I started using an effects program called Adobe After Effects, but I found that FX Home was much easier to use. The lightsaber effect is really quite easy to make, but the sound effects are much harder to time to the video.

I know there are several tutorials on YouTube that can teach you how to do this. Search for rotoscoping tutorials. That should get you started.
