In these tournaments, competitors FIGHT each other, using their respective martial art. MMA is different only in the aspect that they use numerous principles of combat. It doesn't "promote" fighting anymore than TKD, karate, aikido, or any other martial art do.

You are right T.martial arts do have tournments but the purpose of the art and teachings of the instructor arent revolved around them. Unlike in mma where the art is revolved around fighting, and competition(usually for profit).I enjoy fighters such as Machida, Silvia and gsp because their traditonal martial arts background. MMa is nice but i think it more for teens and adults

In martial arts it usually teaches not to fight unless its to protect yourself and others. MMA being a sport is about fighting for money, fame, fun which should be reserved for teens and adults IMO.

@metalkarateka Judo is a sport. Tae Kwon Do is a sport. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a sport. Freestyle wrestling is a sport. Regardless of COMPETITION or not, a part of martial arts classes is sparring. Sparring is meant to resemble fighting using the respective martial art. It's the only way to know if you're grasping the concepts you're learning. All MMA does is take these concepts, and mash them together.

Can Muay Thai, or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu not be considered self-defense arts? And someone learning them would be considered a mixed martial artist? They ARE taking mixed martial arts after all. That's all MMA means - more than one. Competing in it, and training in it are two different things, as you said. =]

I dont think it's the wisest idea getting kids into MMA so young. Why? Unlike other martial arts, MMA has become heavily commercialized - let's face it, most people that watch it want to see a guy get beat up. It's why you hear the crowd "BOO"-ing as soon as the fights get technical (which you'll never hear in Japan btw). Many don't care for the sport. It takes very responsible parents to ensure there's not a trained bully in the making. It would help if the parents practiced MMA themselves.
