I don't know what he used, but he probably used some program like Stop Motion Pro, which costs about 100 bucks. If you're just starting out, I would reccommend something like "Anasazi Stop Motion Animator" or "Animator DV Simple"which are free. There are many, many free video editors online, like "Videomach" (the older versions), or Windows Movie Maker, or Virtual Dub.
i use windows movie maker, but you have to make it in 7 frames per second, and if you want better animation, you have to save it into one clip that you speed up 2 double.
@bang467 i reccomend monkeyjam. If that doesnt work AT ALL (I really recommend monkeyjam) maybe helium frog. I dont reccomend kudlian, Its not famous which means it could only mean that its not very good.

Windows movie maker is terrible for any kind of video editing, and is way worse for stop motion. Highly not reccommended.
