  • lovely shape......has an oriental feel to it with short neck and collar :)

  • I love this shape and you make it look way to easy! I've tried these and they are so fun to make and sell well...but they are still a bugger to make for me. The collaring in is always difficult and getting it round so nicely like yours, is also hard. Any more advice??? And thanks so much, keep up the awesome work!

  • Fantastic help, thank you!

  • I'm sure a lot of folks remember the 'Interlude" instead of TV adverts?? (there was nothing to sell back then)that had a pot making video(whoops film).

It's still good to watch making a pot in the 21st century, and your delivery is excellent.

  • is that some form of a kick wheal?

  • Cool - think I'll try this one in class!

  • Comment removed

  • Hi Simon! It's me again! I was wondering if you could make a demo on how to create glazes. My studio fires cone 10, but My professors are not very friendly, I'm kind of intimidated to ask! Thanks!

  • decent.

  • i will pay u for lessons?

  • I see a window reflected on the vase :D

  • very nice

  • This would have been much more helpful when I was in ceramics class, haha. Too bad I just graduated.

  • I love your videos! at school,i am going to get into a pottery class.I subcribed!add me please!

  • Is it just me, or do all pieces look bigger on the wheel than they are?

  • @Islandaholic it depends on the camera angle, some people have said i have huge hands , but it is not the case ! SL

  • @Islandaholic looks like the head of the kick wheel is smaller than a standard electric wheel.

  • @Islandaholic Wide-angle lens, maybe...

  • @wiesejay I went and looked at your video. You should totally make more!

  • gran técnica porque hace parecer muy fácil realizarlo

  • , GEnial,

  • Thank you very much for th video...it is truly inspiring.

  • I have two questions:

    1) How much clay did you use for this piece?

    2) When I bring the collar in severly, it tends to cause a rippling which can be hard to remove (without breaking the vase). How did you manage this with the neck of this piece?

  • @gfal1234 I forget to be honest but about 1 lb . Collar in gently not severely, wedge your clay better to start with, this helps the clay be more submissive. SL

  • is that water?

  • @missbree711 yes it is !

  • @sleachpots ok i thought so i jus got a new wheele thanxs

  • does it take a light touch to make these pieces or does it just look like it and youre pressing hard on it? weird question I know lol

  • @MountainQueen actually it's a little bit of both. At the beginning when you throw the clay onto the wheel you have to use a pressure, but not too much. From then on, it's mostly keeping your hands steady and not allowing the clay to "control" your hands but at the same time treating the clay piece like something delicate, especially when you're almost done.

  • @Msbkwrm oh thanks so much for answering, I was really curious :) your videos are great!

  • @TheFashionista99 keep going practice makes perfenct and i think that cool how ur gma has a potters wheel cuz my gma doesnt and wen im not at school so i can work with clay im wishing that i had a potters wheel so ya just keep practing

and yull get the hang of it

  • he he i luv tha duct tape on tha edge...

  • great job

  • makes it look so easy, a true master.

  • beautiful!

  • You did not do it rough and mean crack in the furnace must always do the right thing

  • I'm 11 and my grandma just taught me how to throw... My first bowl flopped around too much then well basicly the top became disconnected then i tryied again and Igot a Japanese Tea Bowl done in 15 or 20 mins. I'm throwing more tommarow

  • @TheFasionista99 Keep practicing my friend ! SL

  • "deedeedee...nanana..."

  • @neonxblondie LOL

  • the work that you produced out of 45 seconds would take me a whole 10minutes

  • Question: There are two different types of clays i'm aware of. white and brown, white is more smooth and brown is more rough almost like sandpaper. Which cost more and is there a better kind for a specific type of pottery?

  • I can't wait to learn how to throw in my ceramics 2 class at school!!! It looks like magic!!! i love it!

  • Hi. I'm really interested in starting pottery. Could you tell me what I should expect in the way of a pottery wheel. i.e Price and a good brand? Thanks :)

  • At the end when you were swinging the vase, I was like "NO! DUN DO THAT!!" in horror.

    xD

  • Hi simon. When i was at college doing A level, i had a passion for narrow necked bottles such as this. It's nice to see you doing the same as i and i feel very proud of myself,,, after collaring the neck, the collared gets pushed out again as you lift the form lol.

