I do not think it really occurred to anyone back then that games were fixed and refs were beign bought off. Since 1993 things have come out about past games that seemed odd at the time: Anderlecht v. Forest 1984 UEFA cup, Italian league and Marseilles match fixing....betting fixes in other sports like international cricket. I think people were naieve back then....but I think some of these games like this were fixed.
It is amuisng...because of the 1990 WCUP, Sir Bobby was heralded as a genuis. But people forget that the same media wanted to crucify Bobby Robson in 1988 and 1989 when they were crap. Then Gazza got his debut in March 1989 and good things started to happen. Taylor did not have Gazza as he was injured. England were very average in this period....although Taylor did not help himself by not picking Waddle who was playing great stuff for Marseilles at the time.
You can't help but feel sorry for Taylor. Granted, he ultimately did a poor job but looking back on the Holland game England should have had the Dutch and came away desperately unlucky on the night not just from the ludicrous Koeman decision but hitting the post a couple of times.......
@bluetonic78 England were on the end of some poor decisions that night. Koeman should have walked for the foul on Platt and then the ref did not order the free kick to be retaken when the player blocking the ball was not ten yards. This was made worse when he did reorder a Dutch free kick to be retaken for the same offence and they scored off the second one!!
@tomd2103 Exactly. I remember watching it on TV but what I had forgotten in the midst of time was how well England played that night and how much they dominated (or at least the highlights indicate that). The Koeman decision was a disgrace as highlighted so much in the fact that he scored the goal later on when A) He shouldn't have been on the pitch and B) it shouldn't have been re-taken as you say.
you know this Holland match aggravated my dad so much that he came home from the pub and through his anger, smashed all the plant pots at home and spent the night in hospital! lol
again, thanks to the uploader for the upload. Very hard to find this video. Kudos to you mate, I assume that you are either Dutch or Norweigen, or work for the tabloids!!! Of course your Wolves tag gives it away. I guess Taylor should've selected Stevie Bull eh??? lol
I originally bough this video, because I was (and still am) a Wolves fans. When Taylor took charge of Wolves in 1994, I remembered having watched this show on telly, the year before, and since I basically bought anything Wolves related back then, purchased it. It then dusted away at my basement for years, until youtube came along, and I decided to share it with all you guys.
As for Taylor, I actually didnt like him, when he was England manager, partly because as you say, he refused to call up Steve Bull.
However, despite failing to win promotion with Wolves, he absolutely won me over. Not least because he took great responsibillity in fan relations, including responding personally to letters I send, even commenting on players I suggested! He was known for doing that, and didnt even cancel an appointment to visit a local school, held on the day he was sacked!
@CadenWolves Its funny that as a Dane that you took such a great interest in it, given that you were the European champions at the time! I think that your total football inspired 1986 side was better than the 92 team but hey, it was 92 when they won it!
Well yeah, but has been a fan of English football all my life, and a fan of Wolves for 20+ years.
As for Denmark, I totally agree with you. We had a whole generation of talented footballers retiring after 1988, and the whole team had to be rebuild, and as you say, the 1992 wasnt as talented as the 1986 team, but still managed to win it. It had a lot to do with team spirit when they won in 1992. I'm good friends with Elstrup who scored the winner against France, as I am currently
writiting his biography, I get to hear a lot of stories about 1992.
What he tells is basically that there where absolutely no expectations as the team arrived in Sweden. Everybody just wanted to have a good time, and do the best they could. It meant no nerves, and that the team could play freely. I guess thats a key to any teams success, that if you can create an atmosphere of freedom, most teams will blossom.
@CadenWolves i've always taken a passing interest in DAnish sides. Along with Holland, they play good technical football unlike most northern European teams. Especially when you had Michael and Brian Laudrup, Schmichael, the 2 Olsen's etc. Denmark are ok now but not as good as the old days. I used to go to Highbury with my brother when John Jensen was there and he didnt score for ages!!! Everyone used to shout 'shhot!' at him yet he scored the winner against Germany! lol
Substandard dire refeering. Always the same. Still hasn't changed (Lampard goal v Germany last World Cup). FIFA are cowards. Thanks for uploading this CadenWolves.
Great upload thanks mate, Taylor seems like such a nice guy it's a shame we never got to the World Cup because we had a great crop of young players coming through at that time

