thank you for being so MUSICAL and actually playing these amazing instrument - so sick of people just turning knobs and arps-love your posts! In your Prophet series, when the words come on the screen are those the factory patch names. I play organ and would like to buy one of these and know the sounds I am getting and would prfer to tweak as little as poosible and just play - I notice some nice moogish-oberheim sounds - are those presets?
@keybdwizrd Hey Doc. Your Advice, I notice the "sizzleattackld" I believe sounds like a great, groovy moggish patch and with the tweaking- If I want that sound, for solos (analgoue) would you recommend this over the Phatty or even the digital TI - just that pre-set sounded awesome so it seems it can genrate so nice, spacey, groovy leads- can't afford a mini- -also liked your jazz fusion leads- is this the best board for under 2000 for those sounds?
Keybrdwizrd , simpy put you are a legend. A legend in the truest sense of the word. Your skill, knowledge of the instrument, and passion for your art has inspired me to learn playing keys better. How do you still rate the prophet after so long with it? I have just bought a rack mounted edition to provide a better interface and adiitonal voices for my little tetra. There are lots of haters of this synth and it would be interesting to hear how you still rate it
@TheRustyPeppers Thanks for the kind words. In terms of the Prophet, I guess it depends upon how much I want "analog synthesizer type sounds" in my music. For that sort of stuff, the Prophet is great, as is the Moog LP. But as of late I have been much more wrapped up in the sounds of Omnisphere, MOTU Ethno, and the M3, creating more surreal filmscape sort of stuff. I just haven't been into "electronic music," and that's mostly what the analogs represent to me (for right or wrong).
I know you con do splits within a sound, but can u do splits with two completely different pre-sets, and control volume on each zone. If so how many parts can you split- I heard it's :bi-timbre- but within a sound or any tow voices. i am buying this from somone who has no clue so it would be a big help if you know.
@realguy640 As I recall, you can have any two sounds configured any way you want on the keyboard. Keep in mind that the entire instrument has eight note polyphony, so a split gives four notes to each one.
Hey are these different features and effects pre-loaded into the machine? For-instance when u are cutting between takes are you just scrolling down a pre-created list on the Prophet and then tweaking as you like or are you changing the entire control/ button layout (Sorry, I'm new to this) to the settings that you have created and named?
@123blue93 Most of the time I am playing presets that come on the Prophet when you buy it, and I have listed the name of the preset at the bottom of the screen at the beginning of each vignette. The Prophet 08 does not come with any on-board effects (such as reverb or delay), so I am adding these using a Lexicon MX200 effects unit. I fiddle with the effects to find something appropriate for the sound, and then let the camera roll.
Hey KeyWiz. Having watched your 08 demo vids, I really like what I'm hearing in pads and leads.
However, there hasn't been too much exposure of snappy envelopes for funk playing. Given that they're digitally controlled, do they do fine or not-so? I mean, does getting an 08 for its polyphony, multitimbrality and aftertouch mean cutting corners in funk playing in comparison to getting a Moog LP?
Listen to Wally Badarous' Echoes album. Like around 3:03 into Waltz on on that CD, you'll hear the smoothest, richest synth brass sounds ever. and...it's an extremely creative, attractive album...way beyond most of the dirtbags out there...
Owned one...sold it when the Ensoniq ESQ 1 came out...didn't need to...amazing manual..I think it was 8 pages. No midi..and I sold it. Did however, record a bunch of audio with it before selling to remember it by...this was when they were making it...
have to agree...listened to all of the demos,(thanks btw),and though undeniably warm and squidgy sounding, there is a grainy plasticky sheen to nearly every sound I'm hearing..perhaps just the character of the synth, but I think it would frustrate me....
thank you for all of your demos. They have been among the best on the net and greatly appreciated and musical. Does the prophet 8r or MOPHO have any passable theremin type(s) sounds?
Thanks. Gee, I really don't know about theremin type sounds... It seems to me that you should be able to do something like that with an analog synth, but I don't know that I've ever heard anyone try it.
Fantastic. Really nice sounds & a great demo. I'd give my right arm for one of these ........ except I wouldn't be able to play it. Maybe I'll just start saving up. I must have it, me precious!!!!!
hello keybdwizrd, I highly appreciate you demonstrating the prophet 08 for all of us. I will be purchasing my first analog synth this month and I have a few choices. First off, my prefferances are synth pads and chord related sounds, I could care less for monophonic synths. I am deciding between the Prophet 08 and the Roland Jupiter 8 and Roland Jupiter 6. In your opinion for someone who is looking for an almost all pad analog polyphonic synth, whats my best choice?
Well, if I won the lottery, and wasn't planning on gigging with it, I imagine I'd buy a Jupiter 8, although I haven't actually played one in many years. And it would have to be in pristine condition and have the MIDI retrofit, which means it would cost a fortune. So not having the coin or desire to spend that much $ on a single keyboard, and not having any experience with the Jupiter 6, the P'08 is a great value with all modern features. And it sounds great IMHO.
Thank You Keybdwizrd for all of these postings, great playing too! I have a question for you when ever you have the time. I am investing in a few synths and am already sold on the Poly Evolver and would having a Prophet 08 be wasting money or overlapping too much? Also I am looking for soft gentle synth sounds in hardware a synth and the Dave Smith Series seems really chunky and I am looking for some atmospheric soft sounds. Some styles would be steve roach and robert rich. Any advice ?
Sorry, I am not familiar with Poly Evolver but probably some overlap. Plenty of gentle synth sounds in Prophet 08 especially if you have an external reverb/delay unit. Otherwise Virus TI is good option, or look at "rompler" keyboards from Yamaha, Korg, Roland.
Sweet, thanks for this info. I am trying to research as much as possible so I don't end up with one of each and get nothing done. Thanx for all your replies. Kindly-__-
analogue synth like that or oberheim are so smooth it's impossible to have the same detune and sound progression on a modulation software synth, the sound is so juicy.
1:00 serious Oberheim sound

@Nillerbabsen I think the P08 is capable of some fine sounds for funk playing. I guess I omitted that style while improvising. :)
