  • Been trying to bend for a month now. Either I am crap or it is my harp. I can only bend hole 1. I use a Hohner silver star

  • well done bro

  • i really thought u were a woman 0.0 sry

  • Cheers Ricci.. really helpful. Re: using the 3-hole draw to play the whole 12 bar pattern.. just heard a great example on Two Old Maids by Shakey Walter Horton (just over two minutes in).. though he uses the 2 hole draw for the first chord:

  • all bending comes from the eyebrow obviously

  • I wish someone would do a lesson on blow bends that is as good as this. I suck at blow bends... I've searched, but haven't come up with much.

  • that last thing you did, that was insane

  • You sir, are not a woman!

  • I love how you take the time to give 9 minute tutorials on many different harmonica methods man. It really helps so much. Thanks a ton

  • This not woman ? AAArrgh

  • Lmao! ur mobile ringtone!!! hahaah.....anyways, thanks for the video, I'll see if I can figure it out and do a bending =(.

  • AGHAHAHAHA!!! Jina Fox! Ill have to call her back...

    freaking hilarious.

  • /watch?v=CjWww_K5V6M

  • You are an actualy virtuoso, I've picked this instrument up this morning at 9am it's now 17.43 I haven't stopped since and I can only get 1/2 a step draw bend ONLY.....:(

  • Please add make, model and key of the harp. pleeeeez

  • mexa fan, great job man!!!! veri inspirational! keep going!

  • hi man, your work is very inspirational, im a begginer, i started with a great friend from arizona, we are archaeologists, in the field season we are alone in the desert and the sound of two harmonnicas in middle of nowhere its beautiful.keep going man. i learned a lot with you.

  • S;good thanks.

  • Far out, that's fantastic!

  • can you bend a note on the exhail?

  • @MrCooterbruzer 1-6 bend on inhale, 7-10 bend on exhale

  • watched many videos but learning frm this one was outstanding....graet job..!!

  • your videos are very inspirational, i been practicing hours evr day since i started watching yer videos a few months ago..

  • thank you very much for recommending bendometer, great program for us beginners :)

  • What a brilliant harmonica player

  • Your amazing man!

  • I think playing harmonica is like learning to speak Mandarin. It's a tonal language, and the pitch is either steady, rising, falling, or a combination of these. I call that the trajectory of pitch, and this is what makes the harmonica a uniquely conversational instrument. And this is also where all the masters excel.

  • This video shows any harp player the importance on working all the blow bends available on the harp. As the harp is an instrument so easy to be badly played, is important to make people know things like what is shown in this video. Again, great lesson.

  • best ringtone ever!!

  • you have come a long way from South Jackson, MS and Monday nights at Fields Cafe...would love to see you bud....Bill

  • definitely a fan!

  • YO! awesome stuff, I would do that in the subway if I could!

  • Hey Jason Big fan i was wondering if you could explain how to a vibrato i cant seem to get a good one thanks

  • I thought this was a woman!

  • advanced bending . you are making it up as you are going along like all of us players.dont bullshit the people with what u got unless you are creating a field bendometer. i can do that but im not a chromatacism.158.100 listening ...dam.. lets not get that idea overblow .yes you did .been playing when you were a kid.they are not regular notes people.

  • amazing!

  • i dont even play harmonica and that was impressive

  • I've been playing 33 years, benefitted greatly from Gindick and Gussow's stuff, and feel blessed to be alive at a time when someone as good as Jason Ricci is sharing his absurd ability. My playing with bands has improved tremendously. THANK YOU Jason.

  • i thought it was a chick unti; he started talking lol

  • @ bigblindray .. Thanks a lott buddy .. Though I hv already bought a 'Hohner Golden Melody' Iin C .. And I can see the difference .. : ) ..

And thanks to jeson ricci .. I hv downloaded almost all of his videos .. These are verry enthusiastic even for the beginners .. keep it up man ..

