Alan Bates was brilliant as Michael Henchard . My wife introduced me to a lot of these classics. We have this on DVD, can't see us watching any other version of The Mayor of Casterbridge now . No one could play this part like him .
I have just finished watching all seven episodes on DVD. Quite brilliant and well worth buying. No slick camera gimmicks or too clever editing to distract you from what is happening in front of the camera, and fine acting by all Janet Maw and Anna Massey in particular.
@goldenfilly Roman Polanski made a very good one starring Nastassja Kinski , Peter Firth , and Leigh Lawson . It won three academy awards , Cinematography , Art Direction and Costume Design . 1980 .
A lot of acting in this series is just so good it is capable of raising goose-bumps. The first meeting between the adult Elizabeth-Jane and Henchard, for instance, in this episode, is completely convincing. And the final scene in the final episode is absolutely gut-wrenching in its intensity.
And the adaptation of course is by the great Dennis Potter.
Full marks also to the immensely talented production and costume designers on this series.
Thank you very much for uploading this engaging series. It's a movie that makes me stop and think about interpersonal relationships, forgiveness, compassion, integrity, and morals. Magnificent!
