  • That was agonizing to watch, just terrible. RIP

  • what the H***! the camera just swept over her fall n ignored her! they didnt say anything like, "oh no! * belles is down. The game filly fell ovr her feet. is she injured?" they didnt even care that a champ filly was about to die!

  • cried when it happened. everyone gasped at the party i was at, it was so sad

  • Horse meat is delicious. I hope she did not go to waste; that would be the true tragedy in this.

  • @thedemonzozo What a horrible thing to say....i will never in my life eat horse meat knowing that the animal im eating was very loved by its owner and had to go through alot to say good-bye....you are a fucking jerk.

  • @MiniDreams77 You are mistaken. I am thrifty and think such good meat should not be wasted, regardless of the love. It is precious where I am from and could feed many. What better way to honour the horse than to put smiles on the faces of those who eat it.

  • @thedemonzozo it is insaulting to horse people...i love my horseand just picturing him getting skined and put on a table is horrible.

  • @MiniDreams77 This is not insulting. I am a horse person because I like this meat. It is not horrible. It is very good.

  • @thedemonzozo first of all there bud, you WON'T be a horse person because you like the horse meat so you can forget that right now. Second of all horses shouldnt be treated like a thing that never matter because your wrong, and they are my life and I love them and a horse and rider have a bond that shouldnt be broken because by horse slaughter.. so call me when you pull the stick out, okay? and understand that you wont win this.. so give up trying.. thanks :)

  • @MiniDreams77 You are very mistaken again. I am horse person. More than you! Because I like this kind of meat and eat it a lot I have stronger bond.

  • @thedemonzozo Just because you eat horse meat does not mean you have a stronger bond with the horse,a bond is a thing that could never be broken, and by eating it that is a bond broken. i bet alot of horse people will never in their life eat a horse. i understand that you can like the horse and its meat but the bond between human and horse is very real. i hope you know that in order for you to eat the horse it was sent through slaughter.Millions if blades cutting through a thing that was loved.

  • hoje é meu aniverssario, e dois dias atras estava fazendo tres anos sem eight belles, sentimos tua falta guria, rest in peace :(

  • Racehorses mostly break their front ankles due to an unstable motion whilst changing legs, this puts strain on the bones and joints. Eight belles was no different if you watch the footage closely. She didnt trip at all.

  • they need to keep better breeding records on all these horse and also not run them in any races till they are at least 3 but that wont ever happen cause its all about the greed of the owners and trainers.

  • Hey people, in any equestrian divisions there are bad accidents.Ok, race horses fall, but so as jumpers, steeplachase horses and cross country horses. In dressage they put "rollkurs" on the horses, in show, hell, I don't even want to talk about wath they do with some TWH. Doesn't mean that all horse people make their horses suffer to death. Not all race horses champions are dead by falling...

It's sad, I agree but it's not "crual". I think the worst part of it is that the horses are to young...

  • I cried so hard when she died--i don't think i was even that sad when Barbaro got hurt. I was watching the derby live, and the first scenes they showed were her just laying there and the other horse standing over her, like a guard.

  • @MechWomanWarrior15 did you go home and perform felatio on Barbaro when he was at the New Bolton getting operated on?

  • Did anyone notice the rider's shadow made a cross at 0:08?

Since I'm pretty religious, that must be a sign that she's in a good place now.

Rest in peace, you beautiful filly. <3

  • If a horse doesn't want to run he will plant himself at the start and that's that! No one can make a horse do anything he doesn't want to do. It's always sad when a horse dies during a race but the same can happen at home in his field.

  • @Foxy9212 i couldn't agree with you more.. these people act like these horses aren't meant to run..THAT'S WHAT THEY DO!! nice post

  • 2 years is to young to run a horse.... Poor thing, however the jockey was heartborken, so I guess some people care.

  • @crazyteensJHH

    Erm...Eight Belles was 3?

  • @queenluciaa Oh, well she still wasn't at maturity. Just a year off.

  • @crazyteensJHH

A Thoroughbred's bones are bred to be completely mended by the age of 3 or 4. But the Unbridled's Song line is notorious for having Fat, yet extremely fragile progen. Resulting Eight Belles accident. It was an accident, not something planned. Just like in Cross Country,Show Jumping, etc.

