Bob smoked most of his life; always a cigarette in his hand (but back then who really knew how bad it was for you). I know from emailing with Vera Goulet, Bob's loving wife at the time of his passing, that while on a waiting list for a new lung, he succumed to Pulmonary Bibrosis, which as mentioned below can be caused by radiation for treatment of cancer. He had a "beatiful voice" and was so much fun to be around (my family met his when I was in my teens and Nikki was about 7 years old- a doll).
Pulmonary Fibrosis can be caused by radiation treatment for cancer. I wonder how Bob contracted that. A magnificent baritone, one of the all time greats.
Bob was a dear friend, as was his daughter Nicolette, who died of cancer 6 moths after her Dad (more of a broken heart). He use to sing this song to her, & about her as he adored her. Her mother was Louise Longmore Goulet & they both spent many "Happy Times" with us in Westchester Cnty, along with time spent up at Bob's "BIg House" w/his motherJeanette in Pound Ridge, NY. Bob was in our lives all our lives, as was Nikki & we miss them both terribly. Where are you Lu? Love you all, Mimi in NY
@miminme848 Pulmonary fibrosis can be caused by radiation, a treatment for some forms of cancer. Any idea how Bob got this? Been a huge fan since his earliest LP. One of the greatest baritone voices of all time.
I had the pleasure of seeing him in person'here in Australia, some years ago.Apolished performer, with a powerful voice, that he used brilliantly. He used to be in a TV series, and portrayed a Special Agent. He showed clips from the series as a backdrop for his performance. He was one of the greats.!
I've never been a fan of Goulet's. Not that I don't believe he has talent but that talent never appealed to me for one reason or another. However, I think he does a terrific job on Sunrise, Sunset. And perhaps it is just maturity but at the end of the song I think he demonstrates an emotional quality I had not seen in him before.
He sang a song a couple of guys on Howard Stern's show wrote - it was pretty crappy and he took it and made magic out of it. It's such a shame it isn't available to the public. It was nothing less than genious. He was such a great talent. It was called "Restless, Restless." Wonderful song.
I met Robert Goulet outside the Gershwin Theater when he was on tour doing Camelot. He spent about half an hour after the show talking with us and three other people on 50th street outside the stage door. My impression of him was he was a genuine people person, easy to strike up a conversation. A really nice guy who didn't take his fame seriously, but was always kind enough to sign or take a picture for those who asked. I doubt you'll find anyone who worked with him have anything bad to say.
During my 20-odd years as a musical-theatre baritone-actor between the late-1970s and 90s, Robert Goulet was one of the baritone/actors who inspired me. Eventually, I played some of his roles, like Lancelot, Hajj in Kismet, El Gallo in The Fantasticks, Emile in South Pacific. I never met Bob Goulet. But I would have suggested that he keep a full beard or at least a goatee. The mustache alone, in my opinion at least, didn't do him full justice.
Marvelous arrangement to accomodate his limited breathing ability. But the great baritone vocals still comes through! I thought he was the most handsome man on the planet and he will always be a part of my imagination of the Camelot years.
No one will ever top his rendition of "If Ever I Would Leave You". His voice was unique and the best baritone of his generation. Sadly, his daughter Nicolette Goulet died of cancer some months after he died. She was a very attractive soap opera actress in the early1980s. May they both rest in peace.
He was 73 when he died rather suddenly. I recall that he only lasted a month or so after he was diagnosed with a pulmonary desease. What a shame. He was a terrific entertainer with a great voice and good looks.
Wonderful entertainer! He wouldn't live out 2007, and yet... A bit off-key at the beginning of "Sunrise..." Doesn't matter. The orchestra here should be congratulated also: Mr. Goulet changed tempo at the start of "If Ever I Would Leave You," and the musicians managed to keep up with him. Then he slowed down towards the end of the song, and the orchestra never lost a beat.
@Mrironsides It's pretty obvious when you realize he's only doing 2-bar phrases in this performance that's he's struggling with breathing. In his early days, he just had tremendous phrasing and breath control that was astounding!
Correct...he was covering the lack of capacity with such great skill, one doesn't really notice that he is speaking/singing whenever he can. A great man. I look forward to hearing him again.
@Mrironsides He was probably on daily doses of oral and inhalation steroid; this will help the quality of life, and to a lesser degree, some resumption of function; albeit limited.
Such a powerful voice all through the years. Thank goodness for video so we can still touch base with all of our "old favorites"!! Goulet was a great dramatic actor, too and a great comedic actor! One of my alltime favorites!!
Well, at least you're on the tree! He was a wonderful singer and actor, both dramatic and comedic. He was one of the true classics that last down though time, like Sinatra, Jack Jones, Andy Williams, Engelbert, etc. I really enjoyed him through the years.
The world is a sadder place without him. Such a great performer.... I have followed his career over the years and having seen him perform several times, I have always marveled at his talent.....
He kept that voice to the end ... 73 years old, you don't say? ... bravo to his spirit ... two classic Robert Goulet songs ... what more could you ask for? Thank you
Both of these songs are from the '60's and that's when Robert became really popular. I guess they didn't have a '60's pop parade special so they just included him in their '50's special. He sounds fantastic, so sad that he left us all so early.
Robert Goulet was a big star. If he had been born twenty years earlier, he would have been huge, on Broadway and in the movies. He was a great entertainer.
Goulet had plenty of voice here -- wish we could have heard him for many years more, but we can take comfort knowing that he's singing with the angels now:) --
I would like to dedicate Sunrise, Sunset to my friend Ingrid, in Holland. Her beloved cat died and she is very, very sad. He was only 11 months old. I hope it's ok to do this. I love you Ingrid. Amazing, no matter how many times RG sang his signature song, he never ever looked like he was phoning it in. That is a professional. God Bless.

Take note kids - this man is 74 in this clip. Listen to the voice on him. This is singing NOT that emo crap you hear today.
I'm known as a Rock singer and voice coach but this is what singing is all about - power, tonality and emotional command of the song. Perfect.
