The simple fact that we are not ready for hydrogen fuel cell cars, can be showed the love and joy for Honda and Toyota in this country, the old ones all the way up to the new ones. By the general public, not a just group of enthusiasts. Everyone loves gas mileage and reliability. Not mention ease/cost for repair. That sadly will be the end of domestic cars in this country. We will soon see more Japanese supercars in this country, the GTR was the beginning for better or worse. Mostly better.
I have heard so many bad things about the insight. Also why does it look like a Prius, why do they have to make full effecient hybrids look so fucking ugly.
Well I don't think it's "Why does the Insight look like the Prius" as much as it is "Why does the Prius look like an Insight"
Don't forget that the first gen Insight came out before the Prius, it had the same look from behind as the new Prius, so the Prius did end up copying the Insight if you look back.
Not a fan of hybrids. They feel kinda wonky when driving. And I hate the CVT that is in most. It's like having a rubber band for a tranny. I'll stick to old fashioned dirty pure internal combustion and a proper manual gear box.
Derek D. Your a really cool guy, great actor and really funny. have you ever thought about having your own youtube channel and posting videos outside the FLD/Next New Networks studio?

As for the hydrogen story, the Germans and Japanese already have fully functional hydrogen vehicles. Are we doomed to see the US falling behind once again?
Dude your an idiot, he did it to save most of the population from paying extra taxes.... like they said, the cars wouldn't be out for another 10+ years. During out major economical problems, it seems like a no brainer. Think before you speak
It's a shame that the hydrogen development budget has been cut. This still brings us to the problem of CO2 emissions, where the power-station will be responsible rather than the motorist.
Any infrastructure is going to be expensive on a national scale, and it's looking like the buck is being passed on who should do it already.
I personally wouldn't just because for me the Honda Insight is a redesigned Toyota Prius, and with the economy having issues right now, the Prius seems to be the car driving everywhere, and so I kinda have a strong dislike of the car. But if you drive a Prius, no offense to you, its your choice, and I don't hate you, just the car you drive ;D
I think you will find the insight came before the prius, and styling ques from the old CRX can still be seen in today's insight making the design more Honda's than toyota's.
Still, the base look of the Honda Insight to that of the Toyota Prius is decently close. And I also did see a bit of the old CRX in the design, but not a HUGE difference is seen between the Insight and the Prius( in exterior design ).
I love the show but please enough with the white belt. Derick please get a new belt. Herb Tarlek is running around holding up his pants wondering where his belt is. Again you da man and I love the show.
I'd buy the insight. It's affordable to buy and run. Plus gas prices have been slowly rising and I moved a cheaper town away from work so I need the fuel savings. Too bad Chevy is always late to the trends with their Volt and Camaro. I think Mustang took all the retro glory which I hope will die soon and the Japanese deserve the glory for their hybrids. Saving money and the environment will never go out of style.
i have a problem if i can heel toe with my big toe on the brake and pinkie on the gas, would i in fact be a heel toe hero? any clarification would be appreciated
not investing now in a hydrogen infrastructure is ignorant...especially if the excuse is that its too cost intensive. what infrastructure investment ever in the recorded history of mankind was cheaper if invested in later? things will only get more expensive and burning hydrogen is the most viable alternative long term.
the development is just too expensive, he has to make decisions that can get the american auto market in the black and put our tax dollars towards something that has a more immediate impact.
I was thinking about buying an import but then I realized that I was American, not a d-bag, and definitely not some rice rocket kid. The best thing is when you see the expression on these kids face when I blow their doors off with my F-150! "huh?"
Oh and totally go for that enthusiast apparel situation if you don't mind waiting 3 1/2 weeks for your order. That's my running total so far and I still haven't received shit!
so you're saying all import owners are d-bags and rice rocket kids. you're f-150 is a sitting duck next to my 2liter "rice rocket" so u better watch the generalizations you make. i love domestics and imports equally so stop hatin' for no apparent reason
most hondas sold in north america are made by americans...people are prolly saying huh? because they are asking themselves 'doesnt that hick know hes wasting gas in that big inefficient POS?' ...and no i wouldnt buy an insight. i would plunk down cash for a hydrogen burning BMW though.
that is just sad hydrogen is the ultimate fuel. people never thought that computer in the late 70" and early 80" could not been more "smaller and more powerful" but history comes to show us that if we put our minds to it we could accomplish just about anything.
the body styles are the same because they are very aerodynamic, they look the same for a reason ... though i will still argue the front of the insight looks nicer than the prius
hell no to the insight. its like crocs shoes fuckin ugly lol i aint buying one till they make it look better. Fug-ly doesn't begin to describe the new insight. i mean it is better than the first insight with its ugly wheel covers but the new one is still fug-ly lol

