AT&T switched from offering Dish Network to offering Directv not too long ago. My prediction is Directv will pull far ahead of Echostar before eventually buying them out.
The only reason that broadcast, over-the-air can't broadcast 1080p is that the bandwidth required is very high, and the amount allocated to each channel doesn't currently support it.
Continuing, high-def discs (Blu-ray and HD DVD) do support 1080p, since they have much higher bandwidth. In theory cable, satellite, and IPTV on the Internet could also support 1080p, since they don't have the same government-mandated bandwidth limits, they just have to figure out some technical issues related to having many channels with high bandwidth requirements.
Echostar will never merge with DirectTv, AT&T will likely happen first.