  • It's important to realise that horses, if they could, would ride humans.

  • @bibelbotth

OMG, yes those people who force the horses to races lol, yes because we all know they hate to run.

People horses love to race and run, its in their blood, things happen and it is too bad, trust me when I say most thoroughbred are treated exceptionally well, they wouldn't race if they weren't

  • I agree with you booksmart115, any time a horse can fall, for example, SHOW JUMPING is just as dangerous on a horse as racing, but the majority of them love it, or you could be riding around the arena and your horse could get injured.

  • @bibelbotth WOW HEY EVERYONE VIGILANTE HERE!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @BrittanyGrace1994

There is going to be dark side of every sport and every event. But just think, these horses probably live better than humans.

  • Hey Aye, yes do your research and look at the good in the sport of Horseracing!

  • What made me sick , other than this poor filly breaking down, was the connections of Big Brown not toning down their enthusiam when they were presented with the Derby Trophy. I am sure they must have known what happened. They could have been a little more circumspect. JMO

  • Such a beautiful horse. Such tragic end, she will be missed and always respected.

  • that is not true, fillies are not finer than colts, a mare will actually have more bone than a colt, a colts muscles may develop faster and stronger, but a colt is desined to be lithe and quick , so to out run and defeat stallions in the wild, a filly to breed youngstock, thereforth being more stocky with more bone. I agree, horse racing is a sport that is pushing the horses too hard, a yearling should not be stuck into training and then when it is 2 raced until it drops, its simply inhumane!

  • it looks like he let go of her front she had to get on a cross canter to catch her balance and by doing so made it worse because cross canters are disasters at a full gallop lol

  • I seriously don't get why some people freak out about racing. I'm an eventer, myself, go ahead, check my vids. You say the horses are abused, and honestly, the horses are only abused if they are being ABUSED like ANY other horse, eventers, jumpers, reiners, barrel racers, pole benders, name it. If its abuse, its abuse. If its not, its not.

  • you're an eventer. you don't do national racing, you look after your own horse and car for it. that jockey doesn't own the horse in racing, they just race them so the care is left up to other people and it's common knowledge now that abuse happens. i'm not against any other form of horse sports apart from rodeo. if you think rodeo or racing are fine, then you're an idiot and you should actually do your research.

  • TheToyhorse, ??? what??

  • you are an idiot. She broke her two ankles from a misstep. She's a filly, therefore she is going to be more dainty than a colt, and sometimes a misstep is detrimental.

  • in horses the difference between males and females is very very small. it's not like humans where men have more muscle and women have more fat. so no she wouldnt have been more dainty. she just unluckily had a tragic fall.

  • yes, she could have been more dainty. In most cases, a colt is bred to be built thick, where as a filly is built on a finer bone. She was dainty, whether it's from her being a filly, or just her breeding. she was dainty.

  • nothing was wrong before the race.

  • even tho i am in UK i loved Eight belles i wanted her to win i know that sounds strange but i love Eight Belles RIP

  • RIP Belles

    Miss Yhoo

  • eight belles should have gotten the flowers and medals and #1 rank instead of big brown, even though big brown is awesome i still think eight belles should have gotten all the honor for what she sacraficed

  • i wanted to start racing my mare but after seeing this, i refuse to.

  • Horse racing is a risk. But I love it. EVERYTHING is a risk. Walking on the sidewalk, you culd trip, hit your head on the pavement and die. Everything we do, including animals, is risky. Some things are more dangerous than others but we all take chances. Horse racing is an amazing sport, even if horses do die=[

Now look, I'm not saying that I don't care about the racehorses. I'm saying that even if horse racing was stopped, horses would still die. I love horses and without them, who would I be?

  • i agree 100 percent, and i absolutley hate it when people ridicule the sport. these animals are not abused and definitley not neglected, and they love what they do, thoroughbreds are born to run. God bless you Eight Belles and Barbaro and any other horse lost to this sport.

  • you are very wrong. May I ask how involved in the sport you are? Honesty. The Thoroughbred, is actually a genetic mistake, the legs are too small for the body, (hence there are so many broken limb injuries)and no horse is naturally created to run so fast for so long, so it say they were bred for this is a mistake. And our barn rehabilitates retired racehorses, trust me, those horses are neglected to an extreme amount.

