  • Have you had any problems with metal crucibles flaking off impurities into the aluminum possibly weakening/distorting the finished casting. If so are ceramic crucibles something to look into? Thanks for the video and comments.

  • You could've add some music to this video instead of listening to metal melting from the powerful furnace.

  • when you do a lost foam pour do you have to burn the form out of the mold before you pour like as in lost wax? or can you directly pour? also are you using acetylene as your blast fuel?

  • @MrShaun1578 No..the metal will vaporize the foam and take its place

  • Comment removed

  • maybe you should pour acetone in the mold 1/2 hour in advance to dissolve the foam

  • @existentialatheist He is using loose sand ...the thing would colllapse... btw molten aluminium will get rid of the foam faster than acetone

  • lol this shit makes me lose control laughing. fuckin funny as hell seeing him do this with a bath towel on

  • Good video :) But lol the bath towel cracks me up ! Good videos please make more

  • Why dont you just build a tilting furnace. I have on and I can make melt up to 100 pounds of aluminum in 20 minutes.

  • nice skirt lol

  • What kind of crucible you used, it looks awfully thin.

Also don't use the fan when your pour the aluminum, you'll just aggravate it.

    Great video.

  • hey ive used several types of foam and it never turns out good what kind do you use?

  • The more dense the styrofoam the more detail the item can be much like the 'Lost Wax' method. I have used foam from packing peanuts to attic insulation and they all worked well. Check out my info on my other vid Lost Foam Casting Raptor Project i detail more of the process in the info section.

  • oh i see also if you ever get the idea NEVER use floral foam its terrible easy to carve but it builds up a layer of soot and wont allow heat/aluminum through

  • Good advice! I can see that being a good sculpt medium but like you said really sooty and toxic. Thanks!

  • @chrisehorton

yep but i think i might go to lowes today so i can get some foam

  • Where do you get the molds?? do ya make 'em or??

  • I make them from styrofoam with a hot wire cutter.

  • The control rods of Chernobyl.

  • lol

  • Nice E-class sitting on the back..

  • That was easily the most dangerous 'foundry work' I have ever seen. And I don't mean that in a good way. I mean, you're being foolish.

WTF is the bath towel for. You should be dressed in fireproof gear. But most importantly, you need real tongs that keep you FAR away from the crucible. You could easily drop the whole thing on your leg and foot as you walk.

    That's crazy.

  • MOM! How many times do i have to tell you not to embarass me in front of my friends on the internet! Your like some kind of crazy stalker thats why my friends dont want to come over!

  • @chrisehorton LOL!!!!

  • nice

  • Ok so i guess you dont wont to see the vid of me casting or MIG welding in flip flops? ;)

  • @chrisehorton I do all my casting in flip flops if im gonna burn my flesh off im doin it in comfort damnit

  • lol i weld barefoot....

  • @chrisehorton Best reply ever

  • @ahz123 LOL! ive done blacksmithing in bare feet before now, some people listen to too much health n safety advice from officials....live a little, experiment a bit :D

  • @whackitov

    i agree..

  • I dont think that bath towel wrapped around your wais tis going to do much to protect you. I would invest in a heavy leather apron and some fire proof boot covers / gaiters.

  • @AlbequerqeTurkey

It's not the bath towel that's protecting him, it's the Mormon panties he's wearing underneath.

  • Cool Video, but we need some info.

The title was lost foam Casting. Was that Styrofoam? What did the finished product look like? How did you build the blast furnace? Was that material Iron bars or aluminum? What in the world sort of canister could hold that molten metal without melting itself?? It looked great but how is it done?

  • you guys are to smart for me god bless all of you

  • nice work, your lost foam castings are great,in college the lost foam castings needed body filler,so we used patterns of wood it took hours to make.

  • Using a hot wire knife made from guitar wire and a battery charger along with a router control knob from Harbor Freight Tool. You can go from flat prototype to ready cast in one day. I do two coats and two days so no water gets trapped in the slurry. I rushed it a few times and and had to clean up some castings. ugh time better spent watching LOST ;)

  • yeh man. i like it alot. dam nice pour! i got a problem tho. i keep burning through my crucibles. they are made of the bottoms of fire extinguishers. anybody know how to fix it?

  • im a little confused as how to aluminium just 'replaces' the foam? anybody know?

  • the metal is at least 2467.0 °C and it vaporizes(Gasifies)the foam. All the foam gas exits the top.

  • It burns it away with a puff of smoke. The aluminum takes its place and holds the shape so the sand will not collapse in on the mold.

  • The sand is dampened by water or oil so it will hold it's shape even if the foam wasn't there.

  • Aluminum melts around 1,200 degrees. Foam burns at around 300 degrees.

noitce the huge flames when he pours ? the foam is turning into gas and burning away.

As for your steel cruciables burning up, you might have too much oxygen AND too much heat. once it melts, skim the slag and pour.

  • Cool I just found out about this today How long does the process take How much propane do you go through just to melt cans thing of that nature Thanks again

  • I use up a 10 gallon propane tank with 2 days of casting. Melting cans takes up the most propane due to all the air bubbles that insulate the heat from the cold. Crush the cans as flat and as hard as you can. 40 cans make a clean pound i have found.

  • Nice work! After you invest in the leathers you also might want to set this up outside. It wouldn't take much of an accident and then POOF there goes the house/garage!!

  • Yes your right. Not shown in the vid is my hose with gun and 2 buckets of cold water and 2 fire extinguishers. I won't tell how i learned to have all that handy but lets just say it had to do with an old VW block :( YIKES!

PS i have leathers again :)

  • are you sure you should be using water? wont it go boom if you put cold water on molten metal.

  • good luck and stay safe...

  • very interresting!

  • Look how watery it is at ~2:30! That stuff is HOT!

  • Pretty awesome, but I don't think a bath towel is going to afford much protection.

  • Yes leathers are my next investment on better protection. I gave away all my leathers after i stopped ladling molten glass back in Seattle.

  • Your welcome! I love anything others are afraid to do due to the danger involved. My first casts i did in shorts and flip flops. ;) Don't want a "Darwin Award" so i use protection now. I'll post more soon.

  • Thanks for posting this, I'm interested in learning and eventually performing some aluminum casting and seeing you in action is great!

  • very nice!
