They Bar-kays weren't the only ones, there were quite a few funk bands/R&B groups, artists, that were on that new wave funk vibe around the early 80's:
@MrJuly1990ish That's true. Even Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock added some New Wave vibes to their music in the 80's. I liked all of that NW music and artists; they were unique and mixed the synthesizer with funk. NW was short lived but it made a big impact on music.
Another group pop into my head, lol!! Shalamar too was on that new wave sound. They actually went to number one in England with the song "Dead Giveaway."
I RECALL SLICK RICK JAMES SAYING HE COPIED BOOTSY, BY WEARING THE CAPE, ETC. THE BAR-KAYS ALWAYS BORROWED FROM WHOEVER HAD A HIT. THIS STARTED WITH SON OF SHAFT.
I remember this. Very Rick Jamesish,, sounds like a remixed version of "super freak" even the singer is trying to sound like Rick James. Really good funk classic though. Super Freak was a much bigger influential song than I thought.
I remember this song. I wore it out on the album, my mother was so sick of me playing it over and over. Thanks for posting, brings back great memories.

@AgentCarter b4 he realeased all the hits we'refamiliar with, rick was on shit like this: /watch?v=3EV4_oL-KiY im not about to start arguing with someone who probably just went on wikipedia and saw when he released his first major album. barkays been cranking out the jams since the mid 60's with Otis... albeit larry wasnt with them then... but still, come on now, you know who came out first, listen to "Too hot to stop" and tell me rick james was still first. working with larry i learned alot.
@Mr2Quick901 not true at all. bustin out came out in 79, and was totally in this style. im well aware how far bac k the barkays go, but none of their shit from the 60's sounds anything like this. this was clearly inspired by rick james. too hot to stop doesnt have this songs feel at all.
and not trying to belittle the barkays, im a big fan. but rick james had a huge influence on the funk and r&b scene when he came out and this song exemplifies that
@AgentCarter fool you just wanna argue dammit. CALM DOWN. i was using "bustin out" in slang terms. like "crankin out" "churnin out hits" you smell me? im done here. I LOVE FUNK MUSIC. NUFF SAID. goodday. :)
@AgentCarter also, check "shake your rump to the funk. all these were while rick was still with stone city band.

@Mr2Quick901 shake your rump to the funk is pure 70's funk though, and the stone city band was just the name of rick james band during his solo career
@AgentCarter also check out "shake your rump to the funk" at that time, rick was still with Stone City Band. Besides, we all know the commodores, gap band, bar kays, lakeside, and rick james, even earth wind n fire all copied and imitated each other... ADMITTEDLY. Its called MIRROR writing, using same lines played backwards and what have you.. It was all about making the top 10 brother! making that MONEY! Besides, who really cares, just enjoy all of this wonderful music from that era. :)

