Harrison's description of George and how he looks at acting is just a perfect explanation why the PT's suck so much. 'It's right there, it's on paper, do that!'
But no, like Harrison says, you can't just do it like that, that's why people like Kurtz and others were there to help out and give directions and give George suggestions bout what could be better. With the PT it was just George doing it all alone and telling everybody; Do that, it's right there, it's simple. No George, it's not.
@CrimsonJax88 That and you had someone like his professor from film school directing the next one who an had an immaculate philosophy towards directing. That being that it's the people and characters that need to fill the screen, not the funky fantastic surroundings that are progressively CG drek.
@MichaelAarons1701 Exactly, it's such a sad thing to hear/read speeches from Lucas of 30-25 years ago when he was talking bout how special effects we're not the way to tell a story, but to support it and that adding changes to movies that became cultural heritage was wrong...just so sad. It's indeed bout the story and the characters, they make a story memorable, not the cool action scenes or the beautiful visuals. Sure they help, but in the end the story will remain in the memory.
@CrimsonJax88 Oh, no kidding. I rewatched the PT for the first time in ages and was apalled by the fact that, aside from Tatooine (which is always done in Tunisia), almost none of the backgrounds were really there with the actors. This is easiest to see on the deleted scenes where the final touches weren't added yet and you can see through the illusion.
@CrimsonJax88 Yeah and that is why the prequels have 11 plots and 9 stories, and have more caracter and plot seems then the Originals I timed it!!!!!!!
@reviewreviewer1 Kurtz may not have been an influence in writing the story, but he was essential in bringing those movies those live, I even think he shot a second unit at some point with Empire and Return. And no offense, but your argument against GL not being blamed cause he had to do everything himself is kinda not working: The reason why the PT sucks so much is because he wanted to control everything and thus let no creative input from others be there.
@CrimsonJax88 He never wanted input from others, and Kurtz helped with production aspects and yes he was second unit director on IV for a little while!!!!!
@reviewreviewer1 And big whoop bout the plots/stories: I think a movie doesn't get better the more stories/plots it has, it's about the execution of those plots/stories and GL failed miserably at that with the PT. He let characters tell bout why they have a bond (beginning scene of AOTC with Obi-Wan and Anakin talking bout a adventure with Gundarks) instead of showing it. Han and Leia had a way more flowing romance then Anakin and Padme, all because it felt naturel and it was shown, not told.
@CrimsonJax88 People also talk about their motions and talked about things are less interpatable, also I love you i know, come on you want me to stay because of the way you feel about me etc...
@reviewreviewer1 Nope, cause if you saw Empire of Dreams the docu (the vid we are responding to know) you'll even hear from himself and others that the movie was pretty much garbage and that it was only thanks to the editors that the movie became the face-paced sci-fi space opera that we all know and love. Why do you think the editors won an Academy Award that year for best editing and not GL for best directing? It's because they saved the movie.
@CrimsonJax88 Wait Lucas said the first editors cut not the film itse;f was garbage, you are twisting facts, the film didn`t win cause the 3 main OSCARS WENT TO anni Hall it got a nomination for best director while it was sci fi. I REPEAT THE FIRST EDITORS CUT NOT THE DIRECTION WAS CRITICISED, lUCAS SAID THE EDITOR DID A BAD JOB THE FIRST EDITOR NOT HIS DIRECTION, YOU ARE EVEN IF YOU DON`T WANT TO LYING!!!!!!
@reviewreviewer1 Kershner and Marquand were responsible for Empire and Return's succes, GL just wasn't good at directing, he wanted to do it his own way and sorry, but moviemaking is a process that takes many individuals who all help and have input in what's being made. You have to keep track of actors, cameramen, lighting, etc. etc. and GL didn't want the input of others, which made the process of IV so difficult and almost got GL a heart-attack. It's a sign he wasn't made to be directing.
also you are again lying he was stressed about A NEW HOIPE cause the crew didn`t listen and the film was the hardest to make at thart time. So if you don`t want to troll either say A NEW HOPE was bad, or that Lucas can be a great director, as they discribed he detailedly directed that film, and that is considered great so aknowledge that, don`t say that he was stressed cause of not allowing input when he didn`t and that the editors saved the movie from him when it was from the first editor.
Yea, Lucas even knew he really wasn't built for it. Having to deal with people as people was torturous for him (you can even tell, he seems introverted on set).
Although he didn't direct Empire or Return, he set the precedent in the first one, and on a shoe-string budget. Broke the mold for others to follow and realize that something like that can be done. So he established his stature which would have motivated anybody in taking on that task.
@at1212b Thanks, feels good having somebody support my opinion after being bothered by a certain person about this. And yeah, I totally agree that George Lucas gave others like Ridley Scott, James Cameron and others the idea to make dreams happen and give us great movies, but I think he's a better storywriter then director, he just can't handle all the pressure and indeed, he's pretty introvert, not a good sign for a director. Just look at how JJ Abrams makes movies, a ton of difference
For sure. When I think deeper about it (in a weird way after a few drinks), it's somewhat a 'shame' (really its not, but more of a 'what if') that Star Wars was such a hit, because it totally changed what he was about, what others expected of him and what he expected of himself. It really was the 'Force' that took over everything.
But given his trend leading up and including Star Wars, what other things would he have done that was out of this world. Genius is different.
@at1212b Yeah, Francis Ford Coppola is one of the few director friends George Lucas has that thinks Star Wars was bad. Not a bad movie, but bad for it changed Lucas into this industry that focused entirely on Star Wars and was thus prevented from making new independent movies. I'm also a bit split, I thank him for bringing Star Wars into our lives, but I am also very curious to what he would've made if Star Wars wasn't so big, maybe he'd be more of a Spielberg who makes different movies
@reviewreviewer1 Again, I am not saying I hate GL, I just think the guy is a better storywriter (look at Indiana Jones, that was a great concept he came up with) then a director. Spielberg made Indiana Jones work on camera as well as others making Star Wars work on camera, GL just had a good story and I thank him for that, but the guy can't direct.
@CrimsonJax88 So no he atleast directed A NEW HOPE very well, also he directed American Graffiti and THX!!!!!!! Also how were the prequels bad, that is the great triloy there is!!!!!!!!
@MichaelAarons1701 Yeah but effects and caracters should worktogether there are a lot of effects in the OT and a lot of caracter scenes in the prequels!!!!!!!!!!!
@CrimsonJax88 Uh Kurtz is never mentioned as an influence you are making it up cause they mentioned Lucas was a control freak so he wouldn`t allow them to interfere with his duties!!!!!!!!
"What was disappointing was the cantina sequence."- Mark Hammil
Really? I dunno...we the viewers find it, and still do, awesome. So I don't know really why the actors and George was disappointed by how silly it looked.
I like George Lucas, but his stance towards special effects is puzzling, and this is coming from a guy who doesn't really have any view on special effects in general.
yeah that is why everyone mentions Lucas as superviser in everything and he wrote the story and screenplay himself he was the director and excecutive producer, and studio excecutive and they mention he micromanaged, and he mentions Kasdan who only got involved with the sequels improvisation which was for one scene and the net film so really all we have is Kurtz who wasn`t excecutive producer but prodcer and filled one position where Lucas filled 5 as control freak this seems like bashing!!!!

Because she's royalty. Her accent isn't convincing but it does sound high class so its perfect. Later in the films she lets the accent go a little.