Sorry, but Taylor is behaving like an asshole most of the time and would have spent most of the time on the ranks these days. Disagreeing and being frustrated is one thing but barking at the referee and linesmen like he does all the time is bloody unprofessional.
Interesting to me that although Koeman should have gone, wasn`t the next incident at the other end in a similar position and would have been a certain goalscoring chance..
yeah koeman had to be sent off but hey, so had de jong in the final and the england goal who didnt count against germany in 2010wc. but you may not complain to much because England won the WC in 66 with a goal that wasnt over the line.
England wasn't robbed. It was a fantastic game that had pretty much all you could hope for. Koeman should have been sent off but it wasnt a penalty and after Holland had a perfect goal disallowed in the first half. Both sides had some luck but in the end England hit the post twice and Holland scored twice.
@jacqvin Of course they were robbed, the issue is that Koeman went on to score the goal that prevented their qualification. The chances, goals and quality of the match are irrelevant, that goal would have never happened if Koeman had been dismissed. I very much doubt a 10 man Holland would have been the same proposition, especially with one of their key men off the field.
@canran You miss my point. If Koeman had been sent of and Holland lost the game you could argue that Holland was robbed because they had a valid goal disallowed in the first half. Both sides had very important decisions (wrongfully) taken against them. They cancel eachother out so you cant say one team got robbed just because they lost in the end.
Im irish i love to see the modern england team lose because there always so hyped up but if i was old enough to have watched these games id of supported england taylor seems like a nice man and players have personallity. Koeman should have been sent off end of story i think even the most diehard dutch fans would admit that
Everyone was against Taylor at the time...but a tear comes to my eye for his spirit. Taylor would have pretty much done this for free. Capello just doesn't cut it.
To be fair I always thought Graham Taylor was hard done by. He took Watford, an unfashionable fourth division side to the heights of finishing second in the First Division (Premiership to those less educated about 1980s football in England), and did a decent job in turning around the fortunes of Aston Villa.
But, if you are given the right hand men of Phil Neal et al you have no chance. Time for England to dispose of Brooking, Pearce and Clemence because the same thing is happening now!
Thinking about it, not sending Koeman off was probably a worse decision than the recent 'goal' against Germany. And having watched that game, this England team actually looks quite good!
Seaman, eh? He had a great career, but........he did have a habit of choking in the big games. There's this one, the fa cup semi against spurs, nayim's goal in the cwc, Brazil 2002, owen's winner for liverpool in the 2001 fa cup final
@benmarks1984 I agree....Seaman was a great keeper, one of the best England have ever had. But.......unfortunately he did make a few big time costly blunders too.
remember hating this ref more than ANYONE else in the world at the time.....2 free kicks of similar distance...Englands charged down by a defender 3,4 yds away...............same thing happens at our end.....yellow card and a lets do it again......pundits talk about consistency from refs.....this was unforgiveable......1st time ive saw this for years......and it still annoys the crap out of me now!!!!
You have to feel sorry for Taylor. Koeman should of gone, its a blatant sending off and then to add insult to injury Koeman not only scorers a free kick up the other end, buts it a re taken free kick (after Englands free kick should of been re taken).
In the words of Taylor - "what is happening here?"
Absolute disgrace! Koeman should've been off AND it should've been a penalty. AND they charged the wall down. Even after all these years it still pisses me off. I agree though, one of the greatest moments in sport ever captured on film - or should that be video? Die scheidsrechter was een hondelul! Onverdiend, Holland!
People dont realise that in this instance it doesnt matter if the foul was inside or outside the box, according to the rules, Platt was in a goalscoring position with only the keeper in front when foul was committed. That is a sending off offence for Koeman. Why he was still on the pitch only the ref can tell us.
England didn't deserve to lose that game but didnt really deserve to go to the world cup either. Total dog shit performance away to Norway, blew a 2 goal lead v Holland. Taylor was a decent honest bloke but well out of his depth in International football, McClaren the same.