  • @ 6:42 - "ting tang, tung, tonggggg...." *pause* "alright anyway"....HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh dude...It was like i could read your mind. So fuuny :)

  • Dude. Just went and bought Done with the Devil off iTunes - please come to Australia!

  • I hv bought a "hohner silver star" .. but now I found that its not good enough for the beginners .. what can I do now .. Wd I stick to it and try to play one note at a time before I buy a new one ... or I should buy a new one as soon as I can ?

I am having a feeling that I need to put too much pressure to draw in 2nd hole and the last ones .. Is it a problem of this cheap harmonica?

  • @dips2713 Silver Star harps are really leaky so yes...get a decent harp.

  • Thanks for this! I appreciate the clarity of your explanations and the unguarded way you share your technique. Hearing you play has inspired me to get back into playing after quite a long layoff. Thank you.

Thank you for giving it to us all!

    Wolfgang

  • not even funny

  • how do i make my notes sound blues style?

  • HI guys. I'm only starting to bend notes on a harmonica and I'm getting a problem that I haven't heard discussed. For all the world it sound like the harmonica is going into feedback. (I'm not playing through an amp by the way) I take it a reed is resinating at a very high frequency how do i stop that? Any suggestions.

Love the ring tone by the way very funny.

  • @Bluebuthappy182 Got the same problem, you need a new reed (cost as much as a new harp); you can avoid this in the future by playing lighter on your harp, blowing too hard pushes the reed out of tune -- it can also be corroded, either way toss the harp (or if of sentimental value, replace the reed).

  • you might be playing with too much strenght. Remember that you dont have to use force, its like breathing. The air don´t comes from your lungs but from your diafragm. Practice and you'll nail i.t

  • Thank you !!!

  • i really thank you for this lesson. in which key is this harmonica you've used?

  • do you tweak your harps so you ca bend easier cuz it seems like thats my problem they just stop making any sound or buzz like crazy

  • apenas empeso el video pense que era una mujer

  • I second that! Haha!

  • i bet his notes notes are not the only thing thats bent

  • @boassass buahahahahahhahaaha

  • great cat!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • wow i thought it was a gurl till it started talking :| . no offence mate. and ur lesson is great :)

  • ew, i bet the first thing u thought was, id fuck her, hahahaha

  • HAHAHA! ur JKZ

  • are you the new lester buttler ?

    Awesome mate

  • i wanna learn to, but how do i know what kind of a harmonica i have?

and where kan i learn basics

  • diatonic C, youtube,google,any fucking site

  • Impressive!

But I tried to download Bendometer, but I cannot open the extension (.jsp). How do you use this program?

  • great lesson!

  • yeaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!!

  • thanks jason all you're videos are so awesome!

  • When you play Für Elise to show the bend of 1 ( a half) you actually bend it a whole. :D

  • lmao i thought you were a chick in the beganing, good harmonica tho man

  • lmaooo i love this guy..aye yooo jasooon!! u go yourself a new fan..where can ibuy your music?

  • Hi Bird, Thanks for the comment, our stuff is on on itunes, Borders, Barnes and Nobles, Amazon, Cd Baby and stuff like that thanks so much for your interest. Keep playing.

  • @TheBirdy2fly .... what !!! ... jajaja ... same for me ... im addict to stevie wonder ... and he makes me introduce in the harmonic world ... curious ... i've started playing diatonic ... but wonder makes me think on a chromatic ... but later i see Jason ricci ... and i've started to think on a diatonic ... later i see ... howard levy ... and ... HELL ... this to guys are awesome ...

  • is it posible to bend if you are using a u blocking?

  • Yes!!! No problems there.

  • if this separates the men from the boys, I am only an egg...

  • simply top

  • I can bend notes "down", but can we bend notes up ? Thx

  • okay so this has nothing to do with learning bending, but I posted a video response labeled "Harmonica Playing" if you like the blues and harmonica check it out.

  • This man is one hell of a good musician.

  • I downloaded the bendometer but I can't use it because I had to sucrube or somthing . :(

anyway very good notes and the bending note are amazing.