Who cares about being environmentally friendly?! The world will end in 3 1/2 years anyway! I say burn all your old tires and shoot all the endangered species now.
Hybrids are for people who look at cars as transportation and nothing more. I don't think any car lovers will purchase a hybrid. They are not exciting, or fun at least for now. Also don't forget about the smug. ;)
fucking obama. hes going to say hes shut down the coal industry because he is for alternative energy, but now cut the hydrogen cars. now he wants to promote electric cars which rely on coal...
Yes Derek, hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. But most of it is bonded to oxygen in the form of water, and it takes about as much energy to seperate the same amount of hydrogen from oxygen as you'd generate from it in a fuel cell
Hydrogen fuel cells will not be practical until a more efficient way to extract hydrogen from water is found, and with the economy the way it is, the government really can't afford to fund that research.
Your argument is slightly flawed, yes you get about the same energy out of hydrogen as you to need to 'make' it (less actually) but storing energy as hydrogen is a much more practical way to do it. Hydrogen can be moved and manipulated much quicker than electricity inside batteries.
We use electricity to 'make' hydrogen, and we can gain electricity from renewable sources. Is large scale electrolysis REALLY more hassle than drilling oil from a sea bed and refining it?
You're still using more energy to convert it than you get from it. It's impractical.
Besides, the government needs to be investing in something that works NOW, not something that is going to need a lot of funding and research to get going. We already have gas stations all over the country, but they would need to be retooled to work with hydrogen if they were to do it.
I'm not saying that hydrogen will never work, I'm just saying that now, in the middle of a major recession, is not the time
That is not the point, you will never get 100% efficiency in turning water into hydrogen by electrolysis. You need to the think of the hydrogen as storage medium not as energy. Batteries take hours to charge, gas tanks take seconds to fill. Fuel cells are practical, batteries are not.
Aside from that, recessions are the perfect time to invest in infrastructure projects, they create skilled jobs which cannot be outsourced. Money goes to local workers and then right back into the economy.
actually hydrogen is only a energy convener, its not really a energy source. you put in as much energy to extract hydrogen as get get out of it when you burn it. And the energy used for the extraction comes from the power grid which is mostly powered by coal. And that rotary engine is inefficient, there are pickup trucks getting better mileage then the rx-8 that's why there's only one car in mazdas line up with that engine not to mention it's the only current production car with a rotary.
im with you, man cause global warming is a joke, and the government needs to get the fuck out of the way and let the free market do whatever it wants to do
have you looked at a graph of avg global temp over the past...500 years? Its...going up. I call that global warming. Do you have any scientific basis for your claims? Or do you just think government is evil and out to get you and constantly creating lies? Show me real scientific evidence that says global warming is a lie. Oh, read a history book too, look at what happened last time we let the free market go....it was called the great depression.
Yes, hydrogen is fused with oxygen to make electricity. enough to power your house. look up GM Hi-wire It 's been around for over ten years now and runs on electricity that is made from hydrogen!
whats the point in a hybrid!!!, they cause much co2 then a normal car!!, hopefully the honda clarity will be coming out in the uk cause thats is a brilliant car!!!
The Honda hybrid will be de-throned as soon as the Volt and later the Converj comes to market. All top selling cars will be de-throned. I'll wait another 12 months to never buy gas again. Adding extra HP is an easy as adding another 100 lbs of lithium batteries. Long live GM.
No Insight for me. I think they're ugly. I doubt I'd ever buy any kind of hybrid, really. Most of them are ugly as shit and not something I'd want to be caught dead in. If they made a hybrid that looked good (like the hybrid 370z from a few episodes ago) then I might be more interested. Of course, driving around in a Jeep all the time, fuel economy isn't one of my big concerns. 30 mpg seems like a godly amount to me.
Let's get it started! I really question if we'll see a good deal of hydrogen vehicles on the road nationwide, rather than just in Los Angeles or San Francisco. The Mille Miglia(?) is still around? Wow! Cool stuff. I'm not a "tree hugger," but I've never hated hybrids. Would I want the new Insight? I don't know. I'm interested as to how the A8 will look inside and out. I'd love to see more Audi A4-derived elements on future sedans and coupes. Love the news bits on newer Lotuses. Take care!
i would never buy an insight, or any hybrid. people don't realize how expensive/environmentally damaging these cars are in the long run. when somebody buys a hybrid over a diesel to be green, they're only thinking about the present, not the future.
Has anyone else noticed how ugly cars have been getting these days? I mean, look back at the '60s, '70s, and '80s, the cars back then were great. The car companies like Ford, Chevy, Dodge, and some others were coming out with cars like the Mustang, Camaro, Charger, Challenger, and lots of others almost every year back in the mid-60s. And now cars are getting to look like BOXES! Or mabe not a box but an ugly p.o.s.. Dont get me wrong though, Lamborghinis, Ferraris, and other alike still look good
a) the government shouldn't be funding research in the first place (the government isn't a business) and b) i personally think hydrogen is the only option that actually seems to have potential in the long run (but apparently the Obama administration doesn't care about anything past 20 years from now)
Ugh, no I would not buy a honda insight. It looks almost the same as a prius, and I will not buy a car that looks like an egg. Make a "car shaped" hybrid car and I might be interested.
And because of that, I've been looking into the fusion, I'm aware that there are hybrids other than the prius and insight(might as well be the same damn car imo), but I gotta say, I'm completely sick of seeing egg-shaped cars on the road, didn't people learn how hideous egg cars were with the geo metro?
i would get the insight. it's supposed to be sporty, it's a honda, it's reliable, it's cheap, and it's efficient. why not? but then again, why not a ferrari.
I'd buy an insight if it had one of dem s2000 engines that go whoo weee tang that thing dem be fast, but seriosuly maybe if i was 50 I'd buy one. They need to start turbocharging/supercharing hybrid's gasoline engines to make them faster "and more efficient" if you like that kind of crap
I've driven the 2000 Honda Insight for 9 years. It's light, small and tight, but it handles very well, has adequate power and averages 65 miles per gallon. The new one looks to be more practical. Who can argue with that?
I do not like the honda insight i drove one on a testdrive and it was very uncomfortable and cheap i also am not a fan of the styling but i was willing to get pass that i decided just to get a civic instead