  • Strangely mesmerizing to watch clay on a wheel. The same feel as when you carve wood on one of those spinners... I really kind of like it.

  • LOL are you useing ur foot to spin it?

  • hey can you make a perfect sphere but empty in the inside????

  • @pichulick the air inside will make the clay crack while it is being fired / dried out you would need a hole somewhere for air to escape

  • fantastic!

  • Your videos are amazing. I watched some of your videos and attempted my first pot today. It ended up becoming a mug, and I pulled the handle, like you did, it was a lot of fun. Hoping to throw another on tomarrow or mybe a vase.

  • @AlexanderPheonix Well done , keep practicing !! SL

  • I love you Simon! :) You have taught me so much about how to go the extra mile and how to push myself beyond what i am comfortable doing. Thank you thank you thank you!

    :) The Muddy Diva

  • dammit! I havent thrown a pot in 2 years and i really want to now!

  • That's Amazing! I still have problems with an even lip :P lol.

  • MR leach! i need your help!

As of late i've been throwing a lot taller pots but have trouble after they get past 12-13 inches high. Here are my problems

    1) after they get that high and i try to pull up the clay, no clay comes up! the bottom just stays as thick no matter how many times i try and pull up!

    2) my base gets thinner and thinner with every pull but stays the same thickness.

I need help any ideas on how to fix this problem??

  • a) ive always wandered how to do this, thanks for sharing

    b) how muslcey is your leg that powers the wheel? it must be beastly :P

  • dude the top is totally uneven, you have to learn how to trim

  • unh I wanna throw. right now!

  • pottery wheel demostrations make good videos

  • I made my first (ever!) of two bottle vases today after watching this video. Thanks for the instruction and inspiration.

  • I <3 Simon Leach!!

  • Nice, thanks for the videos.

  • Cool, how long did it take to learn all that knowledge?

  • lovely.

  • holy crap you have giant hands!!!

  • I haven't started pottery yet, but I really want to... So, I have been watching your videos, and now I REALLY, REALLY want to... I don't think I can afford to buy a pottery wheel, but I will BUILD one!!! Great video!!! ;) XD :) :D

  • your the man. I'm awful at ceramics

  • I tried this today and I got the neck part though not quite as narrow as yours but my clay was too thin or too wet or something so the part under the neck flattened out instead of remaining round. Thanks for teaching this technique.

  • You make the "collaring in" part look so easy...LOL...Having watched this twice more, I now realize my mistakes. I should have started narrowing the top sooner and left more height at the top to collar in instead of making it rounded too soon...*sigh*...and I'll have to wait another week before my next pottery class.

  • I tried this out today and I ruined three balls of clay because I forgot to throw an inward sloping cylinder first, and made the body rounded too soon again ...so I ended up with a nice goldfish bowl which wouldn't rise up and narrow into a neck...LOL...I wish I could have this video right beside my wheel at class.

  • I've recommended this video to all my friends at the pottery class and I think quite a few of them are going to try it, too.

  • Hi, I'm a beginner potter and I was so inspired by your video that I tried this project at my class today and discovered that it's definitely not as easy as you make it look LOL I am watching this for the 12th time already so that I can try it again tomorrow.

  • Good video :D

  • Im in ceramics at college and this stuff is HARD

  • Great lesson! I've been potting off and on over 5 years but lately I'm in a rut and having trouble centering. Not outside the pot, but centering the hole. Any tips?

  • Simon- What kind of claybody is that you're using? Looks to be pulling like a porcelain... and looks to be pretty plastic as well! The darker color makes it look to be a stoneware though. Whatever it is I'd like to try it! If you make your own clay and have a recipe you'd be willing to share, I'd love to try and throw some. Great videos!

    Abraços André

  • fANTASTIC!

  • loved the way you comment (teach!) as you do this. lots of the other pottery videos have music but no talking or instructions. I found your video very helpful thanks simon.

    Kate from South Africa

  • I can't make this for the life of me. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

  • very nice! Sence I wa a little girl ,I want to try this, but realy never did.

  • Niiiice...thanx for sharing Simon

  • hi i was wondering if u suggest buying a potters wheel over making one.