  • I think the major problem in horse racing is the poor breeding judgment of the breeders and the simple fact the horses are being raced too early. It seems like the horses are getting bulkier in size, but their legs don't have the substance to support the extra muscle. Also, being raced at such a young age predisposes the horses to injury and all sorts of health problems.

I am not against racing, far from it. I simply wish that the breeders/owners/trainers would be a bit smarter about it.

  • eight belles was just a very young filly. i totally agree with you though

  • All Thoroughbreds are raced at her age. Like I said, the horses are being raced too early, they have no time to grow properly to be able to handle the stress of racing. Arabian horses can't race until at least 3 years, I don't understand why Thoroughbreds can't do the same *besides the money factor of course; people want lots of money NOW*.

  • ugh horse racing is so sad and disgusting!!!

it totally breaks my heart to see these poor creatures being run to death.

sure horses are born to run.

but not in this environment under all this pressure.

  • the only reason that eight belles collapsed was that she was too young and her bones were not strong enough, if they gave her another year or two she would have been a superstar, TILL THIS DAY

  • agreed, horses do love to run, but they were created to run in short bursts, these thoroughbreds are being run too long and too fast, thats why there are so many deaths. Sure, everything in life is a risk, but look at the death tolls, this is beyond just a risk.

  • horse racing is an exciting and fast paced sport i disagree with joe because these horses aren't forced to run but they are trained professionals in a very popular sport what happened in the eight belles tragedy is a strong and healthy horse that had very strong legs and running power that in fact were strong and powerful enough to break her two front ankles so eight belles was not ran to much but was too strong for her ankles

  • yeah, but they would't have to euthanize the horse if they didn't use it to gamble in the first place! they would rather win a race that own happy, healthy horse!

  • what the hell is wrong with you?You obviouly have NO LIFE or you wouldnt even think a thought like that!you are so ignorant! hmmm,i wonder how you would feel if you died so someone said"oh,well!at least there's more food for animals who-by the way-already have plenty of food!"If your going to be stupid and heartless enough, dont do it on a video where horselovers come to tribute to fallen horses!that's like saying wars are good cuz wild animals can eat the remains of the people who passed away!

  • Gabriel Saez did nothing wrong! And if you say that, you're implying that ALL jockeys don't care, reality check! Jockey's like Mike Smith, Edgar Prado, and Calvin Borel all care deeply about their mounts. Edgar Prado was so happy that he got to visit Barbaro at New Bolton, he was really shaken up and sad that Barbaro broke down!

  • if they care so much, why would they put their horses lives at risk to win a race? and all jockeys DON'T care because they all do the same thing - put a horses life at risk JUST TO WIN A RACE!!

  • it's what the horses were born naturally to do, if you've seen them as foals like I have you'd realize that even at such a young age they already have a passion for running. And no NOT ALL JOCKEYS ARE THE SAME!!! If you're going to be so rude don't comment on this video or any video about these beautiful animals!

  • yeah there have been so many break downs on the track but its not the jockeys falt its just that the horse happend to miss step look at zenyatta and mike smith mike cares about zenyatta and zenyatta waz a heathy 4 your old mare still raceing without a problem ur right these animals r beautiful and its very sad when one breaks down but i belive that everything happens for a reason

  • yeah but they weren't born to run until their legs give way! they should be able to stop when they want to, but instead someone forces them to keep going. and yes all jockeys do the same thing. they make horses run until they break their legs and get euthinized.

  • okay, seriously? shut up and leave us all alone, none of us appriecate your rude comments that have no factual basis. Eight Belles tripped over her own feet, you do it too so you can't talk. once again THE JOCKEY DID NOTHING WRONG!

  • i can comment on a video if i want to! you can't stop me from having MY opinion and i'm not trying to stop you from having yours! i'm just saying i am against horse racing! lot's of people are! you can't stop everybody who has an opinion that is not the same as yours!

  • Joe, You say thats an opinion when you clearly don't know the difference between an opinion and stating a fact.

You stated a fact that is untrue. Jockeys do not run horses untill their legs break. Jockeys run horses untill they finish the race.

