Disconnect the plug to the distributor before cranking it! This is a common mistake people make, and the coil will try to fire without the cap on, and the spark will ground to whatever it finds closest, or easier........which just might be the ICM. My wife took her civic to a shop while I was out of town for a tune up, they screwed up by cranking the motor with the cap off, and fried the ICM, but instead of replacing the ICM they replaced it with a used distributor...... I was very upset!
@somedudeandacomp Yep! Best $20 I ever spent on that car. May sound dumb, but I actually felt a difference with those strut bars. Steering was handling were much better and responsive.
Very helpful. I woke up this morning and my crv would not start. it worked just fine yesterday. tested to find there was no spark. replaced the coil with help from this video, and i am back on the road. On the 2.0 the whole unit is turned 90 degrees to the left. Thanks!!!
have you gotten a better spark? i think my coil is bad because the spark feels weak. like at idle when hot the idle seems to be weak and it kinda seems like the idle goes down lower then 650 which is the oem idle.
hey nick , i got same car, im about to buy that accel coil cause my original went bad. i heard that on hondas its better to stick with oem on the ignition parts. has this coil given you any problems so far?, what do you recomend oem or this accel coil?, also when you bought it did it bring any extra screws cause i stripped my positive one
@eric31291 Mine that I bought didn't come with the screws. You might take one to a hardware store or a Honda dealership and see if they can match it. And no, I've not had any issues with this coil at all. It's really helped me in this cold weather lately, I'll tell you that much. It's been down in the single digits here several times. Easy cold starts and responsive. I've never heard of staying away from aftermarket ignition parts. This one gets a thumbs up.
Does the check engine light comes on when the coil gets messed up? My car's idle is really bad after the car heats up. Somebody told me that maybe my coil is the culprit!
@ambis99 I would think if the coil is bad, the check engine light would come on. You can always go to an Advanced Auto parts or somewhere to get them to read the code for free. The idle could be a few things...I know my idle issues were solved after I cleaned my IACV (Idle Air Control Valve). It's located on the intake manifold. If you need a video on how to check and clean that, I could make one. Just let me know.
Here's what happened. I didn't drive the car for like 2 months, then I started driving it again. It was fine for a few days, but one morning I started it up, started driving, and when I got about a block away I shifted into 4th, sometime around then, the car died, and won't start up anymore. not sure about terminology, when I try to start it it makes the normal revrevrevrev, but doesn't catch or something.
@TheLegalizeIt Hm...check the oil maybe? If it sat for 2 months, check it just in case. It could be your fuel system as well. If it's just not getting fuel, could be a clogged fuel filter or failing fuel pump.
@TheLegalizeIt Not sure how to check if the fuel filter is clogged, but you could replace it and see if it helps. And the fuel pump, its the sound you hear when you turn the key over before it starts. A brief humming sound. Not sure how to test it though. And yes, there will be 2 holes at the end of the dipstick. The oil should be between the 2 holes. If there is no oil at all...that's a problem. That would explain the engine not starting.
@bboyMiStEr187 it turned out to be the distributor. My car had been starting so so for a while. It always would start, but sometimes it would take a while.
my 98 honda civic died while running, now it tries to start, makes noise but wont start. I hear ignition coil is pretty common, as well as rotor. Once I take out the rotor and ignition coil, how do I make sure they work, autozone?
@TheLegalizeIt What kind of noise is it? Before you replace the coil and rotor, I would first check all the spark plugs and check for wear. If they're old, go ahead and replace them. Also check the spark plug wires. Check them for cracking, fraying, and check the ends. If they're the originals, I would replace them anyways but that's just me. And make sure your battery is well charged. Does the engine turn over? If not, it could be your starter.
@slicknick50 its the normal noise, it just doesn't finish starting up. I'll try cranking it to make sure it can turn over and check the spark plugs, wires, and rotor
@TheLegalizeIt You can use a 17mm socket to try to crank over the engine to make sure it isn't locked up. The bolt is behind the left wheel, there is a hole in the splash guard to access it. First before you spend a bit of money, I would check: spark plugs, wires, and make sure it can turn over. You may check the rotor as well to make sure it isn't worn out.
This is a very good video and well laid out and explained. Keep up the good work. Keep those videos coming. How much of a difference did you notice with the new accel ignition coil?
@moose1328 From a cold start, it was like night and day. Before with the stock coil, it would crank a couple times. Now, it starts up almost immediately every time. It also gave it a little pep too. Better acceleration.
Thank you for this video. It helped me out.