Funk music ended with the introduction and infusion of HIP HOP and NEW JACK SWING, which made EVERYTHING in urban/R&B music sound the same, while the FUNK period of the 80s urban scene was VERY diverse in sound. I'm a fan of Electro-funk/synth funk, but also EVERY other level of R&B music that was out then...even some of the New Jack Swing stuff. But the continuous leaning and dependence of R&B artists to incorporate elements of rap/hip-hop did the most harm to funk, and STILL does to R&B today!
@95alanj I did not see that. it is a sad state of being that humanity will act out with such depravity. The movie ZEITGEIST discusses the human equation with remarkable clarity. "A culture of poverty" combined with ignorant superstition and paranoia causes us to become blind to overarching solutions. If we can understand that the people have power, but are directed against one another we might become a little better organized.
@95alanj Agreed. It's not that I'm hatin' on their abilities, they had NO SHORTAGE of talent and there's no doubt that they could hang with and were among the best.
@95alanj probably not a good idea to classify racial types. The time comes to denmand that every human being i=on earth become an autonomous component of government. The ruling banksters and their political machines must decentralize.
@95alanj Well, I notice that you didn't DENY that there were similarities between "Sparkle" and "Anticipation." Just because "Anticipation" was released three years later doesn't mean that it was written three years later. It could've been written months after they heard "Sparkle." I'm a musician myself, and I know stuff like that happens. And the Bar-Kays DID keep up with trends. That's partly why their career lasted so long. Keep trying, tough guy.
@95alanj Bruh, believe me. I know EXACTLY who the Bar-Kays are. My father gave me his copy of SOUL FINGER when I was 9. As I said, just because the Bar-Kays as an entity existed before the other funk bands doesn't automatically mean that they didn't BORROW from them. As I said, Rick Was recording in the late 60s himself.
@95alanj I would respond to all your post individually, but why bother? Just by virtue of the fact that you can't hear any similarities between "On Your Face" and "Shine" tells me that you're either DEAF or DELUSIONAL. You don't hear "ANY similarity"? You don't believe that YOURSELF, so I KNOW you don't expect ME to believe it. As far as the drinking goes, I should be asking YOU. LOL
@95alanj Just because the Bar-Kays as an entity existed before Prince, "Rick James" (whose career actually started around the same time as the Bar-Kays in the late 60s--he's OLDER than they are), Cameo and the rest does NOT negate the fact that the Bar-Kays IMITATED all of those acts. Same thing goes for you: listen to EWF's "On Your Face" and Bar-Kays "Shine"; Cameo's "Sparkle" vs. Bar-Kays "Anticipation", and other comparisons I've listed on this thread. THEN come back and talk to me.
I actually hear alot of this melody in Ace of Base's "All that she wants".from 1993. It was actually the first thing that crossed my mind when I first heard it....
Brainopain, America will fall for anything, especially when it comes to music. The fall did indeed begin in the mid 80's, but it crashed quicker than Wall Street and Wile E Coyote by the end of 1988. Fatback, The Ohio Players and others recorded their last albums that year. Hip hop, which slivered into "slip-slop" by early this decade, wimpy pop and country took over, to the detriment of all.
@ilipsoussan Yeah, YOU know what's up! Some of us can see what the Bar-Kays were all about. Some people think that because the Bar-Kays were around before Prince, EWF, Rick James, and all the rest that somehow the Bar-Kays were trend-setters. However, it was the other way around: the Bar-Kays FOLLOWED trends and made so many sound-alike records, it was ridiculous. They bit EVERY major funk act from the Ohio Players, P-Funk, EWF, and Cameo to Prince and, obviously, Rick James.
This song is too damn much. All I keep thinking about is being in the marching band playing this song in the stands at a football game. it would go so hard. This came out in 1981 off the night cruisin album.
4 real i hate rap music i like old school music when have a bad day all you gotta do is just listen to old school music you will be in a good mood i love gospel music to amen thank you jesus
hell yea this jam reminds me when were throwing a bad ass parties at my brothers pad or just cruising in the hood jessica salcido from i.e riverside califas casa blanca
True Funk ended in spring of 1987. Funk was ruined by the Casio keyboard which became affordable in '87. That unit made it easy for people to make "music" without a BAND. Profit margins jump when music labels don't have to pay people to play drums and horns. Let the Casio mimic those sounds. Casio keyboards and cheap drum machines ruined the last GREAT era of Black music. America fell for it because it was "technology," and new.
Digital recording was next to put a dagger in Funk.
@brainnopain Did you happen to notice there is no obscene language in it? The new music can never rise above mediocrity because the style inculcates curse words which can never become common fare among socially adept or even acceptable people. The retinue of misery and failure is an integral component of rap because it comes from people living in a waking hell on earth.
@brainnopain That's what I've been trying to tell all my younger cousins, that they've been conditioned to mock the funk, such as disco was. Personally, I think they just don't posses the cognitive independence to admit they dig it.... RAP back then was so much better as well, it was at least clever with some wit.
@brainnopain you are right but I gotta say that house music is really amazing, thx machines. Even if played live there is nothing compare like a good old Earth Wind and Fire ;-)
@brainnopain Funny u say dat cause i was just looking at my first original keyboard i bought in 1984; an mt- Casio. I composed hundreds of tunes off dat little piece of equipment. As for the one man band thing, blame Stevie Wonder.
@brainnopain I agree with you 1000% - the same happened to reggae music. we went through a period when hearing real drums was a rarity and as for horns...Now even the vocals are 'enhanced'
Yo strictlybiz78 bout NEW WAVE u right.. We's were were talkin bout How BAD ASS NEW WAVE was.. like the following "New Musik - The planet doesn't mind", "B52's - HOT LAVA", "Yaz - dont go & Situation.. Laters everyone Be cool. Ribeye.
This isn't a Prince or Rick James influenced song. It's a new wave track. (A funky new waver?) Just like Superfreak.(She the kind of girl you read about, in New Wave magazines) And New Wave was just the style of music at the tail end of disco. You could just as easily say it was influenced by Devo.
I seen some of you say that the BarKay sound like Rick James and influence by Prince(Musical Genuius) before there was Rick and Prince there was the BarKays so Rick was influence by them not the other way around...
Thanks for posting another Barkays classic. The Barkays (in my opinion) were not inspired by Prince, Rick James or anyone else for that mantter. It's simple - they were original and THEY ARE THE BARKAYS!!! :-) nuff said
I can remember a music video for Freaky Behavior. One of my classmates and I got in trouble with our teacher for chanting the "F-R-E-A-K-Y behavior" line in class in the 6th Grade! If anyone could track the video and post it, that would be great.
The last show Rick James did live that I saw was in 2002 in Philly and The Barkay's opened for Rick. Rick gave everything he had when he was on stage but I could tell he was in bad shape when we got back to the Hotel. Hung out with Val Young some of the band along with Larry Dodson. I'll never forget it.
Yes it's practically common knowledge that The Bar-Kays was Otis Redding's band and I can tell the difference between the sounds of Soul and Punk Funk. This particular song sounds like PunkFunk which was created and masterminded by The King of PunkFunk Rick James. Yeah George Clinton and The Parliaments were out before Sly & The Family Stone, but Sly Stone is the one who considered the influence.
I remember walking in downtown Savannah Georgia, the day after Thanksgiving in 82' listening to this on my boom box, along D-train (You're the one For Me) and Central Line (Walking into Sunshine). It was a cold, overcast day and I was young and carefree...
@wheeler x1x-i remember this jamback in 83 as a freshman in high school.man this was when funk was funk.i just wish there was someone today that can produce funk again.has any 1 thought to themselfs where in the hell did this music go? what day did it end? man these r beats that i still jam on the ipod in my ride today as i speak.2-7-10.the 60's 70's 80's early 90's greatest era of music ever.kids now could never say i like 80's r 90's because thats to old 4 them.lil wayne n other shit lmao
this is the shit here,i miss this kinda music, and fuck soulja boy..a one hit wonder,if i here that dam song again,i`m going to throw the fuck up....now lets jam....

