  • Significantly longer battery life 850 shots on D90 compared to D3100 which is 550 shots

  • What About For Video. D90 Or D3100

  • didn't mention the better viewfinder and ergonoics

  • Sorry but the d3100 can use the lens 50mm f1.8, coz the new one have the auto focus inside the lens, so one of the advantages of the d90 dissaperar

  • Both the NIKON D3100 & D7000 can take XDHC Memory Cards of 48 Gigabyte and 64 Gigabyte Memory XDHC.The NIKON D90 can only handle SDHC Memory Cards of 32 Gigabyte Memory Cards. So WHAT is that"Video IDIOT"talking about comparing an Inferior EXPEED D90 to an EXPEED 2, Super Low Noise Cameras of the Classification D3100 & D7000 Combined Series. If you own the NIKON D3100,you are NOT going to see any great difference in the NIKON D7000 which Costs 2x the Money for only the D7000 Body Only.D90inferior!

  • Furthermore, the NIKON D3100 has the "IDENTICAL EXPEED 2 Engine Processor As the NIKON D7000". The Differences between the NIKON D3100 & D7000 are Extremely Small. D3100 has Resolution of 2,350 Lines, D7000 has 2,390 Lines, Only a Tiny 40 Lines difference between D3100 & D7000. Also Colour Accuracy between D3100 & D7000 are 6.1=D3100 & 6.4=D7000, Check "PopPhoto.com" Lab Tests. Noise Control in BOTH D3100 & D7000 are "IDENTICAL due to EXPEED 2 Engine Processors Identical in BOTH D3100 & D7000"!!

  • To ALL NIKON Lovers,The D3100 is NOT less Camera than the D90.The D3100 has FULL NIKON EXPEED 2 Engine Processor Extreme Low Noise even at Iso 3200,ISO 6400 Still Acceptable in Low Light at EXPEED 2 Engine Sensor. The D90 only has the standard EXPEED1 Engine,Highier Noise,Iso 1600 Maximum Acceptability Noise. The LCDs are both 3.0".Visual 230,000 Pixels does NOT show great difference to 921,000 Pixel LCD Monitors.Even you find 230,000 Pixels NOT Enough on D3100,Than Use Mini-HDMI Out to HDTV view!

  • You Almost Forgot.,

You Have 2 Dials In The D90

In The D3100 Only One :)

  • D90 costs twice as much too. With your logic, why not just buy the D3S because of it's FX format sensor?

  • @ElPirataChanel That's not the case any more. Professional camera's with 1 megapixel are dirt cheap-but they were once top of the line. The size of the tool has nothing to do with the application of the tool when it comes to cameras. The high iso's and the sensor capabilities are the main points that make this camera shine. So I think you're stuck in yesteryear, the leap forward is a smaller camera that does just as much if not more than the D90. Many professionals consider these things too.

  • is the tamron 17-50mm non VC's ,AF will work on the d3100?? can anyone help me?

  • GOOd thing you bought tools now go buy some brains and some knowledge

  • Thanks for the review .... I am interested in the 3100's video capacity, but think now the D90 would be a better choice. Comparing price of body + 50mm F1.8, the price difference is only ~$45 locally (Vancouver Canada).

  • 230,000 pixels. That's less than 1MP, and you claim that "sounds like a lot."

  • both good.. its hard to choose man!damn! hehehe

  • D7000 ftw!

  • Would I still be able to use AF-S lens on the D90?

  • @davefootballanstorms Yeah it's staying in their current range, don't think it actually has a replacement as far as i know, despite people saying it has. Gonna get one soon hopefully.

  • Good review, There is a difference with the battery life as well, The D90 will take around 1000 shots where the D3100 can only do 500 on one charged battery

  • Convinced me to go for the D3100. I have no doubt that the D90 is the better camera but I can't justify the D90 price for the pluses given.

  • Is there no way to preview depth of field on the D3100?

  • @lasku23 - Both the 35mm f1.8 and the 50mm f1.8 are great primes. Personally I like my 50mm better, but it's an individual thing. Best to try them out for yourself.

    @pogi09282805724 - Yes, I believe so.

@JogBird - Absolutely right, although the D90 has been discontinued as well as the D5000 and D3000. The D300s will be the next to go once the D400 is out. Personally, I wouldn't even consider a D300s against a D7000 as the D7000 wins in every round.

  • @ArtoftheImage ... A D7000 over a D300s - Ha, ha!!!!

  • Really helped with this one. thank you. I'm getting a D90 because of the lenses.

  • dude does the d90 still limits up to 5 mins of video?

  • What about the 35mm f/1.8 AF-S lens.

  • Very Nice review, I was about to choose the d3100 over the d90 but upon seeing your review it changed my mind, Now my question is which prime lens is perfect for the d90, 35mm f1.8 or 50mm f1.8? Tnx!

  • D7000 is not a D90 replacement. Its between the D90 and D300s according to Nikon.

  • Thanks for your prompt response. Is the depth of field button on the D90 useful when trying to get a shallow depth of field. The D3100 doesn't have it. Can you get a shallow depth of field with the 35mm f1.8 Am in Toronto and will definitely keep you in mind if I need a professional photographer. This is going to be my first DSLR so please excuse the basic questions.

  • Good review pretty much same reasons why I would consider the d90, but I actually ended up with the d3100, I'm an amateur so def good first camera later on might upgrade bodies, any suggestions for lenses? Was looking at the 35mm 1.8 , your thoughts?

  • @BIGE2333 The 35mm f1.8 is a FANTASTIC lens. VERY sharp and a great lens over-all. Fully recommended. You can't beat it for the price. It's sharper than my Nikon 35mm f2.0 AF-D.

  • @BIGE2333 The Man is this Video/Audio is NOT telling YouTube Pro-DSLR NIKON Cosumers the"Turth"! The NIKON D3100 has the Latest NIKON EXPEED 2 Photo/Video MicroProcessor(C.P.U.),The Nikon D90 only has the Standard older EXPEED older Photo/Audio C.P.U.The NIKON D3100 EXPEED 2C.P.U.results in Direct Much Lower"Noise"at ISO 3200 compared to a grainier EXPEED Standard D90 Nikon at ISO 3200! Furthermore,AutoFocus on the NIKON D3100 is Equal(EXPEED 2!)vs.the D90,NIKON D3100=2,350Lines,D90=2,240Lines!!

  • Very good review, just what I was looking for. What about the plus points the D3100 has that the D90 doesn't like continuous autofocus and 40% lighter weight. Are the viewfinders different, does pentaprism make a big difference.

  • @renardfernandes The AF-F continous autofocus in video mode is terrible. Basically, it doesn't work. As for being 40% lighter, yes, that's a plus IF you like a lighter DSLR. Some folks prefer a bit more heft to their camera. The viewfinders are very similar. It's the LCD monitors that are different. Check out my video Why to Choose the D3100 over the D90.

  • @renardfernandes

Hehe That's true, but its smaller because it doesn't have the own autofocus motor...
