I'm very confused because I here that degus can chew through wood very easily, but the whole cage is made of wood. Can someone please explain this to me? I think I might get a couple soon (2 or 3) and I really like the way the wood cages look and feel natural, whereas a metal cage almost makes them look "trapped" in a way. All I would want is whats best for the degus and having them not escape by chewing through the wood.
i know this sounds really stupid but could you use an old wardrobe as the cage? (of course taking off the doors and putting on glass sliders or something like that) or would they be able to escape by gnawing through it?
This videos awesome, you've really helped me provide further enrichment for my Degus. Can I ask where you got the branches in the Degu cage from? I'm looking everywhere for some branches for them climb up and chew on but nowhere sells anything. Any websites you know of that i could buy these from? Thankyou :)

I am so glad I decided to look up info on youtube about Degus. You really did give me some ideas. I think come spring time I will build a nice cage for my degu and see about getting him a friend. I'm pretty sure the cage is easy to build and doesn't take much experience.
@NightwishRaven999 I did go to your site and I like the info that you give. You seem to know a lot about Degus and I would like to keep my Degu happy. I do have a question though. My Degu woke me up the other nice at 530 AM by squeaking and running on his wheel for no reason. I thought giving him celery would make him stop but it turns out all he wanted was attention. That normal behavior for him? He should be sleeping XD.
@slugger12 please please get some more degus , anyone that sells you one degu should be shot , they live in 100's in the wild and need company! degus who live on they own live much shorter lifes because they become depressed and just die! Be very careful introducing more cus they can be very nasty and rip eachother apart when not used to eachother! google degu topia it will tell you all you need to know

How do you keep the wood from smelling like urine? All of the wooden toys I’ve put in my boys cage end up stinking after a month and I have to toss them. Thanks.

Hi. I made the mistake of getting to small of a cage that cost too much for my Degus. I have only had them for a week but we are really wanting to make the same exact 1st cage you built. hey im actually making a cage right now and ive only got one wall done and im using pine and i was wondering if its safe but its not kiln dried..i dont know if its the same with chinchillas or not (i used chinchillas cuz i have them)
I have to admit that is an awesome setup (even though it's your old model, but your new cage too)
I'll probably get degus later down the road when I get my own place, because they need more room, and have a more specific diet, and require more attention, and I think they cost more.
I'm going to settle for gerbils for the time being lol.
Still that's a sick setup that I'd like to have someday.
Did you use any finishes on the wood inside the cage and why dont they naw it? And what size would you suggest for only 2 degus I have the maximum of Length 25inch Width 14inch and Height 34inch So I mean levels etc.
No, the wood should not be stained, varnished or finished in any way.
They dont gnaw on the wood because they are not able to. Degus cannot bite a flat surface...hence, a well built cage presents no opportunity for the degus to chew on it.
I will pm you about the recommended cage size and details a bit later on.
I used Pine wood for the levels in the cage. If this is too expensive in your area, you can also use ply wood. But whatever you do, do not use partical wood since it is heavily loaded with glue.
Hope this helps.
If you have any questions, feel free to pm me. Take care : )
Building a degu cage is very fun and very rewarding. However, my degu girls are not living in this cage anymore. In my more recent videos you can see the new, bigger cage I have built for them.
Over all like do degus eat a lot? Caz i was just wondering if u spend a lot of money on them like on the food for them and that kind of thing. So u even use nails for the bigger levels or do u just use bigger nails?
yeah, I was thinking of pine as a food for degus - it's toxic because of essential oils. I am glad to hear that you know that. Yhh, in Poland is a group of people who gives pinophyta for degus and another rodents ;/
I am not sure exactly how much two large sheets of glass would cost in the UK.
But in Canada, they can cost between 50-75 $...Glass, or even Plexi-glass can be used. And although this may be expensive, building a cage like this is still considerably cheaper than buying a much smaller rodent cage from a pet store. Mesh is cheaper than glass or plexy glass, but doesnt have the same pros and cons. I would go for glass or plexi glass any day though : )
Why did you choose to have glass doors? As I'm not sure whether to use glass for the door or to make a mesh door. What do you think is the best option?
I chose glass doors, because the cage is in a very well ventilated section of the house. Glass can also be cleaned easily, gives a clear view of the entire cage and most importantly, keeps the bedding inside the cage and not out.
Glass is more expensive than mesh but also has several advantages.
Both are good materials, but if you use glass doors, be sure that the cage is not completly sealed off.
hi im wondering weather or not to have a degu my mum said mayby but i want one but first she wants to know how old to they live for and what type of food they eat?
This video is very informative. Thank you so much for doing this. Can you tell me, how long do they live. What do you feed them. Do you have other pets around them, dogs or cats...? Do they need shots like our cats & dogs do...?
Young degus have a habit to nibble on fingers, but they lose this after a while.
Degus are not alone to be chewers. All rodents need to chew in order to wear down their teeth. Why degus do not bite...I dont know. You should not let your degus out around the house. Not every room in a house is degu proof. You should find a room (washroom is ideal) in which you can put your degus in for daily excercise.
Degus are very curious and eager to explore new spaces.
They cant chew a flat surface or the inside of a corner. Degus will only look for ways to go out of the cage if they feel it is to small. They concentrate their chewing on their toys and wood logs. Poo and pee doesnt get to the wood. The bottom of the cage is covered with 6-7" of bedding. I too have experience with other rodents including guinea pigs, but degus are nothing like them. They urinate very little and defecate small dry poos. Pine wood is also resistent to liquids.
No. Its just fun to see in the cage when the room is dark. Those are heat lamps and should only be placed in rooms with an air conditioner. Degus, much like chinchillas, have low tolerance of high temperatures. They love heat lamps, but temperatures of 25C can become dangerous to them. Only use these in cool rooms.
Wood is the best way to build a degu cage. They cannot bite through it since they cant bite a flat surface. Pee and poo doesnt get to the wood. Note that all of the levels are covered with inches of bedding.
so im not very handy with building, and i wondered if there is another way to do the doors, to make them prolly like, smaller like do u think it would be possible to like, divide the doors into maybe two sets? how could i go about that? im thinking two whole levels one ech with the sliders then i could just do little triangle levels like u have if i want to add on.. right?
don't they try to bite there way through the wood?
I'm planning on building a cage like this but i'm worried about making it in wood cause everyone says they'll bite there way through in no time.. do they actually bite the walls of yours?
They cannot bite a flat surface...there is no open angle that permits them to bite the cage. Secondly, when you have a big cage, the degus dont often concentrate on leaving. Providing them with lots of wood and toys, helps much to aleviate their chewing habits. So a cage like this, is very safe.
This is a great idea! When we started looking for new pets & finally decided on the Degu's, your other video's inspired me to get one. We custom built their cage too, but you did an amazing job. Its great to see someone else that loves their pets so much.
Wow. Once again, nice video. I went to my local pet store today to look at some fish (and tanks) cos of course you know from the PM's. I went to look at stuff and I saw like 6 Degus. They were so cool I wanted to get one I just done have a cage and enough info for them. :P C ya later man.
Very nice cage, lots of room inside it. It makes the Goo's look tiny. I have a large metal cage that was specially built and yes, it was expensive. Your cage also looks aesthetically pleasing, well done, great job! ^-^
It is, and its also practical, since it holds all the mess inside the cage, and keeps the surrounding areas clean.
The cage is big enough, so that you can add lots of stuff without taking up the space they need to run and climb. You can see right through it and have easy access to all the cage.
hi again, i bought a new degu and i think they are fighting what should i do?

