You're talking about the first part of the trio right? If so then I completely agree! I think this is one of sousa's more beautiful marches, up there with king cotton I think.
I think I was born too late. If this were 100 years ago I could go with my friends to Manhattan Beach Brooklyn, NY and hear Sousa's band play this march live. It must have been just amazing to hear it in person!
jejeje ive espend my afternoon looking for this march thats because last night i had a dream... i saw a band playing this march in a parade, i dont know what it means.
It means you will die in a marching band related accident soon, unless you watch this video at least a million times by this time next week (BTW I AM completely joking)
We're playing this in honor band...it's not too hard, except for the fast eighth notes that the clarinets have @ 1:09...I can't move my fingers fast enough so I gotta practice...
@AnimeGirl375 I'm in the exact same position you are. I've played clarinet for like 7 years and (would like to think) that I'm pretty good, but that part is just horrific for clarinets. I can barely do it.
@madpiratetommy I know, right? The first time we played it, we played it very slow. Then when the director showed us how fast it was SUPPOSED to be played, we were all just like "Wtf???" We practiced a lot, but by the final performance we ended up just winging it (playing some of it and just acting like we were playing the rest), haha. :P
thank you so much for posting this. I'm auditioning for the sousa band on clarinet and i really needed to hear a professional band recording to get a feel of the song before i audition.
WOW im playing this in band and i absoloutly love it! jst that i like our playing better then this :p its soo different!

we have to have this song memorized by tomorrow, and can play it and my band teacher hasn't even taught it to us! I'm in grade 6.

Don't those clarinets sound just like waves on the shore? And then you can just hear the band go marching off down the beach...

wynton marsalis uses this piece to contrast the sousa band and the new orleans jazz band in marsalis on music. It is brilliant, as is he.

On this particular march if the clarinets are played in just the right way at the trio, to me at least, there's an illusion of a human voice created.

Thank you for the clear recordings of Sousa.
As a member of a community band playing trumpet for many years, I have played of them.
They are especially appropriate on July 4th.

sousa's marches are really unique;
normally they start out forte then the second strain is piano