Looking back, it's easy to feel sympathy for Taylor. But it was clear at the time that he was out of his depth, unable to commit to any sort of tactics or formation. That was a clear red card for Koeman but not a penalty - the pull was outside. Also Holland had a perfectly good goal disallowed for a non-existent offside. Looking at England's results and performances, especially in the away games at Poland and Norway, they didn't deserve to qualify for the World Cup.
funny u should mention Fred West i know a Fred West joke Fred is pulled in to the local Cop Shop and interrogated How many people did u kill Fred" Four FOUR! WE HAVE FUCKIN DUG A DOZEN PEOPLE UP Fred says "I'm a Builder That's just an ESTIMATE"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll get me coat.........................
Why on earth was Koeman not sent off for pulling down Platt ? I'm sick of all these terrible refereeing decions deciding games. That Henry double handball still amazes me. The French players were also offside. Fifa have no idea what the Irish fans would have brought to the world cup. Sepp Blatter is a Cu*t.
The Koeman brothers, Ronald and Edwin, should have been sent off both.
Im not an England fan at all, but i really feel sorry for Graham Taylor, cause i saw that documentary when i was 14 years old in 1994 on a danish channel.
I meant the free kick. Yes Holland should have gotton a penalty also, but if England had had the penalty in the first case it would have changed the sequence of events completely.
Everyone here seems to have missed the disallowed goal Rijkaard scored which should have stood !! was clearly not offside by 2 yards - moaning about a red card??? I rather get a goal against me team disallowed than a red card
Taylor to Linesman........"I was just letting him know the referees got me the sack....Thank him ever so much for that"
The funniest thing ever!!! My sides are hurting from laughing. I swear this documentary must be the basis for "Mike Bassett England Manager" !!!!! LOL LOL
Koeman should have been sent off, and Koeman knew it from the sly smiles he kept giving everyone...however, Graham Taylor consistently picked poor players for England and trusted in long ball tactics that could never succeed against good oppositions.
The difference between Holland getting to the QF in USA 94 and going out in qualifying, as we did, is basically the choice of a referee to pull a yellow card out of his pocket instead of a red one.
Who were these magical players he was leaving out then? Whenever Gascoigne, Merson, Ince, Platt, Shearer, Sheringham, Wright etc were fit, they started. We hit the post twice against Holland, got the most horrific refereeing decisions I've ever seen given against us - on another night, we'd have beaten them and gone to the World Cup.
bloody ref, i think the foul Koeman committed was just outside the box (just!) but Koeman should have had a red card, then one of there players charges down our free kick and then Incey gets a yellow for charging down theirs, what a twat!
I feel sorry for Taylor, a gentleman in an awful job. The press caused a furore after every draw or defeat, though it was clear the players bought in to cover long term injuries to key players were not up to the job. Not often said but Taylor took the shit end of the stick and Venables had it easy thanks to the foundations laid down by Taylor during 1990 to 1993
The ref was Karl-Josef Assenmacher and while he was never investigated, he was retiring soon afterwards. This was before the 45-year old age limit for refs, meaning that Assenmacher was actually 46 when refereeing this match, and like its there for all to see, his sight was allready a bit blurry.
He did however pick up a senior table tennis career afterwards winning a big tournement...
i totally agree. remember seeing this as a kid and not appreciating it that much as i wasn't an england supporter then, but now it's a different story. ref was a fucking disgrace!!!
Everybody in Scotland loves this video. It's great man. Anyone ever wondered why every nation hates the English? It's because you're so fuckin full of yerselves.
To be honest, i forgot how pants the ref was, total hommer or what??Koeman should have walked end of, we were a poor side, but would have scrapped a draw, and that wouldve been enough. Still another case of, cudda, shudda, wudda!!!!
my graham taylor had real tough luck - koeman decision, walker's brain fade, seaman flaps, shearer and gazza's injury problems and carlton palmer managing to pull a fast one on everyone that he was england quality
Can anyone let me know if this which was shown on ITV4 on Tuesday was the original version or not (I didn't see that at the time as I was so young). Cheers! Only got to know Graham Taylor as a summariser and I think he's good.
seamans positioning was awful for the free kick to be fair. but koeman should of been off in the first place, last man, hacked him down. germans for ya
a welshman me , but that ref fucked taylor in the arse . kooman had to go off , no penalty , poxy yellow card , then the blonde cunt scores the free kick . outrageous . anyhow mclaren is the biggest cunt you lot have had as an england manager .

