I love how people are bashing Consumer Reports for their review. They are OBJECTIVELY testing these cars so I don't understand the negativity. Harsher reviews leads to manufactures making BETTER cars! Here's some free advice: make a your OWN YouTube account and review the damn car yourself and explain why it is an excellent car. My bias is that I hate the interiors of BMWs. lol

Its true that the new 5 series isnt as sharp anymore, but do I really want that in a big sedan? I think no. Id want that in an M3, but less in a 5 series. I do want the steering to be dead around the center, because in a high-ish-end vehicle I dont want to drive long distances at high speed like in a 70s movie (constantly playing with the steering).

A lot of people seem to disagree with this review but based on what I've read in number of other magazines there seems to be a consensus that the new 5 series no longer drives that well, this is probably because the new 5 series rides on a shortened 7 series platform. I'd have to agree with this review, BMW has lost it's focus. BMW's in recent years have been tuned for understeer, this is probably because alot of new BMW buyers in emerging countries don't have a lot of driving experience.
Of all the reviews i see about the new 5 series, it's the first time there's so many bad things said on the car. Maybe the reviewer is dumb or he's only reviewing super sports cars normally. One way or the other, he's dumb.
Disappointing review. First - premium is recommended, not required. Controls are complicated if you never used a computer and drove Geo Metro for past 15 years. Move gear box forward to go reverse is a problem? Did you forget how it works on the manual gear boxes? Why does that make any difference? How do you quantify "lack of steering feedback"? Last, the iDrive control is closer to passenger because its where drivers arm naturally rests. Get another job.
The 5 Series isn't as good as they used to be. Most of the reviews I've seen said the car felt too heavy and the steering feel was awkward and improperly weighted, placing the A6 before this in terms of driving feel. If you ask me, cars nowadays are so artificial since drive-by-wire and all the electronic gizmos. Even the new "ultimate driving machine" BMW's don't cut it. If you want real driving pleasure drive an old Porsche.

To truly appreciate a BMW you need to own it and drive it over time. I have been a 5 series owner since 1995 with a string of cars ranging from the E34 1993 520i to my present 2008 530i. These cars are ruthlessly efficent, safe, sporty and lets face it, its a BMW, a car that is fun to drive and that makes life a little better! It does everything you want it to do and more. I live in Norway with extreme conditions, especially in the winter. my BMWs handles it with gusto!

@baujahr90er I am a BMW fan, drive a used 7-series, and am considering a 2011 535i. I drove this car yesterday with a 6-speed manual transmission but without dynamic suspension (no ability to change from comfort, to normal, to sport suspension). It's stuck in comfort. My 7-series in sport mode is tighter than this car without dynamic suspension package. It's probably part of the reason the 6-speed 2011 is still on the lot. There's no reason for sport package if it's not going to be sporty.
Only BMWs worth considering are M3 or Z-4 (but too overpriced) rest are just beached whales with crappy engineered tech that spends more time in the stealership that a hooker spends in the free clinic.
But the butt sniffing BMW fanboys will defend their brand till the end.
I drove it and I didn't like a bit of its driving dynamic. The wheel and suspension are as soft as a Lexus, no kidding. It's just too heavy to be enjoyable when driving. I know many love BMW, but just go drive a 5, it's not an ultimate driving machine. I decided to go to 3 after test driving the 5.
i dont understand why ppl quickly criticize the guy for being honest. I love the car and will probably still get it when its time to change my car but he is right about a lot of stuff... y the hell does my wifes 25k accord have an adjustable seatbelt but this beautiful vehicle that costs twice as much doesnt. it is stupid to cut those kind of corners. honesty is the best policy and i appreciate his.

this review is spot on, believe me, i had the previous model for 5 years now, and it was awesome, it was full option and 3 liters, when i raced the car it was realy tight and felt sporty, 3 weeks ago i totalled it, and now im buying a new one, and i testdrove the new one and it sucked, its a small 7 series, styling is awefull accept interior, instead of 5 im gonna buy the 335i convertible, the much better choice, and the one if you want a sporty bmw. the new 5 series now is only for old guys...

I completely agree with him on idrive. It's far too complicated and that gear shifter not only looks odd, but is just to0 unintuitive. That's why I'd get the 2014 M3 sedan. Same kinda looks, similar but punchier 6 cylinder engine and the idrive is optional.

