a lot of bands are using it, but most of the time it's used with a "normal" kick mic inside

the hole. This way you can make a really great kick sound.

Saw them live in 07, they were opening for Dream theater, Romeo was using horribly less stacks, he couldn't be heard at all but still Symphony X kicked ass!

it seems like if the voices needed... you know, effects... because the instruments are being played perfectly, even the guitar plays violin parts... and all you hear is being played by THEM (other bands use samples, and well, they can sound a little better, but i prefer to imagin SX are better, because they don't need samples to demostrate they are masters)

Here you can clearly see, that they are NOT a band suitable for open air gigs:D Also without those violas etc. their music loses a lot:( Sadly, since they, along with few other bands (DT...) are one of the most talented musicians ever.. They also look like having a stage fright - it all seems very hasted. But yea - almost noone knew them that time, so the pressure must have been insane:) Everyone looking at you, waiting what you will play...

actually it really sounds very poor. They shows today sounds A LOT better ! Not just for the amazing performance (in this video it's nice too) but the gear configuration and everything. Anyway, this MUSIC IS AMAZING.

You are right, but the thing is that in stadium or big festival shows like this, it can be REALLY hard to get a decent sound mix where every member of the band is heard properly in the mix to the crowd. Plus, Romeo is using a POD Pro with a Marshall Monobloc poweramp and two Marshall Cabs. Not the best live sound equipment. However, he still sounds decent on his own.

I'm a huge Symphony X fan and I actually agree with you.

They do sound empty, and those god awful backing vocals (was that Michael Romeo!?) make them sound like a bad cover of themselves. If you look at bands like Rush live, you'll see that they do use 'backing tracks' to fill the space and as a result, sound awesome.

But there live shows will definately improve with time, like all bands, and mabye they can get some normal backing singers.

I think this is mostly because what you are hearing is coming straight from the console...no ambiance, everything sounds thin.

Have you heard them live...they sound huge...they also use Samples, for some of the choir vocals and instrumental parts.

I do think they could polish their performance a little bit more, but maybe that looseness you see and hear, its what makes them great live.
