  • why do i have a comment in the uploader comments?

  • "they even named their son Homer" They named him after Groening's dad you idiots.

  • Older sister patty? That you DID NOT make cartoon charicter after? LIER!

  • poor kid! his name is homer !! hahahaha

  • would love to go back in time and tell him how successful it will be.

  • Older sister named Patty he hasn't humiliated by naming characters after them lol.

  • @HoppoLOL Noy yet anyway...

  • @KUUSproductions it was just something funny.

  • does he choke his son?

  • I Love The Tan Honda Accord Wonder what he Drives now? Probbly a Mercedes 550 AMG or something.

  • What is he talking about? He named a cartoon character Patti and she was in the first episode of The Simpsons! lol

  • struggling cartoonist? hahha NOT ANYMOREEEE lol

  • Bart=Brat. Groening was called this when he was kid, so there you have it.

  • Simpsons is clean in terms of humor compared to the shows like South Park and Family guy. Now those shows are nasty and down right messed up they show people getting killed in them. Who agrees?

  • @TallandAsian89 coughGrimescoughMaudcough

  • I grew up with The Simpsons and by GOD! I will die with The Simpsons

  • 20 years later, he's a mega multi miliionaire.

  • "Dance on the edge of Dark Humor." This was Dark humor in 1990?

  • Woah, I just noticed at 0:55 that Matt Groening, my idol since I was a wee little kid, drives the same car that I do...cartoonists looooove the gold 1987 Honda Accord lol

  • This guy is my inspiration. The fact that a TV show has lasted this long, let alone a cartoon, is really great. I wish that when I make a cartoon, it has a long lasting impact on pop culture.

  • Eric Stefani at 2:29 !

  • My work place used to be full of workers and managers who looked like Characters from The Simpsons, we used to have a Ned & Maud Flanders, a Mr. Burns, a Patty & Selma, an Agnus, a Homer Simpson, a Barney Gumble (Me), a Lenny & Carl, a Moe, a Mr Smithers, you name it. Today all we have left are Barney Gumble and Principal Skinner.

  • Man...the 90's sucked!

  • @macgeek2004 wrong

  • older sister patty has not had a character named after her

    whoops!

  • @Riverdante I think you mean - d'oh!

  • @Riverdante: I think 1990 there was not Patty ^^

  • @MarkusHomer She was in the first episode (aired in 1989).

  • @MegGriffin45: Really? Cool!

  • If Simpson's, "Dance on the edge of dark humor" then what does Family Guy do?

  • @SuperRetardedWario Shits on it with crappy reference humour.

  • lol matt used to drive a honda accord? or whatever the hell it is

  • It's surprising that this show is 4 years older than me (not including the shorts) and it's still making new episodes to this very day.

  • Simpsons in its golden age

  • The Simpsons > Family Guy.

  • @Seanorman88 oh i get it, its opposite day

  • @Seanorman88: Totally! :)

  • The Krusty drawings were for "Kruty Gets Busted" (when Krusty had a heart attack on the set of the show).

  • How times have changed...

IMO, the new series is god awful.

  • It's weird to think that people once thought this show was sick and edgy.

  • matt was young :D very cool video , matt is very intelligent to create this cartoon that lasts till now

  • wow i havent even seen these very early episodes before!!!!

  • i have an older sister patty who i have not humiliated by making a cartoon character out of. then came patty and selma. xD

  • @EmericanGangstarr It's weird because Patty and Selma were in the first 30-minute episode that was broadcast. Maybe Groening didn't expect them to become regular characters on the show.

  • ...I can't believe THIS was controversial at the time, when it's mellow compared to the shit on TV these days.

  • @SuperTugz family guy is worse

  • ERIC STEFANI!!

  • Comment removed

  • I bet that baby's like 3 years younger than I was because I was born in 1988

  • @HyperSonicXtreme The Year of the dragon, lucky you

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks for posting! Its interesting to see how the media percieved the simpsons back then.

  • @EricKeyes Uh I'm pretty sure she did, they were in the Christmas special and that was 1989, whether or not she was named yet I'm not sure. Though I am almost positive she was.

  • @Josh3455

That's right I remember them standing with the Family while singing Jingle Bells =P

  • Matt is so freakin young!

  • "Patty" didn't get a character named after her?