  • I always wanna grab my guitar when i hear you play and jam :D

  • bending note has to be god damn hard for me!

  • Every time someone writes something like this, more discussion ensues, and my ratings and placement and subsequent partner pay ( From Google adsense ) increases. So keep 'em coming .

  • Eventually this outdated pedigree will be extinct, and despite the decreased adsense income, I think the world will be a happier place.

  • you need a life.twt2e its a valuble lesson free of charge. maybe you should leave the music buss, if all youre going to is judge people.

  • Fantastic tutorial, coming from a 5 year beginner. Very impressive playing. Thanks!

  • He is THE DUDE

  • david bowie!!!

  • Brilliant Lesson. Thanks for all your help.

I have never heard a harmonica played like that.

This is the first lesson that really makes sense and how these great players make those sounds which we just don't get or get by accident to some degree.

Im off to practice a bend lol.

  • Great lesson

  • manyakmısın nesin bilader

  • That is GREAT !!

  • Brilliant lesson-thankyou!

  • THANK YOU!

  • HAHAHAHA THE PHONE

  • Hey Jason, thanxs for the vids, your very good at explaining this stuff. Ive gotten to the point where ive got a fairly good command of all my bends, except for the 3 hole draw. Man im terrible with the 3 hole draw bends. i dont know if some harmonicas are easier or harder to bend the 3 hole, i have all marine band harps. thanx and

    Tony

  • wow that was amazing! im still learning to play but i cant seem to do those chromatic bend, im using a c diatonic. is it much better on an a-harp i mean is the reeds much softer so it bends easily? i dont know... man your great i wish i can see you live someday.

  • lol, maan you look like your well good at bending! lol

  • lol

  • hi i have a c harmonica its a susuki pro master mr350 hamamatsu japan 10 holes .

is it good or i have to get another one ?

  • It is good to have more than one key if not all 12 if your serious. And a Promaster is a GREAT harmonica!

    J

  • It is good. I play on a cheap Harmonica that cost about 3 dollar (10 holes), and I prefer that one insted of my 100 dollar harmonica (12*2 holes)

  • I wish I knew what he was talking about...

  • im seriously trying to nail this but my bends sounds like shit, especially on the 2 draw, and 3 draw.

  • Keep at and know those are hard! My bends and overblows sound better now than in most these vids so progress hopefully never stops. It on your bend. tuff but you'll get it! Try using a T/Tuh sound with your tongue on your two fron teeth

  • thanks J

  • You rock Jason.

    Phone too. Regards

  • I swere to gosh I tough it was a grrl by very ver first moment.

But only now I realize w00t ma BR bruddah meant.

Anyway, thats not right to make fun of the musician.

    You racist pig.

Preconceituoso do caralho... :D deixa o cara dar o cu dele porra!

  • fag

  • how long have u been playing the harmonica?

  • so do you tounge block when you bend? please awnser

  • Yeah! not all the time but many many do! mOst the old blues guys!

  • how long you play?

  • where did you get that ring tone of the cat

  • Hey It's an AT&T tone called "Angry Cat" It rocks at first then it bothers those close to you.

  • Thank you very much. Your skills blow my mind and the videos are helpful and well-done

    5 star

  • bicho tu é muito feio

  • man, I recently upgraded from my el cheapo big river harps in order to get the overblows--I got a golden melody, special 20, marine band and a couple of those firebreaths---but I'm noticing that on the big rivers it's MUCH easier to nail those half notes. takes almost no effort compared to all the other models. maybe it's because they're more broken in?

  • Hey Jason...Does your harp have to be any specific make and model? What do you use? Should it be well warmed up and whats the best way to do this? I'm using a Hohner blues harp in A, its the wooden sort..is this ok for this lesson?

  • Great ricci!!! Could you play the hole version of "fur elise"¿¿ it was great

  • I did learn it once upon a time....If you start in third you can play the Major section in 1st on the same harp! But I forgot it...Brady taught it to me.

