It cleans up the sound. It's a lot harder to play really, really clean like he does here with the mids cranked, atleast with distortion or high gain amps. Plus it generally sounds a bit better under heavy distortion.

Technique wise he's good. But his sound doesn't do anything for me. I hear too many guitar players play the same kind of way. Stop and feel a note or two once in a while I say. Add a little bit of emotion to it. The guitar playing just sounds typical and routine. I hear this kind of shit all the time. I said what I had to say. Now give me a thumbs down.

Try not to base a guitarist completely on a 2 minute video, especially one where he is playing along to backing tracks of his heavy metal band. I agree with you to an extent but Jeff Loomis has done things with a bit more "feel" to them, listen to the "jeff loomis solo" video, that allowed him to do his own thing.

Remember, this is a clinic. This is where he's /supposed to/ show off. All you see here are solo's from Nevermore songs. He writes most of the actual songs too. If you listen to Sentient 6 for example, you'll know that he can definitly write with emotion.
