @yakbas I personally was a victim of the hole at lava falls. i remember getting sucked under and popping up down stream. felt really cool. a little heart racing but definately a cool experience. whats crazy is it was my oar lady's second time to fall in 90 runs. her first time was her first ever run. everyone was perfectly fine since the river is so deep. just lost a bunch of stuff

  • If you're recirculated in a hole, you should swim for the bottom. The down stream current is underneath. The life jacket holds you up where the recirculation is happening. Taking your life jacket off in such a situation is a LAST RESORT to be used only when you are on the verge of losing consciousness. I have heard one story where it worked, on Three Oar Deal on the Snake in Wy.

  • omfg. Scary. How could that boatman be so far off the toungue?

  • That hole could flip anything at that flow.

  • That's awesome.

  • What do you mean "our boats are made for that? Nothing is made for the big hole in lava, you musta tested them at crystal in '83, right?

  • any info on what happened and how they made it, when they recovered

  • Oh my gosh Noo!! :[

  • why is the water so dirty?

  • It's the Colorado. All the turbulence keeps the silt from dropping, and picks up more along the way. It doesn't drop out until the water slows down, gets deeper, or turns into a resevoir.

  • This was during high flow, where the river is running about 5 times the average so everything is washed out.

  • YARDSALE!

(Not to brag but our boats are made for that kinda stuff. Once the CFS is high enough.)

  • how did they get out of this, did the current just push them out after a while?>

  • There's usually a flow out of the hole at the bottom so since no one was visible on top they were probably sucked down and spit out somewhere down stream - probably the best thing that could have happened to them.

  • Holy shit, hang on!

Nature is awsome! I did me some urban rafting but ya'll wouldn't know about that nor that you should.

  • I can't believe everyone made it out of that. Wow.

  • q buen rio!!! pura vida compadre!!

  • OMH!!!OMH OMH!!

I can't believe everyone lived! What sort of mental trauma did they have? Did they need counseling after this? Good heavens!

  • Great Footage! Stupid line! Either right or left, but NEVER EVER in the middle. Really love how the river strips the gear off the raft with such ease. Good thing Lava comes last.... watch and learn people...ab

  • Amazing I didn't know it was true, you really DO get trapped in the vortex.

That huge boat just kept spinning as if it were a silly toy.

  • That sucks, why even go that close to the ledge in the first place. Were they trying to punch the hole?

  • This is terrifying!! I went down the entire river with Grand Canyon Expeditions in the summer of 07. Upon getting ready to hit Lava Falls, our guide gave us special instructions, telling us that the water in this rapid "tries to pull you off the raft." I was scared to death. On our trip, Hermit Rapids was much more violent, and our raft went vertical into a school bus sized hole.

I'm relieved to know that everyone on this raft survived. Watching this was really scary.

  • Lava gets bigger as the water goes up. this was about 20 grand. The guide got too close to the ledge, and got sucked in. He shouldn't have been out that far after scouting left.

  • WTF?

In the entire 225 miles of the Grand Canyon, that is the very, very last place anyone should be.

I agree. They must have been stoned.

  • I think they're all stoned...

  • Stoned people would have stayed over by the shore and avoided this. The person filming was not part of the trip that produced this blunder.

  • Your right. Must have been Crack

  • Or drunk and over confidant

  • the person talking didnt seem to conserned

  • She sounded very concerned to me the way she said OMG

  • Sweet mother of chirst, that guy must have some bad river Ju-Ju cause he got CHUNDURED!

  • I was the truck driver who picked this trip up at Diamond Creek.