Money goes to local workers and then right back into the economy.

what the hell man? can't change a tire?

Bad desicion on the hydrogen bill. Mazda has made wankel engines capable of running on hydrogen and such, gives 0 emissions = Earth saved.....OR NOT.
Dennnniswith4Ns 2 years ago
actually hydrogen is only a energy convener, its not really a energy source. you put in as much energy to extract hydrogen as get get out of it when you burn it. And the energy used for the extraction comes from the power grid which is mostly powered by coal. And that rotary engine is inefficient, there are pickup trucks getting better mileage then the rx-8 that's why there's only one car in mazdas line up with that engine not to mention it's the only current production car with a rotary.

If I had the money for a Honda insight. I'd go buy a Subaru WRX & get some Taco Bell.

in my opinion, hydrogen is the answer - not electric!
Ji99i3 2 years ago 2
Funny a hydrogen car will be electric.
terridot 2 years ago
sorry can you explain?
Ji99i3 2 years ago
Most hydrogen cars will have fuel stacks that create electricity that charges a battery that drives electric motors.

im with you, man cause global warming is a joke, and the government needs to get the fuck out of the way and let the free market do whatever it wants to do
thesixshot 2 years ago
have you looked at a graph of avg global temp over the past...500 years? Its...going up. I call that global warming. Do you have any scientific basis for your claims? Or do you just think government is evil and out to get you and constantly creating lies? Show me real scientific evidence that says global warming is a lie. Oh, read a history book too, look at what happened last time we let the free market go....it was called the great depression.

hydrogen is a joke,,,it takes electricity to make hydrogen , and where does that come from,,,,coal plants,, damns , gas generators...
thesixshot 2 years ago
wrong hydrogen is being made from your car battery's acid right now.
yimig 2 years ago
and you think thats enough to power a car
thesixshot 2 years ago
Yes, hydrogen is fused with oxygen to make electricity. enough to power your house. look up GM Hi-wire It 's been around for over ten years now and runs on electricity that is made from hydrogen!
yimig 2 years ago
whats the point in a hybrid!!!, they cause much co2 then a normal car!!, hopefully the honda clarity will be coming out in the uk cause thats is a brilliant car!!!

point of hybrid is to increase millage. just like why do they make diesel car? to increase millage.