    Heh

    Guess that didn't go through.

  • lol when she was talking about how they do the animation in korea it reminds me how krusty was talking about how the did the animation for Itchy&Scratchy in korea.

    GO SIMPSONS!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Mark's name is still safe

  • PATTY!! HAHAHA

  • So how early on is this? 1990 obviously, but..March? April?

  • To the poster of this video. Sorry i accidently rated this vid as one star...whoops sorry:/

  • No problem =P

  • @ginjaninja1988 didnt humiliate by naming cartoon charicters after the,? patty and selma?

  • @ginjaninja1988: No stars anymore XD

  • The first clip shown - seen it

  • I remember a time when I was a kid when my family looked forward to seeing The Simpsons every week. Now we don't even think about it unless it's reruns on weekdays.

  • I hate to say this because I am a die hard Simpson fan but the simpsons now are just crap i cant even watch the first 2 minutes because its not funny like the old episodes i guess they are trying to compete with family guy which sucks also

  • new writers

  • Actually no, they were starting to go that way, but they pulled themselves from the brink and made it really work

  • he wears the same jacket in the game XD

  • Bahah so much better animation these days!

  • The young Matt Groening, cool.

  • "Graining."

    Finally.

Someone bothered to pronounce the name.

  • Well, everybody has there favourite period of the show. I know people who refuse to watch episodes from after season three!

  • I wish the simpsons was this good today. They should've stopped after season 10.

  • This Might Be Surprising But It Only Started To Be Really REALLY Bad In Season 16.

  • Yeah, that's when the show hit rock bottom, but after season 10 the show took a bad turn. There were some great episodes that are able to stand up to the classics ("The Trilogy of Error", "The Computer Wore Menace Shoes", and "Bye Bye Nerdie" are a few that come to mind), but tons were just plain aweful. Remember the episode where they go to Africa? Worst episode of all time.

  • Also, the animation has become very dull and lifeless. Just look at the drawing of Krusty at 2:39! They would never be able to pull that off today. The basically, the show has become a "Family Guy-lite".

    There, rant over.

  • The One When They Went To Toronto Was Worse. There's Good Episodes In Season 13 Like Homer Getting His Jaw Wired Shut And When The Simpson's Go To Brazil.

  • Yeah, it was REALLY bad then. But it got bad before than, it was a slight down hill slide, then, bam! mega-shit. No way out.

  • bite your tounge!

  • They held up for a little longer after that, after about 12 or 13, they needed to go, nowadays, the show is virtually unrecognizable. The writing is mean spirited and the characters are bland. Please, Lord, put that beast down.

  • Doubt's that he drives that car anymore....

  • i think matt was like 35 in this video because he is 55 now he is a god!

  • what does he mean he hasn't named a character patty??? Patty is marge's older sister lol

  • patty came in later episodes

  • its cause patty wasnt created until season 2

  • actually, patty is in the first episode, "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire".

  • patty and selma

  • He was probably being ironic.

  • Matt is probably fucking jacked with money now!

  • well he did use patty later on :D

  • man his sons is exactly my age...

  • matt groening is god and the simpsons is fucking awsome

  • I love the Simpsons tv show, the video games, the movie, the board games, and the clothes.

  • It is hard to believe that little baby is old enough to vote now.

  • I am guessing that he moved out of that house.

  • cute baby

  • 18 years ago!! i don't belived it

  • for real..

  • :D i remember those episodes!

  • lucky i wasnt even born

  • He looked in 1990 what I imagine Ben Gibbard will look like when he's 50.

  • I bet he's not living in a little house on a shitty LA street and driving a Honda Accord anymore.

  • Hahaha, "Charlie Brown Penis"

  • "Peanuts"

  • I don't have a love of my life, so who will stab me?

  • I just want to say that they changed their son's name because he was getting too much negative attention by other kids.

  • the pencil test is from the episode in which Bob frames Krusty for Armed robbery (Krusty gets Busted). the moment Krusty has a heart attack.

  • wait did he not know that he DOES have a character named patty?

  • when are they go to put season 11 on dvd i got season 10 so im just asking when on late summer fall

  • I haven't heard anything... sorry.

  • on 10/7/08

  • 20 seasons later, and it's still a hit.

  • Too afraid to name their son Bart huh? hehehehehe...

