@Jet5560 17 is still a kid -- you are not an adult till you are 18. Broderick is just plain dull--why don't you read some of the critics' reviews and you will see what that have to say about Matthew Broderick's lack of portrayal as a fast-talking salesman. The first screen version is nearly verbatim, word for word. The only major difference is that they added Gary, Indianna for Preston to sing as well. And please stop talking to me--I would hate to have to report you as spam.
i totally love this version better. And whoever thinks that mathew broderick has no charisma is plain stupid. Broderick has far more charisma than Preston. This remake totally rocks! And whoever doesnt like it, well too bad. Live with it.
@rubino83 This isn't some high school play. this is a film set in an actual time and place. they need to at least make an attempt to be historically accurate.
@Jet5560 no it is not. The original movie used the original choreography from the Broadway show--same choreographer. The first movie is nearly word for word ffrom the broadway script. Robert Preston had charisma--broderick has none in his portrayal as harold hill.
and let's not forget that we MUST have token black people in this movie because we all know that there were black middle class americans in Iowa in 1912--when the play takes place
@delidude1999 So what you're saying is black people do not belong in such a historically-accurate movie as "The Music Man" unless the director wants "diversity". Hmm... want an extra shovel, faux theater snob?
@rubino83 it's not historically accurate--it was based on meredith wilson's memoirs of growing up in iowa. and yes since disney was backing it it had to be ethnically diverse--God knows that disney has to have black people in every disney show, and watch the original music man--the anniversary and look at the extras and you will learn that the robert preston version was almost identically redone from the broadway version--down to the dances.
@delidude1999 finally someone who knows what he or she is talking about. The original movie is nearly verbatim to the broadway show and the original choreographer from the original Broadway show redid the dances for the film. Jet5560 is just some stupid kid who thinks Matthew Broderick is good.

Ah yes, Robert Preston. A good example of what separates a theater actor from a film actor.

@Jet5560 wouldn't the play be the original? So it's closer to the original to the original?

why was there a need to do a remake--and a bitterly poor one at that--of this classic movie. This is a disgrace.
delidude1999 2 years ago
@delidude1999 So do you hate black people or just like that horrible, untrue-to-the-story trainwreck from back in the day?
rubino83 1 year ago
@rubino83 no I do not hate black people--i just dislike when they are put in a movie so that people can say "we were diverse in making this film"

@delidude1999 Yes, and obviously The Music Man is a completely accurate retelling of Wilson's memoirs.
Again, no it wasn't "almost identical" to the play by a long shot, but that's simple enough.
So again, your point is that black people do not belong in the play, because it ruins the historical accuracy of the show.
