love this! yall should definitely check out Ben Folds' new 3-disc album The Best Imitation of Myself: A Retrospective. it has live versions and some amazing new tracks!
He tends to smile a lot in this one. Im guessing it was a good crowd. It sucks he can't say the real lyrics because its live but like the discription says "Ben with a piano, doing what he does best". :)
singin and piano... he's amazing. Best way to go live. he doesnt need a band live. i almost prefer no band when he plays live. better sound to it all. and the piano part sticks out more.
he did the adult version on an Australian TV show called The Panel much better than this...but I can't find it:-( But NO doubt, I wish I had his talent:-)
this couldnt have been 2005, coldandcomposed it right if it was then he'd be playing a song to promote his new album. his look and his voice both reflect his earlier solo stuff
This was aired on Last Call with Carson Daly on May 3rd 2005. And American TV censors won't allow "shit" & "fuck" to be said on TV. In this specific case it was more likely in this it was NBC.
@tikalal Simmer down killer. I just didn't know what you meant. I've seen him in concert about 5 or 6 times but all of those times it has been after Songs For Silverman. (I was born in 1993 so I was too young to appreciate "The good old days" Haha). But he seems to hit all the same high notes and what-not. What changed if not that?
@iJimy Sorry, I wasn't insulting you if that's how you interpreted it. I can hear a clear deterioration in the quality and sound of his voice. The last instance of his voice being fine is his live album. Everything after that I can hear a deterioration.
To be completely honest, his voice sounded the healthiest in Whatever and Ever Amen.

PtolemyJones 3 years ago
nah man, this was way before eminem.
zakfmt 3 years ago
Actually this song was released on September 11, 2001. The Slim Shady album, Eminem's break out album, hit in 1999, two years prior.

I read that he wrote it in response to a SPIN magazine interview with Jonathan Davis of Korn, who called Ben Folds Five "fucking Cheers music".

@Samjew - Maybe it is, but I like it, and I don't like Korn, so it's all good for me.

2005? Really? By 2005 he was in Songs for Silverman mode. And was wearing the glasses full time.

I agree. His voice still seems good here. It had deteriorated by SFS.

@iJimy You're not listening hard enough then. I can easily tell the difference in his voice through each album.

@tikalal I gotcha. At least it hasn't gotten to the point where he has to tune his piano down, like Billy Joel.

why can he say pissed off and he cant say fuccckkkkk or shitty
twiki2099 4 years ago
woah, i like it just with piano and Ben! It really shows his versatility of playing without a band.
I might assume it was on Last Call with Carson Daly? Dammit, I missed it :(
