Exhaust manifolds are directly linked to the combustion chambers.

Mounting three individual manifolds to the engine would mean that there would be be two manifolds linked to three cylinders each and one manifold only linked to two - hence the thrid pipe may have an effect on sound and looks but not on performance.

Just google pics for "458 Italia exhaust rear" and you'll see!!

My understanding was that each pipe (2 pipe config) was connected to a header on each bank of engine. Is the third pipe like some kind of pressure releif for the other two, or some kind of tunning port? I am surriously curious.

In general a bigger exhaust pipe reduces back pressure and helps the engine breath better making more power. There's a limit to this though and if you make the pipes too big you'll actually lose power. As for the number of pipes you're right, each cylinder bank gets its own pipe. On this car I'm 99% sure the 3rd pipe is fake because it's smaller than the other two and the upcoming 458 Challenge doesn't have it.

The F40 used it's third pipe for the turbo wastegates.

The third 'middle' pipe is used when butterflies close for the outer two pipes. It drastically reduces sound, and helps idling. As soon as the throttle is even partially blipped, the butterflies open and exhaust is routed through the 'true' primaries. Which are only the outer pipes. the car only has 2 headers coupling into 1 primary per bank (so two exhuasts outlets), but the butterflies can route the exhaust into a muffler and out the middle pipe for low rpm.

So its not 'fake', but is only used for idling and very low rpm, low load operation. Just like you mentioned, smaller exhausts help smooth out low rpm and idle. and in a flat crank v8 costing a 1/4 million dollars...owners don't want a UPS truck like idle...

It was in a road & track preview of the car a few months ago iirc. The newest issue actually has a test of it, but only briefly mentions the pipe layout. This isn't nearly as complicated as some on here are making it out to be. Its just ferrari's engineers looking for ways to make their newest mid engine flagship not idle like 'older' performance cars. I actually love the way some sports cars struggle with lumpy idles. But ferrari is not interested in me or my income...

@marchettino If the exhaust is too big or lets too much air flow through you will create a negative pressure and lose HP, also they could have gone with 2 bigger exhausts.

The only time you have to have no restriction on the exhaust is if you have a big turbo which, clearly this car doesn't have. 3 Exhaust tips was in tribute to the F40 as they could have put 4 smaller exhausts with the same restriction or 2 bigger ones.

There is a system that excludes the central pipe at low speeds to keep down the noise level.

When you push hard the throttle pedal,opens a by-pass valvle that unlocks the central pipe,obtaining the maximum noise.

But the 3 pipes I think are mainly to tribute the F40.
