I love how at 4:20 the guy is rolling a doobie. Love it. and Love the music. Those moments in time, music was truly something soulful. Special. Soft, mad children running around, just trying to express themselves. We've seemed to have lost that gift.
Great version ... rivals any Crazy Horse version -- when you have CSN and Greg Reeves on bass, and of course Neil Young, you have musical magic circa 1969.
Not playing at some corporate-named stadium facility, where we are robbed by Ticketmaster, StubHub etc to overpay for tickets to listen to some lip-sinked, masked, an over-produced pop-culture crap. These guys are playing at someone's house, by their pool, at Big Sur, and just jamming, and look at them, they love it. They are so into it. It's not just about a check, or a contract. They are clearly into what they are doing. Listen to the music. It's awesome.
How are the performance payments laid for this concert or any other. Does Neil get 80%, Stephen 10%, David 5% and Graham 5%? It should be based on what they bring to the show! I "just cut my hair" and "our house" please biatches!!!
This is the poncho I have been looking for for over 40 years I would suppose there is one in Tiajuana as it was rumored it was there that he bought two of everything as Stephen was reported to buy two of everything he liked. There is a black and white one and a navy blue and wheat colored one he wore at Woodstock.
Refresh my memory you have one of Stephen,s ponchos?? do you really if you do send me a jpeg of it and you may have a deal for me to but it from you. I have been looking for that pattern for over 30 years.
Oh, wow; this had to be the very peak of the psychedelic love generation. I can barely imagine what it would have been like to have been there. I bet even the people who were there can hardly imagine what it was like.
I'm gonna look up that stills/clapton song. Stills played some good guitar with CSNY, but i've heard some playing at live concerts that wasn't so great.
Stills was a terrific technical player. But prsonally, i'm always much more into sound, feel & "vibe". i know that sounds kind've dopey.. but there's something extra heavy & palpable about Neil's playing that has always gooten me off WAY more than anything Stills has ever done. e.g. Keith Richards (with exception of his unique tuning) is super simple.. essentilly a riff & rhthym player.. & while I repect what a nice note player, Mick Taylor was.. Keith is where it begins & ends for their sound
not to piss anyone off, but neither one of them is that great of a electric guitar player, They are great at playing acoustic, but electric, not so much in my opinion. I still love this song and they have their own unique playing style, kinda like Robbie Robertson.
Stills was and is more skilled at playing the guitar...Neil is quite simplistic and its really apparent when he plays with Crazy HOrse. But then, thats what he likes to play....and he is very entertaining. Get a hold of the documentary called Year of the HOrse . Its awesome. The thing is, as good as he is on the instrument , I was always most impressed by Stephen's voice. What a great singer.

For about the past 25 years, it seems no one can write a song with melody or with meaningful lyrics. 1964-1974 was the golden area of quality pop music that we will probably never see again.
Sadly, yes. Too many musicians get lucky in the music business before they even know their instruments enough to do such things as that. It's rather sad.
What a great video..thank you!! Would have loved to have been there, but I was only 7 years old. Big Sur..the guys are jamming..and Joan and Mimi are dancing!Where has this spirit gone????
A bunch of half toasted hippies at an elitist club getting stoned and fornicating in the bathrooms and hot natural spas an stuff....getting stoned out of their minds.....listening to millionaire musicians play and sing about "freedom". Then the rest of us poor saps drove home flat broke, borrowing gas for the trip back only to face going back to school and getting a job and actually working for a living. Yeah, it was real fun...for a day. LOL Of course, this is what concerts are for. ;)
I was there man! This was in 1969, middle of October, weekend during my senior year! We paid like 4 or 5 bucks with the proceeds to benefit world peace or something that was to be taught at the Institute there. The best part was during this "peaceful concert" in front of 12,000 people at the Esalen Institute (where Joan Baez was living at the time) was when Stephen Stills attacked a loudmouth heckler in the crowd during there performance. He was making fun of Steve's fur jacket. How Ironic!
FUCK yeah. Look at those people, from all walks of life, coming together. It didn't matter your religion, the color of your skin, who your family was, or where you were from. Nowadays we have a hard time making eye contact with people, and in this video you have total strangers with all sorts of different backgrounds joining hands and embracing the virtues of peace and love amongst each other. That is a powerful scene....what the fuck ever happened to this country?!!
This is from the movie "Celebration at Big Sur" (1969). CSNY, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell and others played. I was held at the Esalon Institute. There are natural hot springs there and it became a big hippie hangout in the 1960's. Look it up.
the arrangment of this live version is a bit like Southern Man on the 4 Way Street albums.. Somewhere in the middle of the solo they decided to pick up the tempo. They brought it back down just in time for the last verses. THANK YOU for this posted version of a great Crazy Horse song!
So great to see them back at the time they were all getting along and could smile at each other, before musical differences separated them.
Of course some people have written it all came down to Still's being envious of Neil's music being "Up front," more often than the other's and that is a human nature reason for their split.
Still, today, they can stil gather to give us something that is and always will be timeless.
did he record this with crazy horse or CSNY, cause wikki lists the track being from Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, and that was neils second solo album, can sumone clairify?
WELL! Most Assuredly, THE Esalen Institute,in BIG SUR CA., The contributer, had Seen A Still Photo that was B&W when he was in High School!

