I weigh 164 lbs and never wear a belt when I perform dead lifts, I've gone as heavy as 315 without a belt. If your core muscles are strong they can support your back. Unfortunately most men never train their core the way its susposed to be. Instead they waste their time benching and performing a every single joint movement under the sun.
