becasue if it went in nose forst, (not a geek dont know the proper term for the dirrent sides) by the time it was half way across the stresses would make the thing buckle under its own weight, and not only that becasue theres no much resistance( being a ship with a pointy end!) it would nose dive down iin to the water and become a submarine very quickly! putting it side way creates much more surface area for the boat to slow down.and not be sunk!
