well it depends how you look at it. i like to think of viking metal as just lyrical themes because for example enslaved is a black metal band and amon amarth is death metal but they talk about vikings so viking metal is not really a style but more lyrical elements. finntroll talkes about trolls and they are folk, but they definatly have black metal in their music so both folk and somewhat black metal too, i have them under folk though.