If i had to get a prius or insight i would have to drive the new toyota
PATTYZ102 2 years ago
The Honda hybrid will be de-throned as soon as the Volt and later the Converj comes to market. All top selling cars will be de-throned. I'll wait another 12 months to never buy gas again. Adding extra HP is an easy as adding another 100 lbs of lithium batteries. Long live GM.

I would pick a Honda Insight over a Toyota Prius anyday.
BTW: Is Alex Gizela ever coming back for a FLD episode?
desimunda116 2 years ago
I'll buy the first hybrid that gets 0-60 faster than a stock mustang gt, has a stick shift, and costs no more than a stock mustang gt. End of story.

Funny Japan has no problem with hydrogen cars.
Short term fixes are just that, short term. Obama doesn't car about our future.

Insight? no. Volt? YES
biggieshortie13 2 years ago

I would never buy a honda insight unless it was the hydrogen one.

Dont get me wrong though, Lamborghinis, Ferraris, and other alike still look good

a) the government shouldn't be funding research in the first place (the government isn't a business) and b) i personally think hydrogen is the only option that actually seems to have potential in the long run (but apparently the Obama administration doesn't care about anything past 20 years from now)
otmlb1128 2 years ago 2
I like the Jetta TDI wagon
if only it wasn't a VW!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!
40 mpg and lots of room sounds great, but not if it's Mexican junk. German prices for Mexican quality
$120 per hour labor
NO WAY

Ugh, no I would not buy a honda insight. It looks almost the same as a prius, and I will not buy a car that looks like an egg. Make a "car shaped" hybrid car and I might be interested.
prisoner1138 2 years ago
How about a Ford Fusion hybrid?
looks just like a regular Fusion
bottomlayer 2 years ago
And because of that, I've been looking into the fusion, I'm aware that there are hybrids other than the prius and insight(might as well be the same damn car imo), but I gotta say, I'm completely sick of seeing egg-shaped cars on the road, didn't people learn how hideous egg cars were with the geo metro?

What did you expect? Common sense from a one party system?

i would get the insight. it's supposed to be sporty, it's a honda, it's reliable, it's cheap, and it's efficient. why not? but then again, why not a ferrari.

Unless it had RWD, a manual transmission, and decent looks, I would never want to own an Insight. Ever.
agilefalcon16 2 years ago
the old Insight at least offered a manual transmission!
bottomlayer 2 years ago
and straight pipes
fantastiko111 2 years ago
I'd buy an insight if it had one of dem s2000 engines that go whoo weee tang that thing dem be fast, but seriosuly maybe if i was 50 I'd buy one. They need to start turbocharging/supercharing hybrid's gasoline engines to make them faster "and more efficient" if you like that kind of crap
fantastiko111 2 years ago
a K20 hybrid would be SWEET
200+ hp from lil four cylinder
the hybrid's electric motor does two things:
obviously, it lets the engine shut off to increase aggregate MPG
BUT
it also adds low-end torque traditionally lacking in high-revving VTEC Hondas
Insight Type-R anyone?
bottomlayer 2 years ago
don't forget the turbo even at low boost it would be awesome, but its probably never gonna happen
fantastiko111 2 years ago
I've driven the 2000 Honda Insight for 9 years. It's light, small and tight, but it handles very well, has adequate power and averages 65 miles per gallon. The new one looks to be more practical. Who can argue with that?
1212354 2 years ago
First of all, you can't get a manual transmission anymore, so that lowers mpg's
You'd probably get 70-80 mpg on the new one if it offered such a transmission
bottomlayer 2 years ago
I do not like the honda insight i drove one on a testdrive and it was very uncomfortable and cheap i also am not a fan of the styling but i was willing to get pass that i decided just to get a civic instead