@brainnopain Everything that you've said on here is so true
gemini19662010 1 year ago
@brainnopain Thanks for explaining that...
MrLordbaltimore 1 year ago
@brainnopain Did you happen to notice there is no obscene language in it? The new music can never rise above mediocrity because the style inculcates curse words which can never become common fare among socially adept or even acceptable people. The retinue of misery and failure is an integral component of rap because it comes from people living in a waking hell on earth.
dynagravitomagnetic 1 year ago
@brainnopain That's what I've been trying to tell all my younger cousins, that they've been conditioned to mock the funk, such as disco was. Personally, I think they just don't posses the cognitive independence to admit they dig it.... RAP back then was so much better as well, it was at least clever with some wit.
smzavala10 1 year ago 13
@smzavala10 Yep, with today's rap all they do is TALK SHIT and cuss. And the kids are like "Yeah this is good" WTF.

@brainnopain you are right but I gotta say that house music is really amazing, thx machines. Even if played live there is nothing compare like a good old Earth Wind and Fire ;-)

@brainnopain WOW, it makes sense, it's the american way, it's sad that "progress" always seems to crush something more valuable.
TheTREAZON 10 months ago

Ribeye.
MrRibeye 2 years ago
This isn't a Prince or Rick James influenced song. It's a new wave track. (A funky new waver?) Just like Superfreak.(She the kind of girl you read about, in New Wave magazines) And New Wave was just the style of music at the tail end of disco. You could just as easily say it was influenced by Devo.

FireitupBedford 3 years ago
really i didnt know rick and Larry were friends. two of my favorite singers.thats dope

Rufus before there was Rick James there was the BarKays...you mean Rick sound them...dont get it twisted...
MrIncognito444 3 years ago