I am by no means for or against Horse racing but stop complaining. Everyone quick stop Rugby/American Football because sometimes people die. It wouldn't happen. Are you saying Horses have more rights than humans?

    Also Horses love running.

  • yeah, they love running, to a point but after that they are forced. and no not all horses break their legs but a lot do! i don't think they should race with such a strong possibility of euthinization! i wouln't care if they raced until the horse wants to stop but they run then get tired then get pushed to complete the race and that is usually when they get hurt or killed. and people choose to play football and rugby, it's their choice. the horse has no choice if they want to race or not.

  • i agree with the person under me that horses do love running. There are SOME horses that do not like it the way the most race horses do. But they usually don't run as fast as the others do. And then they'll sell those horses. I do agree with you that there's ugly sides of the horse racing too but it's not ALL like that.

  • yes, but every race horse is at risk of seriouse injury or death just by being put on the track. so it is all like that.

  • if you are agianst it, then why are you watching it on youtube. there are millions of other videos. you obviously dont hate it if you searched it and clicked the link to start watching it. dumbass.

  • You obviously don't own any horses.

  • You obviously don't own any horses, when you raise them they become like family.

  • excuse me, but i own 6 horses. And don't go telling me what it is like to have horses, ok? I know what they become i know how it feels to lose them. I know they are like family so don't try to convince me i don't.

  • Joe the only reason you have horses is to fuck them, i would recommend psychological help for your kind someone who had the same problem so they can relate to you

  • wow, if you're saying i need help for stating my opinion, then everyone who writes comments on youtube or anywhere does too (including you) so stop being an idiot and get a life...it's a free country, i can have an opinion

  • Kentucky chief veterinarian Lafe Nichols performed a necropsy and tests at the University of Kentucky's Livestock Disease Diagnostic Center. According to a review of the results by the Associated Press, compound fractures of both front legs at the fetlock joints were confirmed. They described lacerated skin on both legs, an absence of joint fluid in the damaged areas and congested lungs.

  • The filly also experienced a bruised head and hemorrhaging in the left thyroid gland, which the report blamed on her fall after the initial injuries. Larry Jones, her trainer, commented that he believes the horse just tripped over her own feet. "She's bad about stumbling while pulling up. She doesn't pick her feet up very high. It's one reason she could run very fast and far. She had the perfect motion for being effective and efficient.

  • >>>so apparently she DIDNT receive her injuries from steroids, she simply triped on her own feet!

DONT BLAME HER DEATH ON HER OWNER! THEY DIDNT GIVE HER STEROIDS!

  • the only reason why she fell was because she did a lead change and didn't quite make the lead change.

  • i think its cus of steroids they injected the poor amazing filly in the joints

ellen parker said to her husband b4 the race i hope she doesnt break down

    r.i.p eight belles

  • She never took steroids. She broke down because she was tired and tripped, and her skeletal system couldnt hold her.

  • no its this special stuf for to make there bones go stronger

    she just couldnt take it

    poor girl

    it says on the internet

  • Eight Belles was NOT on steriods.

  • *eyeroll* She wasn't on steroids. Big Brown was, she wasn't.

  • ye big brown was i think she would of got close to big brown or maybe win

I think i have got mixd up because it says something like that on the internet

    sorry

i can see she tried to make the lead change

  • she was the only horse that was not on steroids. she gave up her life for no reason. she would have won that race had the other 19 horses been clean from drugs. poor thing.

  • She made the lead change, it was just too soon for it though...

  • Unfortunate part of racing. Really tough when its your horse going down. Before getting too sentimental remember this. In the 70s 50,000 people were killed each year in the USA in car accidents now its about 30,000 each year, more than half being children. THATS MORE THAN 40 A DAY. How many animals are slaughtered each day? Yeah poor eight bells-she died being a good filly-she will be remembered. 50,000,000 people died in WW2 many more will perish in the next one- from damn human ignorance.

  • this is the worst part of racing. especially in steeplechase, when the horse falls, odds are it's going to be trampled. especially dangerous for the jockeys

  • rest in peace baby girl =] i miss you =[

  • Beautiful horse

  • this may seem a stupid q. but how did her ankles break? i cant see anything that would cause them to both break?

