4:01 does anyone else think that he almost missed his mouth? lol "What can you tell about me?" "YOU?!" "I don't think that's-" "I don't know that that's-" "Not at dinner..." "Perhaps another time..." "I insist." "You insist?" "Holmes, remember, we discussed this...!" "The lady insists." Watson: *death glare... *Holmes, if you lose me my wife I'll kill you* * Holmes: *Pulls up chair and leans over, staring.*
Every time I see the beginning of this scene when Holmes has to close his eyes to block all the images out, I feel really bad him... Remember the line in the second one:
I see everything - that is my curse...
Really, it must be sometimes very hard to have over-sharp senses... somehow traumatic. But I think that's something that makes him so awesome, how he deals with everything on his own :DD
HOLMES: However the jewels you are not wearing tell us rather more.
WATSON: Holmes!
HOMES: You were engaged. The ring is gone but the lighter skin where it once sat suggests that you spent some time abroad wearing it proudly, that is until you were informed of it's true and rather modest worth, at which point you broke off the engagement and returned to England for better... prospects...
HOMES: ...A doctor parhaps?
Truly brilliant. Mary got more than she bargained for.
The way Mary catches Holmes off guard with the "I intend to" comment is hilarious... his face is just like SHIT GOT REAL. And then right after he offends both her AND Watson, he just tucks into his food! Priceless.
The embarrassment on Watson's face throughout the whole scene is just brilliant.
You have to admit, Holmes really deserved that wine in the face. The whole "left her poor fiance for a better off doctor" was entirely uncalled for, as there is no possible way he could have known why she was no longer engaged. Holmes broke one of his own maxims: Never assume.
Don't pin it on Holmes. Mary specifically asked him to read her. Which he did. In addition, he might have been trying to save Watson from a bad marriage. Holmes just was doing what she asked him to, he even offered not to. Which was his way out and being polite.
@ACHi11iES You kiss your momma with that mouth...?
And she didn't bring anything upon herself. There was no reason for Holmes to go beyond the expected politeness of a friendly dinner, particularly when his best mate Watson just got engaged, and act so tactlessly. I'd say it was Holmes who got what was coming to him.
It was solely his responsibility to stop himself in time, and him being polite was up to him, not up to her. He was being arrogant and full of himself, thus the result.
And also, are you totally comfortable with how you are seeing that situation?
Look: Mary is being perfectly nice and engaging in conversation with her fiance's best friend. And yet it is her paying the price? How is that fair? And on top of that you think she deserved it!
@JA268 Of course not! It's expected from a man like Holmes; he realizes that he won't be able to work without a partner like Watson - someone who is loyal, reliable, and experienced with firearms and hand-to-hand combat. He's also Holmes' only friend and he tolerates him and his terrible habits better than anybody.
the Lady even insisted that she be deduced by Holmes; she brought it on herself. Holmes and Watson even hesitated to meet her request the first time around; even you should've noticed
I am wondering how Watson can undel him aaaalllllll the year without killing him!!
Watson respect!

@Pineapplius Holmes had no way of knowing what her reason for not being with her previous fiance was, and that accusation was totally uncalled her.

No, she did bring it upon herself, because she "insisted". She had plenty of opportunity to get him to stop.
