James's vocal delivery was never as brutal as this album. And it went to shit afterward. After AJFA, his vocals and the band in general took a downward turn with the Black Album.  Then, they took an incredibly long hiatus, and the next album they put out after the Black Album - Death Magnetic - was a comeback, though James's vocals never came back from the turn they took in the Black Album. (Yes, you read that right - I ignore the existence of every album in between.)

I have every single Metallica cassette tape & now CD...this is one of the toughest statement to make but in my humble but expert opinion...And Justice For All is theGREATEST METALLICA ALBUM OF ALL-TIMES! It tooks 2-3 albums for them to develop & hone their skills to ultimately master a pure EPIC trash album. Not only that, the studio quality and Lar's double-bass really makes this album go! This album took trash metal to the next level...epic songwriting, vicious palm-muting riffs, etc. Etc. ETC

My favorite Metallica song... listening to the beginning, which seems about 10x longer than this vid/song (the slow ramp in volume) on a powerful system is just glorious... kind of like hearing the THX intro to old movies like The Abyss on a good sound system... modern recreations just cannot compare.

I was in 7th grade when this came out. I rember hearin it and thinking, my god this is what music is supposed to sound like. In my opinion this is the greatest metal album ever created. Nothing since has come close. That being said, I'd like to point out two things. First, when the black album came out a couple years later, I bought the cd, listened to it, and almost puked on my black leather boots. I took it outside, used it as a skeet and shot it with my 12 guage.

Metallica hasn't sounded the same since. The new Metallica isn't bad, but it's not the same Metallica. Second, as i listen to this song now, i realise that this is one of the most hypocritical songs i've heard. I love the song but it's about oppression of freedom, and Metallica led the fight when it came to oppressing freedom a few years ago. The freedom to BUY a cd and make a copy for a friend for FREE. Just my opinion though.

@ambnem Yeah, it was a hell of a lot darker. Purists complain about the somewhat "antiseptic" mix and overly-scooped guitar sound, but I think that was a big part in enhancing the dark, almost surgical mood of the album. I couldn't imagine these songs with an AC/DC guitar sound anyway. This album is my favorite of theirs.
