Contrary to many PETA trolls out there, Ligers can have offspring and even breed with Tigers or Lions. And cross breeding of species does exist in the wild. Scientists found a polar bear/ grizzly bear in the wild. Look it up. If you put a tiger and a lion in the same enclosure, they're going to have offsprings.

a) You cannot create a human-chimp hybrid. It's not possible.
b) If you're going to try to make a point, at least cite some credible sources. People have a tendency to believe whatever they read on the internet, particularly when it's "heartfelt".

Sure they are cute.... but the breeding of tigers with lions is extremely cruel as the cubs (if they survive) grow up to have many serious health problems. Lots of efforts are being made to preseve the tiger species but there are enough to keep them going in zoos and the wild for alittle longer, the only thing that's making thier numbers less are humans and we should work more on that, then flying into a rage over a liger in a zoo.

It's from September 2010, there are of course many other article available, that's just a recent one.

@SinisterSkip How much research have you done? There's a recent article (Sept 2010) about a month old liger. I can't link you to it, but google "Month-old liger riddled with genetic defects." That's just one example and probably not enough to convince anyone, but it's a good place to start.

Here in the UK we get tigers from other countries to breed with ours and we share our tigers with other countries. This makes the gene pool safe, it's just a shame there isn't many places that can release them back into the wild. the problem is that they wouldn't have the killing instincts of their wild-born brethren and they would fear man less.
I don't know why you guys are promoting ligers. Liger cubs grow up with many defects. They become depressed because both instincts try to take over their mind. @naierer I was just saying that if it really is a crime against nature, the animal would have been still born, like many half-breeds. One can't forget that two animals of the same species mating an producing a new speices is the backbone of evolution but sadly ligers are a dead end. Like zebra/horse or donkey/horses = mules, but people still breed them and I don't see people flying into a rage over it. :/

@Esty2326 Are you not aware that tigers are almost extinct? There aren't enough of them. And the mothers usually died because they don't survive the birthing process. Yes, we should embrace a new bundle of joy but this wouldn't exist in nature. And ligers cant breed to make more ligers. It's pointless to breed them

@mickaydee I do admit, it's not worth it to breed the species and I think only idiot/poor zoos that are trying to promote more exotic creatures are doing it. Lots of efforts are being made to preseve the tiger species but there are enough to keep them going in zoos and the wild for alittle longer, the only thing that's making thier numbers less are humans and we should work more on that, then flying into a rage over a liger in a zoo.

If anybody wants some information to actually learn about the true life of most ligers, a good place to start is to search for the article "Month-old liger riddled with genetic defects," I can't link it...but that's the title. It's from September 2010, there are of course many other article available, that's just a recent one.

I'm not for breeding ligers AT ALL, but I haven't found any convincing proof about the defects yet. Lot of the defects-shouting relies on "it's a hybrid SO IT MUST have defects". Yeah, not convinced. Give us some real proof please.

@SinisterSkip How much research have you done? There's a recent article (Sept 2010) about a month old liger. I can't link you to it, but google "Month-old liger riddled with genetic defects." That's just one example and probably not enough to convince anyone, but it's a good place to start.

@Fenhawk11 Your wrong... In America alone there is 10,000 tigers in captivity and these alone are enough to stop any inbreeding, the gene pool is safe. Here in the UK we get tigers from other countries to breed with ours and we share our tigers with other countries. This makes the gene pool safe, it's just a shame there isn't many places that can release them back into the wild. the problem is that they wouldn't have the killing instincts of their wild-born brethren and they would fear man less.

I don't know why you guys are promoting ligers. Liger cubs grow up with many defects. They become depressed because both instincts try to take over their mind. And their mothers usually die from giving birth to them because they larger then average cubs. They're not even considered a big cat because the males cannot reproduce. Breeding them should be illegal because they're only breed for fame. There's no hope to start a new species.
