  • I could have sworn they were a mowtown band . They sound wonderful!

  • CLASS classic !

  • Steve Winwood - one of the best !!!

  • If I had steve winwood and justin beiber hanging off the cliff and i was holding them by my hands then I would let go of justin beiber just to get a better grip on steve.

  • Holy crap

  • i love this song, i wrote a song borrwoing from the melody of the chorus. obviously you will never hear it, because you dont speak swahilli mthafckas.

  • A song, a voice....Steve Winwood is one of the best ever!!!

  • Damn, they were funky!

  • really enjoyed your video

if you get the time please check out my video

"more than words can say pete richardson"

  • Steve Winwood! He was, and still IS so fantastic! I had a major crush on him when I was 15 ("John Barleycorn" days - well past Spencer Davis era) and it's so great to find the bluesier, soul stuff from the early days. A lot of great UK stuff never made it to Canada, ("tell me all about it" Small Faces!) Thanks for posting.

  • The Ghost Goes Gear is long overdue a proper dvd release, with uncut scenes etc...

  • ytgh

  • great 2c them again, cheers

  • Good morning, do you like sixties? Listen and pod cast my program " great sound of 60' s " on the site plumfm. Greeting and made blooper in rock and roll.

Salut, vous aimez les sixties ? Ecoutez et podcatez mon émission "le super son des sixties" sur plum fm. Salut et faites gaffe au rock'n roll.

  • a friend of mine went to the same school as Steve...great barr in birmingham.....give him any instrument that he has not played before and after 1 hour he could!!

  • There was an interview with Muff Winwood, Steve's elder brother who plays bass in this clip, who said that from about the age of 5 Steve was extraordinarily musical. bowles123 is right.

  • Little Stevie did NOT buy his white Strats from George Clay music in Broad St Birmingham. I did the research!... so you don't have to.

  • Fab! ☼ ;-j

  • They were the coolest guys ever.

  • A white 58 strat...oooh

  • great song

  • how do you plug the amps on a boat? ;)

  • @mtwallet generator

  • Like this?

    Like this....greenheadman!

    :{>

  • very soulful for a group of white British kids. You can tell Steve grew up listening to the great American blues and soul singers.

  • ...Just like the you tube redesign...

  • yeah I liked of little brunnet girl, humm...

  • Yep, you're right Slideharp1, is does kick ass. The bass Muff Winwood is using is a Harmony H22 semi acoustic. I bought one of these in 1968 & used it through a Selmer Treble & Bass 100 amp, with 2 18 inch speaker cabs. Absolutely awesome sound. I still have it & it does getted gigged occasionally, although I mainly use my customised Fender P bass these days.

  • Like everything else on this; the Bass is kick-ass

  • jessiebess i worked with someone who looked like winwood and they never met but are related,it's a distintive look, she's in essex but winwood family based in midlands, birmingham i think

  • wow

  • Is this man actually famous??

My mum was adopted in 1966 and she has just recently found out this is her Dad! I have no idea who he was, was told to youtube it. Very strange! I am looking at my exact double! My mum sings just like him tho & she is a music teacher which is wierd!

No horrible comments please - just generally baffled =/

    x

  • Man, you serious?

  • yeah, see my pic. when it was taken i was the same age as he was then. its strange =/ very strange haha. he had a daughter in 66 who was my mum. but cos he was famous they put her up for adoption and my mum went to surburban family who had know idea. she is a piano teacher which is wierd . me, my mum and younger brother are his walking mirror. and before any1 asks i dont play an instrument haha which is criminal! specially as my dad is musical 2. a guitar teacher

  • Was your mum in the papers about a year ago? If so i saw the pictures and the resemblance was amasing. Steve Winwood is of course a legend to his generation and to those younger who are in the know.

  • @shelleys9I Yep! Her name is Fran=]

She is wearing my boots (my small claim to fame)

Her birth mum thinks I look more like him cos when she did the interview I was 17 which was the age when she was seeing Steve.

I'm not fussed to be honest, I've had my whole life of people saying I look like my mum, so saying I look like a 60year old man I don't know isn't that big. Nice for my mum tho=] she is powered by music. It's her life..now she knows why.

  • wow, Steve is really one of my favourite singers. I love his old band Traffic, my favourite band!

I've heard some tunes by your mother on her Myspace, she sounds amazing!

Has she ever met Steve btw?

  • That's amazing. Good for you. He's made alot of people happy.

  • mc cartney and winwood are two of the finest musician/songwriters/singers in the world but they're so different it's like comparing gouda to cheddar or or albert to bb. it's all wonderful. im proud of them both and their music is still soaring

  • Anyone notice this bears a close resemblance to Have Mercy by Don Covay?

  • when i watch him sing, it just amazes me look at how skinny he is! shit it is just AMAZING

  • he sounds like paul weller in this one

  • This video just proves how well Steve has aged, especially vocally...anyone who has seen him live in recent months can attest to that!