  • Hi - as a beginner I would suggest buying a ready made second hand wheel to start with & probably an electric one ..as you gain more experience get a kick wheel ! if you are a bit DIY inclined then make one ! that will give you a lot of satisfaction as you throw your pots. ! SL

  • kk i think ill try to make one because it costs alot less thanks

  • As a beginner, to make a wheel thinking its gonna be cheaper is not a way to go, IMO. First of all to do one is tricky, then there are new ones not so expensive, starting about 250, so a second hand may be a good option if 250 doesnot seems cheap (hard to do a workable one for less than that). The point is to decide between a kick wheel or an electric one.

  • Hi, Simon. I just watched this again to get some hints for throwing closed vase shapes. I note two things: firstly, you have had 61,000 hits on this clip! Secondly, the slight "knocking" of your wheel is actually helpful, as it indicates the subtle changes in speed of your wheel as you throw different parts of your pots.

    Cheers.

  • how tall was the final piece ?

  • Hi - it was about 5 inches high ! SL

  • I've gotta say. This is my favorite video of yours.

  • I am in complete AWE... I had the hardest time throwing anything on the wheel.

  • absolutely lovely, thank you!

  • Simon: Could you include the weight of clay you use for each project. It's not always obvious how much clay you are using. Thank you.

  • looks like 1-2 lbs ... you don't really need to be exact unless you want to replicate something exactly

  • i tryed doin this in a school lol i wouldnt even be able to do the start without it goin wrong

  • cool.

  • absolutely brilliant! pottery, an incredibly interesting yet incredibly messy hobby and profession. gotta love it. :)

  • you make it look so easy!

  • Amazingly beautiful. I envy your talent.

    Wildrose xxx

  • Fantastic. You make a great teacher. You sound like a really nice guy.

  • SIMON, I just had to drop you a line after my last comment regarding me throwing a Bud vase out of chewing gum... Well, they say that things happen in threes and for me it was throwing..First of all the Bud vase, which incidentaly is quite romanesque...second I threw a party at my house and last of all I found my wife in bed with my brother so I threw her out.. PHEW SIMON what a crazy week and its all thanks to you SIMON......

  • how goods that

  • He has cool fingers, a soothing voice and the pot is nice. O.o calming.

  • i wana try but CBA very nice rose vase i remember my first time in secondry school. mine was a cornflakes bowl

  • hypnotic

  • Interesting video. thx

  • wats up with you?

  • ..........

  • I did try that SIMON.... But I don't have a potters wheel or clay so I had to improvise. I got all the stuff together and would you believe it PRIMEVEL was on telly so anyway after I watched PRIMEVEL which incidently was poor, I started on my Bud Vase. I had been to the Shops and bought 65 packets of wriggles juicy fruit Gum. I had an old record player and set about making my bud Vase.

SIMON, I have got to say it is brilliant.

  • Hmm that didn't look so well when I tried ^^ Pretty nice video :)

  • nice

  • wow that was memorizing. i feel as if i'm in a trance now. i wana try

  • im doing this at school :O in art class ;o

  • is it difficult??

  • nice ive never done this but i would like to

  • it's like watching paint dry

  • He's my brother !

  • He aint heavy is he ?

  • =]nice

  • simon, you are my hero!

  • That is so beyond cool, I'm speechless.

  • great!!! respect!!! thanks!!!

  • Wow! You are such a pro! I wish I was as good as you!

  • i was half expecting demi moore and patrick swayze to appear! great talkent BTW!

  • Wow is he on a kick wheel, thats a pain to deal with, since you are kicking your leg and trying steady clay

  • Thanks for that video, came accross it by chance, i really enjoyed it, makes me want to try that out!

  • Lol Cool Video but at first it looked like you were making a butt plug!

  • you see what your mind chooses to see ;)

  • This is turkish! Turkish custom

  • how .. you've talent :D

  • i like raisins but not sultanas. Definitely not.

  • he doesnt even get much clay at beggining

  • pretty cool stuff, mate!

  • absolutely

  • Makes me want to try pottery :)

  • That was so awesome/ hypnotic

  • is that arab skills ? O_o

  • Why do you cut out the bottom with a wire?

    Just wondering.

  • they use wire to separate the clay from the wheel without reshaping it

  • most effective way to get the clay off without completely ruining it

  • I like the shape of the bud vase but I don't like the lip