yet another mistake by a ref in an england match it stinks like graham said what r they being instructed
Sowbert 1 year ago
People dont realise that in this instance it doesnt matter if the foul was inside or outside the box, according to the rules, Platt was in a goalscoring position with only the keeper in front when foul was committed. That is a sending off offence for Koeman. Why he was still on the pitch only the ref can tell us.
Mikez4 1 year ago
England didn't deserve to lose that game but didnt really deserve to go to the world cup either. Total dog shit performance away to Norway, blew a 2 goal lead v Holland. Taylor was a decent honest bloke but well out of his depth in International football, McClaren the same.
rdw1970 1 year ago
it should have been a red card!!
goldyn12345 1 year ago
Looking back, it's easy to feel sympathy for Taylor. But it was clear at the time that he was out of his depth, unable to commit to any sort of tactics or formation. That was a clear red card for Koeman but not a penalty - the pull was outside. Also Holland had a perfectly good goal disallowed for a non-existent offside. Looking at England's results and performances, especially in the away games at Poland and Norway, they didn't deserve to qualify for the World Cup.

England were so unlucky, Koeman should have been sent off. Plus they had the better chances in the game.
colbro06 2 years ago
That was seriously a disgrace.
The Koeman brothers, Ronald and Edwin, should have been sent off both.
Im not an England fan at all, but i really feel sorry for Graham Taylor, cause i saw that documentary when i was 14 years old in 1994 on a danish channel.
Great days and great memories, thanks.

England should have been awarded the penalty and the dutch defender should have been sent off.

but in the second case holland should have gotten one

I meant the free kick. Yes Holland should have gotton a penalty also, but if England had had the penalty in the first case it would have changed the sequence of events completely.

yeah who cares it was long ago any ways, holland will beat them in the wc 2010 dont worry =D

LOL LOL
spireman50 2 years ago 2
Watching that just makes me angry.
As said by "salmonboyuk" was that referee ever investigated? The non red card and re-taking / non-retaking of the two free kicks is beyond reason.
If I was Dutch I'd be embarrassed.
Absolutely disgraceful.
leadsom 2 years ago 5
Koeman should have been sent off, and Koeman knew it from the sly smiles he kept giving everyone...however, Graham Taylor consistently picked poor players for England and trusted in long ball tactics that could never succeed against good oppositions.
Rhubba 2 years ago
The difference between Holland getting to the QF in USA 94 and going out in qualifying, as we did, is basically the choice of a referee to pull a yellow card out of his pocket instead of a red one.
vbb123 2 years ago
Who were these magical players he was leaving out then? Whenever Gascoigne, Merson, Ince, Platt, Shearer, Sheringham, Wright etc were fit, they started. We hit the post twice against Holland, got the most horrific refereeing decisions I've ever seen given against us - on another night, we'd have beaten them and gone to the World Cup.
vbb123 2 years ago 2
bloody ref, i think the foul Koeman committed was just outside the box (just!) but Koeman should have had a red card, then one of there players charges down our free kick and then Incey gets a yellow for charging down theirs, what a twat!
Unwin85 2 years ago
jesus christ the free kick - the guy is about 3 yards away
cardigan3000 2 years ago
the dutch scored a perfectly good goal in the first half but that goal was disallowed
but that shouldn't have happend.
hamstertrans 2 years ago
That referee was appalling. Having seen the decisions in more depth..denied a penalty, Koeman should have been sent off, retake of the free kick!
mrpop4 2 years ago
Don't think it was a pen. It looked to me like the foul was just outside the box. Koeman definitely should have walked though.

I feel sorry for Taylor, a gentleman in an awful job. The press caused a furore after every draw or defeat, though it was clear the players bought in to cover long term injuries to key players were not up to the job. Not often said but Taylor took the shit end of the stick and Venables had it easy thanks to the foundations laid down by Taylor during 1990 to 1993
dfidli 2 years ago 2
The ref was Karl-Josef Assenmacher and while he was never investigated, he was retiring soon afterwards. This was before the 45-year old age limit for refs, meaning that Assenmacher was actually 46 when refereeing this match, and like its there for all to see, his sight was allready a bit blurry.
He did however pick up a senior table tennis career afterwards winning a big tournement...

my graham taylor had real tough luck - koeman decision, walker's brain fade, seaman flaps, shearer and gazza's injury problems and carlton palmer managing to pull a fast one on everyone that he was england quality

Markus Merk was the 4th official that night. He ended up as one of the best referees in the world. I guess he learned from a "not to do" example.
