she can sing. i might be wrong, but this was during the period of her intense touring (i've seen her live many times)and she began to lose her voice a bit. also her range.

i'd love to see others sing, play a piano, push pedals, dance, and loop sounds all at the same time!

That would make sense. Wonder why our buddy oceaninflames thinks a year out is a good time to dredge up an old thread. The performance she gives are always entertaining. Never denied that. Just that they aren't always 100%, or sometimes even close. Maybe I've always caught her late in a sequence of shows? I do respect her talent, her voice, and her dedication. She is hardly the first act to not be as good live as they are in studio. Doesn't make her horrible. Just human.

This song is a studio production. Fewer and fewer artists that travel are as proficient as those from 25-30 years ago. You went to an REO or Journey concert, they were fabulous. Peter Frampton is another in this genre that doesn't work well live, so he recorded live and found that way to make it better (it then sounded the same live). Chicago, BST, EWF....all of them sound great live, but they miss notes. One of the few exceptions: Prince. Man is a machine.

Because the vocoder she's using doesn't mean anything... Also, have you looked at other things where she doesn't use it? She's an amazing vocalist. And before you start bashing everyone, I'd like to see you get up there and perform. No one is absolutely perfect.

So, get off your high horse, and open your mind. Her performances, all of them that I've seen live, are marginal. So, yeah, I've been there, done that, and got the wounds to prove it. You?

while i will agree that this performace is boring and that many of her songs are weird/over the top/too dramatic for my taste... for anyone that thinks she cant sing listen to something like her amazing live version of "Come Here Boy" where its just her and a piano. She can sing.

I always have and always will prefer the studio-recording of this song. It really loses something when it's performed live, understandable of course, but still unfortunate.

i've watched every live performance of hide and seek and she hasn't once hit that high note on key, she misses alot of notes, but i am a huge fan and will over look that, im thinking perhaps she hasn't had lessons?

If you'd read wikipedia's entry on her, she's pretty much self taught on most fronts. and fyi, ALL artists miss LOADS of notes live...in fact, she's not doing to bad. :)