  • Jason - I hope you can help. I have watched several vids on bending, including yours, and have "finally" learned to bend the 4 draw. I use a Honer special 20. For the life of me I cannot bend the 3 draw very well and cannot bend the 2 or 1 draw at all. Do I have to do something differently on the those 3 that I dont have to do on the 4 draw?

Any help you could offer would be highly appreciated.

  • Hi...Just keep trying while inside your mouth saying the syllables "EEEHH" "OOOOHHH" or "EEE-AHHH" it's defintly harder at first on the lower holes so be patient with yourself. ALSO try dong the above and hit your tongue on your front teeth saying: TEEEHHH TOOOOH". That helped me get my first two draw bend! Once you got it you got it.

    J

  • Same Here.I thought it was "HOT', and then realized it was was a guy...And I felt so dirty!

DUDE....try looking less "chick like" otherwise, pretty good shit!

  • Damn I thought that was a chick, before he removed the monica from his lips. nice work dude, a bit creepy, but nice... :D

  • hahaha me too!

  • Very very good!!!

  • Thanks for the instruction. It seems tedious at times, but it is obvious to us that aren't natural musicians, that spending the time on the basics is the way to true improvement.

  • this video is excelent

after this video im better at the 3rd hole bend. this 3rd hole neds a lot of practice.

  • Totally it does! It's still the toughest thing for me most the time. Hey, also check My Three Hole Draw Boogie shuffle thing...Thanks!

    J

  • This %§&%$ bending looks that easy on you. Think I've to do some more exercises...

    Thanks for spending your time.

    All the Best.

  • So my 4 yr old daughter comes home with a c harmonica from school... and I decide to mess with it ( been a working pro drummer/recording engineer for years) and I start blowing it... next thing i know i'm playinb some silly licks. So I go searching on youtube and i discover this killer series from jason... THANKS. I'm 46 yrs old, and more juiced about learning an instrument than I've been since i was 6. Do you have a legit DVD instructional series? If not... you should make one...

  • If you want to hear something bizarre and different, try singing into it while you play. When you modulate the blows and draws before they enter the harp it is absolutely wicked. Been doing it since late 70's. Harmonica Framptone?

  • mmm can you help me out?? i need to know what type of harmonica key to buy to play the blues??

  • there's no specific key you need to buy. it can be any key. what you should be asking is what brand of harmonica to buy. and to that i'd say Hohner marine band harmonica.

  • I was told my instructional books/CDs/vids etc are in the key of C...That's what i went for today (hohner Special 20).

  • Start with a C harp, unless you're specifically planning on playing with a guitar in which case better to get an A. If you can afford it, get both.

  • Awsome playing! You got any videos on how to do that vibrato with ur throat(like blowing a vibrato)?

  • probably cool but long - guess I dont have 9 mins :D

  • Jason, This is one of the best, most informative and useful lessons I have ever recieved. A million thanks and don't worry about me stealing any of your gigs. Thank-you, Jay

  • Jason, I thank you in that you are really an amazing artist. I am an intermediate harp player and the draw bend has always come naturally. The overblow bend is new and challenging to me. I have always played my harp "backwards" (lower notes on the right.) does this or will this impede my progress? Because for me it is just too late to switch! I appreciate any feedback.

    Peace.

  • can you blow bend on the 5th hole? on a C harmonica

  • No you cant blow bend on any of the holes numbered 1-6 on any diatonic harmonica besides the XB 40. You can over blow those holes.

  • If you're just learning to bend, this guy wins. But don't expect to play like him after a 9:54 video.

  • you perfer susuki over hohner

  • Nice ring tone man.

But that's some kick ass playing.. keep it up.

  • Now that is playing, Great Control, like the fast playing

  • Jason, is that an off the shelf harp, or has it been enhanced? Either way I am in awe of what you do with it.

  • Thanks very much. You doing a great job explaining what you're doing, and then doing it!

  • nice
