I'd love to here Maria's solo sung with something other than an operatic voice. Don't get me wrong, the performer here is great, but opera singing is very stylized and not always what I'm in the mood for. It doesn't always convey the emotion of the lyrics. It'd be great if there were a broadway rendition of the song or something. They could keep the orchestra music the same, just change the style of singing.

there, the game was first re-released for PS1 in 2000(?), only English, but no problem so far.

FF6 is, in my opinion, Square's one and only masterpiece, best rpg in the world.

As I reached that scene back then, it was absolutely awesome. Although it's just an opera, u can find so much feelings in there.

Browsing amazon.de, I found the Album as MP3-Download with that AWESOME re-interpretation, Mr. Uematsu is a real master concerning music and melodies.

It seems Uematsu-san combined different opera composer styles: Recurring leitmotives and their transformation (which actually appear in all FF games soundtracks) is from Wagner, the actual singing seems bel canto Rossini or Verdi style and the dancing scene is like valse from Eugene (Jevgene) Onegin, yet it still keeps the inimitable Nobuo Uematsu style. Bravo!

@The88LA If you listen to the two, they basically have the same theme. When I went to the symphony to hear this opera in person, the conductor explained that when Nobuo wrote Aeris' theme, he wanted something equally as powerful and emotional, which is why the two are very similar, and both equally successful on their own. Listen to the Opera while trying to imagine the music when the materia drops from Aeris, you'll hear the simliarities clear as day.

@steben59 I would disagree with you about German being better - it is common for operas to be in German because of its hugely rich musical history, but it has a limited vocabulary. English has something in the region of 2 or 3 times the wealth of words. Italian certainly sounds the most beautiful though.

Sigh... I love operas... and I love FF6's steampunk atmosphere. I think I must be a fan of the 19th century (and early 20th century) or something. And I'm quite the romantic too.

About the opera... I love it in any language, really (one japanese version gave me goosebumps) but it's nice to understand the lyrics for once.
