The notes are played so lightly and he made the melody sound so vulnerable. The whole song feels like it could fall apart like ash. Elliott knew how to be proficient at resinating a feeling inside a song and the evidence is plain to hear in this particular track.
The New Moon albums is very touching and thought provoking.
Asit's been said why in the world is rubbish like britney spears and madonna etc idolised, when what I am listenin to right now is the trues talent? Such a cruel world, but that's the beauty of our departed friend Elliott he generally saw through the crap of superficial fame. Such an immense talent, one of the best I wish I could have met him, such a real gentleman who is worth every postive comment cos he is real, we miss you man
This is my all-time favourite Elliott song. I don't know why, it is just incredible. It makes me so happy to know that there was someone who could make such brilliant music. We were so lucky. :)
In the autobiography he wrote, E said something like "If anyone knew that life could indeed be a 'motherfucker', it was Elliott Smith" That may not be word for word but I haven't read the book in a little while.
He looked so ill in that first shot. This is my favorite song. It reminds me of a bawn fire I was once at. They said he was crazy, and in the instant of sticking up for my friend elliott, I stuck my hand in the fire, anoncing miserably, that this is crazy, he was brilliant, and theres so much to defend. When I think of him
I like Bob Dylan, the Beatles, all those classic artists but I don't think anyone will ever match Elliott. His depth of feeling and ability to transmit so much emotion through his lyrics and vocals and even his guitar is simply amazing. The only artist who can make "motherf*cker" sound gentle and understanding.
I listened to this song on repeat yesterday, and wandered around a bustling grocery store. It felt poignant to stand and listen to the song while I watched people hurry to and fro, unempathetic and disaffected. I've felt really alone since I went 4000 miles away from college, but Elliott, Nick Drake, and Cobain's acoustic shit have all been a source of comfort. Bless Elliott for being a source of release that I can empathize with.
Indeed. I have to change it when I sing it, though, because I have a regular deal at a local café that I think I'd lose for dropping "motherfucker." Feel terrible about changing the original every time.
I must say, this song is amazing, and well, I was stoked to hear Jimmy Eat World throw down that lyric and refrence this song. Good shit people, good shit.