  • never heard this before!...what a treat!.what a talent stevie winwood was and is. recently got the dvd of winwood clapton in hyde park which is brilliant. thanks great posting mate

  • fanfuckintastic!

  • great video, but thats not a button down.

  • Nice song , nice video S.D. G .

  • When I was a kid ,my brother had some Spencer Davis and Traffic on 8 tracks.I really assumed Winwood was a black fellow until he did the Mtv vids!He has got soul.

  • holy shit me too bro, hes got the best RnB voice by a white guy ever

  • have to agree

  • agreed!

  • i always thought they were a mowtown band! lolol... i was so shocked to see a wee skinny white boy! still amazes me. singers like hime dont come along too often.

  • agreed

  • Damn :( You can't buy a good check shirt anymore. All you can find is these el cheapo copies from China which fall apart after the 3rd time in the wash :'(

  • Great song! I wish the audience could dance though.

  • he is gorgeous here ... love it...

  • I think that's why Mason left Traffic...Winwood just has too much talent....those post Mason guitar leads are outstanding....very underated

  • HAD no idea in 45 years that Stevie played guitar....WOW far-out man......i guess this is what Youtube is all about. damn song cut off...thats fucked. oh well....

  • I knew that he played guitar, but I thought that he took it up much later.

  • i wanna be at that swinging party

  • i was there.

  • i made thist

  • very cool.......

  • Is that a Harmony guitar - what is the bass?

  • Winwoods on a strat, spencer's on a harmony startatone jupiter and muff's on a harmony H22 bass.

  • winwood is a more talented a musician / singer than any beatle

  • Ah...ya, right.

  • Love it. They're like the Beatles, only better.

  • Better than the Beatles????? Time for your medicine now I think

  • Dream on PSX

  • Perhaps not the whole band, but Steve Winwood had/has more talent than anyone who was in the Beatles. That is the flat truth. Singing, Keyboards, and Guitar ALL better than anyone in the Beatles all in one package.

  • never thought of that..but i hate to say its true...

  • winwood is a pretty damn good instrumentalist, probably better than anyone in the beatles. But as for being a better songwriter than mccartney or lennon - it's just not true. Think of songs like "hey jude," or "in my life." Nothing steve has ever done has come close to these songs, in my opinion.

  • I didnt say the band were better than the Beatles,I said Winwood is a better musician and singer than anyone in the beatles.None of the beatles can sing as well as Steve winwood,or play a guitar or piano or keyboard like him

  • They are both great musicians and I love their music.

But, for the sake of debate, don't think Winwood is a better musician than Paul McCartney.

McCartney was a better overall vocalist imo, but beyond that, he wrote more, better, and more influential music than Winwood.

I'm going to take a step away from my last post and say that Paul is probably a better instrumentalist than Winwood, too. Steve is great on organ, but paul is probably way better on bass and guitar.

  • Yeah, the Beatles would have reached even higher artistic heights if that had Stevie on lead vocals and guitar. Are you kidding?

  • @bowles123 Both John Lennon and Paul MCartney were killers on the piano, and George Harrison was a versatile musician. He played guitar, piano, flute, sitar, and numerous other percussion and woodwind instruments. There is no title for best musician overall on any of these instruments. Everyone who plays them well does so in their own style.

  • @bowles123 They're just DIFFERENT, and equally good in their own right. Pointless comparing.

  • Winwood is so amazing at that young age.

    Amazing soul in his voice!

  • I just realized that this is slightly sped up from the way it appears in the movie, is there a reason why?

  • No. Straight from VHS to the hard disc and then saved as a MPEG4.

  • Fantastic band.

  • I loooooove that 60s look....

  • His voice sounds so much like Sam Cooke.

  • what a GREAT oldie !this is !love it thanx

  • cool song

  • Love the footage! I want to be there dancin in me boots!!

  • thanks for sending this li'l gem Lisa, have ya seen the St.Louis Union doin "English Tea" later in the same film?? 4kn excellent piece of Mod!! I'll try an send it to ya!!

anyone else that likes THIS should check it out too!!

    Lee

    Liverpool Mods.

  • For some reason, this kind of reminds me a bit of Desmond Decker's stuff.

  • Possibly because it was co-written with Stevie Winwood by a Jamaican singer/songwriter called Jackie Edwards. Jackie also wrote "Somebody Help Me".

  • I saw Stevie in concert back in March, with Eric Clapton. Winwood did a solo "Georgia On My Mind"-brought the fuckin' house down. He's still got it.

  • Great clip ! Thx for posting it.

  • i'm fourteen years old, and i'm ashamed at my generation for liking all this 'contempary R&B' shit. this is what R&B has always been about. real rhythm. real blues.

the mod & rockers styles will come back so i can experience kicking some greasy leatherhead's head in

  • Well the nice thing about the recent Le Beat Bespoké weekend in London was that Mods and Rockers were mixing together and simply digging good music whether it was Northern Soul, Beat, or RnR. Then again some of us have been into the music that we are probably too old for fighting and falling out. Keep digging those majestic sounds.

