Brian was actually not bad looking then! How weird that they are standing there together listening to the old lady read the results! Didn't they know after they skated where they placed?
@tinymavy not necessarily. Scoring back then was very complicated, it wasn't just the overall score, but what they called 'factored placements', meaning how many judges gave you a #1 placement or a #2 placement and so on. Both Brians knew they skated their best during that scene with the woman, but it wasn't until she read the results they knew for sure who placed where.
Watching Boitano's movements (and I don't know a thing about figure skating) I notice there was less artistry between jumps back in '88 than in, say, 2010, and I'm referring specifically to the likes of Patrick Chan or Evan Lysacek, where almost every second there's something going on with their feet or their arms or hands or anything. The sport's definitely evolved. I loved the Tano Triple Lutz move though; I only saw Yuna Kim do something similar in the 2010 Olympics!
Probably the most intense Olympic skating contest ever. But had Orser been able put down in Calgary the long program he did a month later at world's in Budapest, it would have been even more intense! And Canada probably wouldn't have had to wait 22 years for a home gold.
What a wonderful video! This epic competition happened before I was born, so thanks for posting! Both Brians are so brilliant, like Lysacek and Plushenko! :D
yeah i don't think we'll ever find a better competitve rivalry than this at the Olympics. The competition lived up to all the hype. Both of them skated well and put on a show, And it also shows that it's not always Russia who can be the most dominate figure skating nation. Evan Lysacek proved that tonight.
listening to this makes me think of one thing said in the movie cool runnings: if you arent enough without a gold, you wont be enough with one, and i think both understand this point and realized that this was the greatest skating competition even today because they played their performances and personalities to the best of their ability. thats what it is all about in amateur competition and the olympics
It would be nice for Yu Na Kim to win Olympics 2010 for her coach Brian Orser, it might go some way to easing his pain over 1988. Although Boitano was the clear winner in my opinion.
Great post. Thank you so much. There has never been a better contest in figure skating. The sad part is that in 1992 the presentation mark carried weight over the technical mark. And under those rules Orser would have won. His performance in 1988 was clearly more beautiful to watch.
Thanx for this great video. It is history in figure skating... just amazing... I´ll never forget the Olympics in Calgary & the battle of the Brians for all those years.

Orser's hair! OMG, I guess I didn't notice it when I watched the 1988 Olympics because I must have had some equally ridiculous hairstyle.

You CAN have a tie in figure skating. You just need a crooked judge to mess up the scores, as in Salt Lake 2002.
Both the Brians were awesome at Calgary, best Winter Olympics ever imho.

@nightswimmer99 yes and the 2007 nationals was a tie between Evan and Johnny!

I always wondered why during competitions I'd hear Brian Orser asking about jumps to his coach in the kiss & cry. Now I know why.
