TERRIFIC SOUNDING!!!! Too bad Michael Clarke wasn't on this (or was he?) such a huge void in music today without the byrds. Although I love all the work of Crosby,Hillman and McGuinn what they created together can never be outdone by anyone. The Byrds are one of those bands often imitated but never equaled.
Gene Clark, you sound fantastic on this night. We miss you so much brother, the grass is very green right now here in the California desert. No one came close, gene no one.
Ridiculous calling Clark the heart of the Byrds. McGuinn formed the group, sang most of the early lead vocals, and it's his 2-string guitar that dominates their sound. I think Chris Hillman's remark emanates from his frustration that he didn't get enough early credit for the band's success. He was, and is, jealous of McGuinn.
@hfelton McGuinn says this: As he told Rolling Stone in 1990, "I came out and started blending Beatles stuff with the folk stuff, and the audience hated it. I used to get mad at 'em because I thought it was good.... Later on I ran into [original Byrds vocalist] Gene Clark at the Troubador. He was one of the few people who understood it. He asked if I wanted to write some songs with him. Then [original Byrds guitarist] David Crosby came in and started singing harmony."
@hfelton Dang....for such a fine Christian man, Chris Hillman sure is accused of a lot of jealousy, isn't he? I guess Gram Parsons filled his need to hate after McGuinn...LOL. Some of you people, I swear.....
@hfelton well someone else already gave the story of how the group formed. it was more collective, not just mcguinn. also, why the hell does hllman praising clark mean that he is jealous of mcguinn? what? i'm not even following your logic. besides, hillman wrote much better songs than mcguinn. mcguinn was a great guitarist, sure, but not songwriter. clark was the principle songwriter for the group during his tenure, and it's been documented that both mcguinn and crosby were jealous of him
@hfelton because he was making songwriting royalties and they weren't. then they started trying to exclude his songs from the albums and relegating them to b-sides and instead putting tripe like "wait and see" (written by mcguinn and crosby) in place of better songs penned by clark. plus why the hell would hillman be jealous of mcguinn? hillman has been in many great bands and is a talented multi-instrumentalist. i also laughed at 2 string guitar.
Gene was the real heart of the Byrds, taking nothing away from Jim, Michael, Chris or David. Gene wrote the best of the early songs and was a great player and singer. Its such a shame that petty differences caused such internal friction in one of the 60s greatest American Rock & roll bands. Dig into Genes solo work for a real glimpse of his genius, also read MR TAMBOURINE MAN from John Einarson for the real story of Gene Clark.
Wow this is fantastic, it takes me back to the late 70s. I was so excited to get MCH album in HS. Unfortunately even though they had a top 40 hit, not many in my school were into them. I remember playing the LP over Thanksgiving at my grandma's house in 1979. I still love the music and every Gene, Roger, Chris, and David have done. It is too bad that we will never hear any more new Byrds music though. So great and so moving, why can't they release this, You tube thanks! God Bless!
Here's Chris Hillman's statement, just after Gene died, on his role in the group: "At one time he was the power in the Byrds, not McGuinn, not Crosby - it was Gene who would bust through the stage curtain banging on a tambourine coming on like a young Prince Valiant. A Hero, our Savior. Few in the audience could take their eyes off this presence….He was the songwriter. He had the gift that none of the rest of us had developed yet."
The whole Boarding House show is phenomenal -- best MCH bootleg ever imo. It's still out there on the net so if you like this, get it! There are 7 songs w/ Crosby incl. all the hits & everyone is in top form. Great sound quality too. This version of 'Tambourine Man' is one of the best they ever recorded, bar none. ... Nice set of pix!
@SuperArnold99 come on everyone knows that roger mcguinn was definitely the leader of the byrds and chris hillman and david crosby will probably tell you the same thing.
@christianphi I think @SuperArnold99 means that Gene was the 'spiritual' leader of the group. McGuinn was only leader by default. Gene wrote all the best original songs for the Byrds (with maybe the exception of Gram Parsons' later contributions).
@christianphi In the sense that Gene Clark wrote the best Byrds songs (that weren't Dylan covers) and that Gene was the Zen master. Listen to Gene's solo stuff and you'll realise he wrote a lot of gems. Still full credit to McGuinn, Crosby and Hillman in their own write for being incredibly talented singer/songwriters.
great vocal blend .....

Well, for sure Gene Clark was the only real songwriter in the early Byrds and that you can't deny.

I know, its obvious hfelton is just a 'pedestrian" Byrds fan and has no clue about their history. LOL@2 string guitar!