  • i have much to learn!

  • I'm 26 and I agree with you totally! The sad part is, much of that R&B garbage was created by people my age. Spencer Davis rocks!

  • @theold2007 as an Original 60s hippie biker I can honestly say these bands were loved by more than just the moddy boys, I still have all my vinyl 45s & DJ with them to re-educate people with real music

  • great, does anybody know which year exactly is it?

  • Eel Pie Island, London 1964

  • What a fantastic band, now this is R&B, not this crap that they call r&b now,

  • Excellent comment, and the sad thing is this has more soul and it's coming from a small english man!

  • Yeh yeh Spencer Davis Group. LOVE IT !!!!!

    Great voice, Steve Winwood.

  • one of the most amusing movies i've ever seen, and a charming song. i love the pollution of the water! and the teen extras!

  • What movie is this from?

  • The details are in the "About the Video" box to the top right.

  • HARMONY rulezzzz!

  • ich mag das lied voll!!!

  • Cool Song!

  • I love that blue check shirt....nice ....

  • Steve is an amazing singer, you could nearly compare him to Sam Cooke.

  • Thanks I loved it great band

  • good but songs stating to waver.

  • First time I saw this movie back in early 70's. The reason why I came to the movie cos I knew Spencer Davis Group.

But can somebody tell me who's the person doing songs like "Listen to the Jingle Jangle" and a man up on the tree singing "Mama...." in that movie? Wasn't that Steve Winwood himself ? Merci

  • so darn cool. This SDG's answer-tune to Hard Day's Night.

  • This movie "The Ghost Goes Gear" is pretty funny. It's kind of like the Spencer Davis Group's "Hard Days Night." It's strange seeing Steve Winwood trying to act, lol. The performances are pretty good, though. They do this song and "The Midnight Special."

  • Winwood could have been Britain's Buddy Holly -- a real prodigy of 18 who even before leaving school, had played organ with the best black US blues singers on tour in UK. But we also had John Lennon too - and no one could knock the Beatles off the throne. Also, being a well-rounded musician of genius, Winwood had no great neurotic need for crowd adoration. Spencer Davis too had big talent -- he'd graduated in German 3 years before. Hands up for a Spencer Davis Group Reunion! George

  • yes! that would be great!

  • I know why this is favourited so often.

    Soooooo MOD!!!!!

  • On the river Thames going past Windsor Castle, this is real, sounds great.

  • mister, you're a better man than i if you can keep still during this funkfest of wee stevie's blinding white soul. speaking as a staggeringly attractive and large framed black american man, this is excitement.

  • Firstly not "lucky" in the sense of "fortunate" more in the sense that,in many parts of Greater London, circa 2006,it is extremely unlikely!!

  • Steve Winwood was so cool here, he was like a teenager, smooth r n' b voice

  • He WAS a teenager when this was filmed in 1966.

  • That WAS Stevie Winwood!....Go to Spencer Davis' Website and U will clearly see the difference M8!

  • i know, never said it wasn't him

  • stuffy that wasnt steve winwood singing it was spencer davis the lead singer of the spencer davis group peace

  • Wrong.

  • how am i wrong spencer davis sang in alot of there songs

  • Oh really? What songs would those be? Check your facts, kid.

  • dust my broom, my babe, time seller obviously not some of there well known songs but he still sung some of there songs

  • Time Seller is from after Winwoood left.

  • I'm sure this one of the few times that the artists didn't lip synch in a motion picture. You'ver really got to admire that.

  • This is lip synched. Just cause there's microphones doesnt mean it's live. Where are the amps????

  • right behind them, guitars are even pugged in, too bad the drums aren't micked and on background vocals they sing away from the microphones, go figure

  • it should be a race thing, but steven can pull it off with his singing. if i didnt know what he looked like, i couldnt tell if he was white or black.

  • That's what I was going to guess, yet England can still "roll with it, baby"!

  • More to do with the fact that in London(for example) London was 98% English when I grew up....Now?....most have moved to The Suburbs...in many London Areas(2oo different Areas I would estimate) U would be lucky to see an "English" Face.....Peace.

  • How does this relate to the song? Why would i be lucky to see an English face?

  • When England really was England!..Why did it have to change?...Was one of the safest and friendliest places in the World then.

  • Maggie? Stevie was only 18 19 years young here! Peace

  • whos to blame!those in power

  • blame edward heath getting us into european union, supposed to have been a trading block not a united states of europe ,were foriegners dictate our immigration ..... hey great band though

  • Yeah, Soon it will be the Spengdish Davish Jihad-Group

  • it's that damned one world ideology happening right under our noses, although the leaders of usa & england and others deny it to the limits. but back to stevie, one of my faves of all time. i don't see "somebody help me" anywhere.
