I was just driving past Marana AVQ this AM Feb 10, 2012, approx 12 noon, on my way to El Tiro and saw a BD-5 in the pattern. I could not tell if it was a BD-5J or not, but it sure was a sight to see.
No one since Jim Bede has been brave enough to try a design like this. Therefore flying remains only in the relm of the very rich, we still have the roads and the police to make sure we have no fun on them.
You can actually buy a kit to build these. I am a student at the Aviation Institute of Maintenance and we have one in our powerplant shop. Tiny plane, when we work on it we can set it on the work table, its more like working on a model than an airworthy vehicle. But it is definitely flyable.
@TortillaGaming I do not believe they come with an ejector seat setup... you could always make on though..... have to use a fighter jet as a model but im sure it could be worked out
@TortillaGaming Like most planes that are small in size, can be ran with one person, and are (average joe) civilian owned, NO. Probably costs way too much, and uses too much space.
What a pleasant video, the lone star colors meeting the blue yonder and these sweet but vivid banyo perfectly match the small and agile bullet the DB mini jet is.
Red bull owns this jet now and you can check it out in the "Red Bull Toy Box." They guy in the video is legendary Bob Bishop and known for flying the BD-5 "Coors Light Silver Bullet" on the airshow circuit. I've just finished a similar jet and put a video on my YouTube login. Enjoy!
@BenHaor It looks like the ADI is frozen. It may just be locked to keep the gyros from being damaged during aerobatics but that's just a guess. I've sat in this jet before and "Red Bull" is getting a beautiful and historic plane!
amazing. such little material is used to build this. you could fly around the world in this as long as you stayed over land to refuel and service the engine. you could build aircraft like this perhaps even lighter new technologies occuring. perhaps a smaller cockpit that fits the pilots like a glove or shell to reduce drag. if you were to have the pilot lie face down you could make it even thinner and smaller. we have the technology

it's a good design but I think it can be optimized even more.
it's rational to make it small, it becomes dramatically cheaper and it still moves you in comfort. those who don't get it aren't thinking.
it's a shame really small good aircraft aren't mass produced so everyone can afford a plane.
I've even considered a lifting body config such that it can fit a car foot print and drive as a car as well.
