When I started driving in NJ, I was put into a government run pool. A Public Option for auto insurance for new and riskier drivers. Premiums skyrocketed and drove insurance companies out. A new driver was paying up to $4,000 per year, many went without insurance and it still lost $100's of millions. The State got out of the business, new companies came in and premiums went way down. Open up the Health insurance to all 1,300 companies across state lines and let them compete in the open market.

When I started driving in NJ, I was put into a government run pool. A Public Option for auto insurance for new and riskier drivers. Premiums skyrocketed and drove insurance companies out. A new driver was paying up to $4,000 per year, many went without insurance and it still lost $100's of millions. The State got out of the business, new companies came in and premiums went way down. Open up the Health insurance to all 1,300 companies across state lines and let them compete in the open market.

We are required by law to pay for car insurance, and don't really think twice about it. It's relatively affordable and competitive. The pool is so vast that co. have to fight for your business.
A mandate on HC would work much in the same way. A pool of 300 million citizens would make healthcare affordable, along with tort reform.
Take away denying coverage for profit. Take away pre-existing conditions. There is no difference between government or an insurer being between you and your doctor.