  • MrTofferocks-

I beleive it was because she was young and her bones were not all the way developed yet, so they weren't fit for her to race, and she was pushed too hard, and her ankles broke. Don't fault me for saying so please, that's what I thought happened, but I could be wrong.

  • actually i did some research and they said that the jockey tried slowing down eight-belles but she wouldnt for some reason!!! and one of the races was known as the La Troienne Stakes, named for one of the greatest broodmares in the United States throughout the Twentieth century, La Troienne. In june of 2008, Churchill Downs announced that beginning in 2009 this race would be called the Eight Belles Stakes in honor of the deceased filly!!!♥♥♥

  • (5 Months Later)

95% of the commenters here are suffering form mental retardation and have NO clue of what they speak.

To the 5% who knew what has happening and held their ground, I salute you.

  • poor eight belles she was so sweet

  • poor girl =[

  • rest in peace bella....

  • Poor girl. I heard from people that her leg has most likely been minorly fractured before the kentuky derby.

  • That is a terrible rumor. You should be ashamed of spreading such crap.

  • Like anyone is going to believe you-you cant even spell Ruffian correctly and it is right in front of you.

And where did you hear this shit? I NEVER heard it. And there is NO WAY IN HELL she was injured before or during the race. She was pulling away from the field and didnt break down until AFTER the race. How about you actually KNOW what you are talking about before you comment!

  • Wow, nice comeback badass. At least I have FACTUAL basis to stand on

  • I am the bitch? Look in the mirror-not only that you are also very, very immature. And how about responding only when you have something intelligent to say.

  • this is a tragic kentucy derby in horse rACING HISTORY.

  • What are you doing watching horse racing then, if you think its so cruel?

  • Did they put her down simply because she had a misstep with her right front leg? Or do you think something happened during the race?

  • looked like she just miss stepped and broke the right then the left caught the wieght and broke it also. Probably had nothing to do with the race, just a miss step. It happens with common walking horses also.

  • She was getting tired on her lead and was leaning on her other leg and refusing to swap. She leaned a little too hard, and it shattered. She leaned back onto her tired leg, and it gave out, too.

  • It didnt happen to her during the race. She was not losing ground to BB and she was pulling away from the rest of the field. She also had her ears up while galloping out.

  • and i really did not even know she fell i thought her pulled her up.

  • Its no ones fault this is just something that happens by chance. What do you think will happen when all that pressure is on one small hoof? So just get over it!

  • Part of this was the riders falt sence he had her on the rong lead !!! such yound horses are still clumsy at thats age so she triped.

  • It was not Saez's fault and she was not on the wrong lead. Get your facts straight and use spell check before you comment.

  • get a life and learn more about horses b4 you look like an idot, i agree w/ "dressagepriss" so go in a corner and curl up!

  • it looks like she swapped her lead right before the fall?

  • Your right it is a shame but they vets did the right thing. Race horses are bred to run but if they get a bad injury to leg, they're usually done. It looks like she was trying to swithch leads kinda! hmm...lol.

  • was she swapping her lead?

  • its a damn shame

  • poor thing. may she rest in peace.

  • google to alexbrownracing

This is the top horse site in the world where all things equine are discussed.

    END HORSE SLAUGHTER

  • I honestly don't know why you guys are arguing about the government being involved in horse racing. It's retarded.

  • I don't even think the government cares for the racing industry that much. No, it wasn't planned.

  • The CIA has reasons for doing everything they do. It's all a part of the Patriot Act.

  • No they wasn't the ones responsible... it had NOTHING to do with the government.

  • The CIA has nothing to do with horse racing, you idiot.

  • Not at the levels of the Kentucky Derby, and for certain not at Churchill Downs. I've been there; security is wicked where they keep the horses. You have to check your bags, remove your coat/jacket, and get a pass before going anywhere on the backstretch and you're not allowed to touch any of the horses unless they are being ridden and you have the rider's permission.

  • Government? Why would the government do this? Why would the government want to kill one horse?

  • Man, these hot-shot horse trainers race horses that are too young and they don't have their legs developed all the way. I can like horse racing sometimes, but these jockeys and trainers push these horses to the absolute LIMIT. That's why they get hurt so often. Kinda sad.

