Walker is up there with Sinatra and Orbison as the best voices in popular music over the last century. Masculine yet tender, melancholic and haunting.
The four Scott albums from the late sixties are, for my money, the best albums in the world. Amazing: there's nothing else like them. I sing these songs often. Sorry to be cheap, but it's the finest walking-home-drunk music I know.
My Dad played this to me, it's my name and when he died 22 years ago the pain is as raw, I can't play this without crying my eyes out! I love Scott, his voice is amazing! x
had sinatra or eddie fischer lived- here is what they might have done with euro pop.
the perfect antidote to hendrix, dylan and joplin.... hollywoods/english revenge on those at the barricades. little wonder that this kind of kitsch drove scott to the extremes he was to attain: to have survived this is to have known true madness.
Fell in love with this song when I heard it in the movie Joanna in 1968. It was my favorite song from the movie and I was very disappointed that it wasn't on the album soundtrack. Really happy that you posted this. Thanks for the memories.
What the hell is the name of the SW song at the beginning of the Charles Bronson film? (biographical of the British criminal, not the actor with the same name)...PLEASE!
Rest in peace Jack Segal--a fine songwriter and a very sweet man. Among his other songs were "Scarlet Ribbons" and "Laughing Boy," to say nothing of "Where You At?"
if i may humbly note, scott walker has an incredible understanding of music, his vocal capabilities, and how he could push his gift, he cud have jst sang middle of the road stuff and made a lot of money, but he chose to investigate himself and the genre, we will thank him more as time goes on...
Scott Walker just has that ability to stop everyone in the room from talking and just find a place on the wall to stare and dream until the song is over. wonderful.
My long lost Dad of 37 years just got in contact, he told me he used to sing this song, thinking about me..my name is Joanna. By the way I urge anyone who's lost touch for whatever reason with anyone esp a parent GET IN TOUCH what a wonderful feeling...
I am the long lost Dad and my lovely daughters are back in my life and boy as Joanna said there really is no feeling like it, I did used to sing this to myself and sit their thinking of her........Fantastic

he doesnt deserve alisten his new stuff really sucks, you can not compare this music to all that self indulgent crap he does now. come on attack my opinion! but my opinion is like most people who loved all the classics.if he went on tour with the walker bros he would make a fortune.
I won't attack your opinion at all. I love old Scott and the new stuff goes over my head a little. I appreciate that he is still pushing the creative envelope though. :)
the job of an artist is, as the americans say, is to 'push the envelope' if we didn't have ppl like scott walker, we would'nt develop creatively, this is mainstream now, but back then,,,
Dear mortbutane, I know that Scott has made "Climate of hunter" and others, but he don't make this voice on the same register, I regret Scott One, two, three, four... friendly,
The string and horn arrangement is soppy but this is a very good song, by a fine songwriter: Jack Segal. It says a lot that Walker had the good taste to perform it.
Hemulen40 - what you call boring, others call sophisticated. Between Scott and his so called "little disciple" David Bowie, they've produced some of the finest music of the last 40 years.
When you think Scott was in his early 20's when he sang this ... His reading of a song, the control and vocal power, the maturity; he makes today's boy bands sound pathetic.
I absolutely adore the voice of Scott Walker and wish he would sing to us again. I love his music - so unique and unchained. Thank you Mr. Walker for what you have given to the world of music. Please, give us more.
Finest voice of the 60's and probably any male vocalist over the past 50yrs....if he toured again it would be a sell out everywhere but he's virtually a recluse....can someone put JOANNA on here please...
anyone who truly loves music cannot hear this voice and not like it,and one of the most timeless classics of any period the sun aint gonna shine anymore, thank you and Peace
scott is one of my *greatest* pleasures... absolutely nothing guilty about it. agreed about bowie though, scott invented the singing style bowie took up from '74 onwards.
agreed.........i love him unreservedly. but when you play him to most modern folks they have a hard time getting their head around it. they see the 60's stuff as cheesy and the latest stuff as inpenetrable. i own most of his stuff including the beautiful boxset but only the mrs and one of my best friends understand it hence the "guilty" comment
I have had the same experiences. I made a girlfriend listen to "Jackie" once and she wasn't impressed- she said something about it being "so dramatic", as if that were a bad thing.;) maybe that wasn't the right song to start out with, but I just dropped it. oh well...
so much better than that hack Bennett