@MrArasht1 I agree. Most negatives were technology, and that takes some learning and getting used to like anything else. When you pack so much stuff in the car, sure - you are gonna have to spend time to learn about it. Then comments about body-roll is unfound - review says it handles body roll well, but car has lost its sportiness. Whatever, sports suspensions are defined how well it handles body roll.
I drove the 2012 650i which is basically like 100% like this in the front I have to say it is amazing, if u guys feel discouraged seeing this video test drive it if u can afford it.. this guy is saying it's worse than the previous gen well I have the previous gen and this new version is far better than the previous version in everything

Disappointing review. First - premium is recommended, not required. Controls are complicated if you never used a computer and drove Geo Metro for past 15 years. Move gear box forward to go reverse is a problem? Did you forget how it works on the manual gear boxes? Why does that make any difference? How do you quantify "lack of steering feedback"? Last, the iDrive control is closer to passenger because its where drivers arm naturally rests. Get another job.

The 5 Series isn't as good as they used to be. Most of the reviews I've seen said the car felt too heavy and the steering feel was awkward and improperly weighted, placing the A6 before this in terms of driving feel. If you ask me, cars nowadays are so artificial since drive-by-wire and all the electronic gizmos. Even the new "ultimate driving machine" BMW's don't cut it. If you want real driving pleasure drive an old Porsche.

We have 530d and its way better than this reviewer showed. I think he is a funboy of MB becouse he looks old and what more im sure he's a virgin or something.Damn this guy pissed me.
Maybe there is some negatives about this car like hard suspension but in good countries with nice roads that is good feature. also there is not enough space for legs in the back (im 195cm)Slow steering ? C'mon in new 5series steering its better than in my father x5.

To truly appreciate a BMW you need to own it and drive it over time. I have been a 5 series owner since 1995 with a string of cars ranging from the E34 1993 520i to my present 2008 530i. These cars are ruthlessly efficent, safe, sporty and lets face it, its a BMW, a car that is fun to drive and that makes life a little better! It does everything you want it to do and more. I live in Norway with extreme conditions, especially in the winter. my BMWs handles it with gusto!

@baujahr90er I am a BMW fan, drive a used 7-series, and am considering a 2011 535i. I drove this car yesterday with a 6-speed manual transmission but without dynamic suspension (no ability to change from comfort, to normal, to sport suspension). It's stuck in comfort. My 7-series in sport mode is tighter than this car without dynamic suspension package. It's probably part of the reason the 6-speed 2011 is still on the lot. There's no reason for sport package if it's not going to be sporty.

I drove it and I didn't like a bit of its driving dynamic. The wheel and suspension are as soft as a Lexus, no kidding. It's just too heavy to be enjoyable when driving. I know many love BMW, but just go drive a 5, it's not an ultimate driving machine. I decided to go to 3 after test driving the 5.

i dont understand why ppl quickly criticize the guy for being honest. I love the car and will probably still get it when its time to change my car but he is right about a lot of stuff... y the hell does my wifes 25k accord have an adjustable seatbelt but this beautiful vehicle that costs twice as much doesnt. it is stupid to cut those kind of corners. honesty is the best policy and i appreciate his.

This guy, made the car sound like an awful car, which is just a waste of money. What a car review is for, is to tell the most advantages and the disadvantages, not just the things that don't "suit" the reviewer. People are not angry with him for being honest, they criticise him for the bad review he did, in which they are all true.

this review is spot on, believe me, i had the previous model for 5 years now, and it was awesome, it was full option and 3 liters, when i raced the car it was realy tight and felt sporty, 3 weeks ago i totalled it, and now im buying a new one, and i testdrove the new one and it sucked, its a small 7 series, styling is awefull accept interior, instead of 5 im gonna buy the 335i convertible, the much better choice, and the one if you want a sporty bmw. the new 5 series now is only for old guys...

I completely agree with him on idrive. It's far too complicated and that gear shifter not only looks odd, but is just to0 unintuitive. That's why I'd get the 2014 M3 sedan. Same kinda looks, similar but punchier 6 cylinder engine and the idrive is optional.

@MrArasht1 I agree. Most negatives were technology, and that takes some learning and getting used to like anything else. When you pack so much stuff in the car, sure - you are gonna have to spend time to learn about it. Then comments about body-roll is unfound - review says it handles body roll well, but car has lost its sportiness. Whatever, sports suspensions are defined how well it handles body roll.

I drove the 2012 650i which is basically like 100% like this in the front I have to say it is amazing, if u guys feel discouraged seeing this video test drive it if u can afford it.. this guy is saying it's worse than the previous gen well I have the previous gen and this new version is far better than the previous version in everything