  • First Eight Belles breaks down and dies, and now Big Brown throws a greater lose at the Triple Crown. What else is going to happen in this year of racing?

  • its all george w. bush's fault.

  • How? He probably isn't even concerned about the racing industry anyway.

  • he caused eight belles to fall in order to invade iran for their oil.

  • yea and pigs fly LOL. Your opinion was highly impossible. First people blamed Hillary for her death and now George Bush?!?! You need to understand it was a freak accident and NO ONE had anything to do with it. That would be humorous to think Bush could have pulled a move like that!

  • If you look closely you can see where they detonated her ankles with explosives. take a look one more time at the video, she is running along perfectly, everything is going along fine, and then out of nowhere for no reason at all, BOOM. It is all very suspicious if you ask me.

  • First of all if they was going to hurt a horse, the evil person would probably go after Big Brown because he was the better of the field. Second of all, there were no explosives, thats a bunch of bull. Third, check Eight Belles family tree and know A LOT about inbreeding and the outcome of the inbreeding. THAT will tell you why she broke down. Thats silly to think she had explosives.

  • You're an honest-to-God psychopath, aren't you? The government didn't plan the breakdown of Eight Belles. It was a freak accident. Find somebody else to listen to your political complaints; nobody here is interested in what you have to say.

  • What the fuck are you talking about? How do those two things even REMOTELY CONNECT?

  • it's all part of bush's conspiracy.

  • Look at whats happened in the eventing world too...very sad.

  • I know.

  • Awesome faceplant. That horse must be an emo skater dude.

  • These horses want to run they love it a horse is not happy when it doesn't have a job when its out in a field eight belles didn't die because she gave up or because something was wrong with the footing or the jockies riding eight belles died loving what she was doing and gave everything to almost win her last race if that horse didn't like to race don't you think she would have stopped when she didn't feel right?RACE ON EIGHT BELLES!Don't blame anyone for her decision!

  • Also do some research before you go off and talk about something that you dont even know about. Larry Jones is not the type of trainer who would send a horse into a race if it was not ready. This filly was ultra talented as she showed by finishing second in the derby. Another thing my friend running fillies against the boys is not bad if the filly is up to the test. You have to remember in Europe and other countries over seas it is not uncommon to see fillies and mares run against colts.

  • this one failed the test. bwahahahahahahahah

  • First off ScrabbbledEggz you have no idea what you are talking about. These horses are being taking care of better than you and me. Second off what happened to Eight Belles was a freak accident. I have been in the horse industry for all of my life and never have I seen a horse break both front ankles in a race. Also the horses do not eventually die like in dog racing, i have no idea where you heard that one from. Breakdowns are rare in the sport of horse racing but they still occur.

  • The trainers are no different than dog fight trainers. The end result is the same--the animal eventually dies and the owner makes money off of the animal.

Eight Belles was just a filly for goodness sake. If they truly cared about her, they would have held off a year or so...but NOOOO...that owner could smell the money in the air. Its ok though...the owner has probably made more money off of her "death" than if she would have lived.

  • Go suck a PETA

  • We will see if a movie is made of this...then we can call an ace an ace.

  • I am sure the owner and trainer are laughing all the way to the bank. I bet that before the horse was euthanized, the owner was on the phone with Disney trying to broker a movie deal. I am sure the trainer got a cut of the action too. As far as the horse running until she broke her front legs--that's what you get when you start doping the horse.

  • She wasnt drugged you fricken retard. Stop being such an ignorant ass and know the facts.

  • It wouldn't surprise me if they did a toxology exam on the horse and found Promazine and Flunixin. Shame...

  • She was tested and was negative idiot. Quit trying to degrade Jones. He is a great trainer.

  • Having personally worked at a thoroughbred race track for a Hall of Fame trainer, it was my job to take care of the horses. I never had any problems, never even got kicked. I have seen poor, poor trainers who go hungry before their horses will. To say that any trainer doesn't care about the horse is bullshit. Trust me, losing a horse is the worst thing any trainer can imagine. The trainer did not "kill" that horse. She ran her legs off because she had the heart, she would rather die than lose.

  • I can't believe that trainer killed that horse. They don't care about the horse...they just want the money that the horse brings.

  • i remember this, such a tragedy