THANX for the Posting, Cadyaroop! (Also- who is the 'ACE' @the End of the TAPE??)
Actually my friend, it's Mt Tamalpais and the mountain shot here ain't it. Mt Tam is in Marin county about 100 miles North but you're right about the footage.Beautiful.
neil ans john? huh? no no no not right.john and david well, hmmm or graham? but no your idea is the clash of isolation/independency. not right sorry. joni and john instead of yoko-I better stop
chupa your a fag csny is the best band no matter what there clothing looks like. They could have on barney an power ranger suits on and i wouldnt give a flying fuck.
ok man but thats what was popular at that time... these guys had so much freekin money they didnt know where to spend it, they had all the sweet cars, guitars, and drugs they could ever wont so they bought wild cloths, in my opinion i think the sideways hats and pants down below your ass and white kids acting black is more "faggy" then these cloths...
I love how at 4:20 the guy is rolling a doobie. Love it. and Love the music. Those moments in time, music was truly something soulful. Special. Soft, mad children running around, just trying to express themselves. We've seemed to have lost that gift.

Hi, nobody's pissed but no way josey Mr. PageandPlant4life, both are excellent electric g. players.
Stills"go back home" with Clapton is one of the best electric songs in my book.
Young's electric perfrormances belong in the rock hall of fame (sothern man, cortez the killer), many more.
As a duet they were known for they elctric duels (four way street electric side).
Not all is the faster you play but the high quality in Technique as well as the personal sound and style the player has.

So great to see them back at the time they were all getting along and could smile at each other, before musical differences separated them.
Of course some people have written it all came down to Still's being envious of Neil's music being "Up front," more often than the other's and that is a human nature reason for their split.
Still, today, they can stil gather to give us something that is and always will be timeless.

what exactly was nash's job in this band again?
jtraske 3 years ago
He's playing keyboards here. He wrote some decent songs. He harmonised well with the others. I think he made a lot of what CSNY did happen.
cadyaroop 3 years ago
He keeps the peace and keeps the others ego's in check...except Young...his own Mamma dont get any respect!

Crazy Horse was the backing band for Everybody Knows this is Nowhere, that's why it kicks so large.

imagine the music that neil young and john lennon could've made if they had partnered up
src9996547 3 years ago
Even though Lennon said he would rather rust than burn out, he also said he admired Neil's music. What a great combo that could have been.
RobEye79 3 years ago
Would have been interesting to see what would have become of a Young, stills, nash project at this time.
And yes...Neil has gone on to be the only viable member of this group.

Yeah, you're right - no album success at all. Thats if you don't count the 30 million album sales worldwide. LOL

cool jam, faggy clothes
chupachupben 3 years ago
ok man but thats what was popular at that time... these guys had so much freekin money they didnt know where to spend it, they had all the sweet cars, guitars, and drugs they could ever wont so they bought wild cloths, in my opinion i think the sideways hats and pants down below your ass and white kids acting black is more "faggy" then these cloths...