  • I can see why Groening's a single now...

    he's a superhero!

  • wow i wonder if he he'd ever knew this was gonna be the longest running show ever. no show can ever recreate what the simpsons did.

  • Specifically the longest running prime time show. There are soap operas that have been on for twice as long.

  • thats what i meant. i dont watch soap operas so i wouldn't know that.

  • how long did you worked on the simpsons

  • yeah it says he makes a cameo himself in there? I wonder who it is

  • I still do. I left for a few years to work on other shows but eventually ended up on Futurama and now back on The Simpsons

  • I gotta ask ya---

When I look at these early Simpsons clips, my heart melts because I can't understand why, over the years, the decision was made to cut out all the rubbery, squishy movements. The Tracey Ullman shorts might have been TOO grotesque, but these first season movements strike a good balance, I think. But today, the movement is so limited and stolid that it just seems totally sterile. It seems like such a waste of those wonderfully bulgy, lumpy characters. Do you agree at all?

  • I don't really think it changes the feel of the characters. The yellow outlook of the generic white characters seems pretty memorable.

And 'cute' cartoon characters existed in an age of ignorance. Now things are a little more expressive.

  • Uaxis: Were you replying to me? You seem to be responding to something completely different from what I said

  • no, hes right on

  • About what? His words were very vague and unclear.

  • hes saying that the story it self is the same regardless of what it looks like and it shudnt matter as long as the origanal simpsons theme is there behind what you just see

  • Well, it actually ISN'T, but that's whole other argument....

But the animation now is stilted and dull--almost geometric--and because of that so many opportunities are thrown away. Animation, after all, is an ACTING medium. And good acting can even be possible on a low television budget, in the hands of skilled artists. The writing, on a show like this, comes first, but the animation's job should be to enhance and enrich it, not merely carry it along.

  • When he says "My friends and I were trying to draw Charlie Brown of Peanuts" I swore I heard "My friends and I were trying to draw Charlie Brown a penis."

  • I think thats what he was saying lmao

  • This is so great!

  • classic

  • i dont know why is every 2d animated cartoon is dome in overseas these days not in the usa or canada what i it much money to do the link and the cel painting and filming well now the cell painting and filming is dome in computers these days cause faster i think

  • this is truely some rare footage...he struggled before in the early 90s and now hes a multi millionnare, this goes to show that a little hard work does pay off off later on

  • that was some rough animation on bart was walking with that army helmet look at it its moving

  • Wow...the overall direction had a long way to go, but that particular animation of Krusy's heart attack is probably the most Kricfalusi-esque moment in Simpsons history. Interestingly, I'm pretty sure that's Brad Bird, not David Silverman. And how wonderful the irony of using that as a backdrop for the old widespread inaccuracy that the Korean studios do all the patchwork!

  • The final animation is done in Korea, what's done in the States is Writing, Voices, Directing, Design (Character, Background, Props), Storyboarding, Character Layout (Key Pose Animation), Lip Assignment, Timing and Color.

I hope I didn't forget anybody but you get the idea.

  • After "...Kung Fu movie..." Homer drawings from left to right are David Silverman, Matt Groening and Wes Archer.

Brad Bird directed "Krusty Gets Busted" and those Krusty drawings may be his but you'd have to ask him.

  • I'm just a teenager who's applying to animation school this year. Thanks for the insight!

  • Yeah, that's basically what I've understood from Silverman's comments on the subject in "Simpsons Movie"-related articles and such. I just wonder about those occasional Rod Scribner-esque clutches of slightly impressionistic, almost non-linear in-betweens (as opposed to just any example of elastic exaggeration) that Silverman does sometimes (though mostly in seasons 3-8). Those must be a quite a chore to lay out!

  • why is the animation is done in korea the simpsons shorts were animated with ameraican animators right i know beavis and butthead were animated with american animators

  • The Simpsons shorts were animated in the US but production costs for a 22 min episode would be extremely expensive not to mention the fact that the 22 minutes are much more complex than the Shorts.

Beavis and Butthead, with the exception of the festival shorts, were also animated overseas.

  • Rock that 89 Honda with the flip up lights! AH

Why haven't I watched this before? Nice puffy 90's hair Eric and Eric!

  • P.S- I also think it's funny how Matt did eventually embarass his sister with the the Patty twin!
