there is only one con with this: It is less efficient than the wheel. The advantage of this design is the ability to traverse over highly irregular surfaces. It's not an ingenious design as people before Jansen have employed the same concept for robots. This concept is much too linear and difficult to employ on a highly irregular surface.

well first this question needs to be asked - Where would we need to use this idea? The wheel satisfies a lot of the problems involved with traversing rough terrain anyway. If Jansens concept is best suited to rough terrain. In my opinion the only real reason why nature didn't use wheels in it's design is probably because a pivotal shaft-based axis just hasn't been biologically possible (yet).