Is there any particular reason you chose to use the kiln pine instead of just all MDF like with the platforms?
Twinklesthecamppanda 11 months ago
@Twinklesthecamppanda
Kiln dried pine is safe for the degus to chew on.
MDF is loaded with glue and can prove detrimental to a degu's health if chewed on regularly.
Its fine to build a cage and levels with MDF or Plywood...as long as all the levels and ledges are bordered by wood that is safe for degus to chew on.

I no longer use this cage for my degus, but the measurements were around
110x60x160 cm (Length x Width x Height)
In my newer videos, you can see the new cage my degus live in.
It measures 130x55x220 cm.
If you plan on building a cage for degus, keep in mind that two adults will need atleast 100x50x100 cm of space.
Hope this helps...

Hum, no they are Degus.
They are not even related to rats.
Degus are related to Chinchillas.
In character, they are very much like squirels. They are very smart, curious and affectionate.
Degus are very special creatures.
They are not at all like rats, hamsters or other rodents.
NightwishRaven999 2 years ago

3g00fy4 2 years ago
No, degus do not eat more than other rodents...the problem is finding foods that are good for your degus, since they cannot ingest sugar.
The levels are all fairly light and they are all supported with thick screws...in the video I said nails, but I got mixed up.
Nails can bend too easily, screws are much more solid.
To find out about what they eat, look for a video called " Degu Diet"

pine IS toxic
Mezzea 2 years ago
Pine is certainly not toxic.
It is not good for degus to chew on, but it is the best material to build a cage since it is cheap and easy to clean.
If you build your cage properly, the degus should not be able to chew on the wood anyways.

Not every room in a house is degu proof. You should find a room (washroom is ideal) in which you can put your degus in for daily excercise.
Degus are very curious and eager to explore new spaces.
I am glad you are asking questions.

Watch my cage cleaning video.
It will answer most of your questions : )

Hi, I was wondering if you could do a step by step guide of what to cut out in wood etc. If you could that would be great! :P
Thanks. :)

hey, I was wondering where you got the plastic sliders from.
I can't find them on the internet
cool idea by the way. i'm gonna build a cage like this one to
how big is it??
MrRubendeRuiter 2 years ago
I find them easily at a hardware store.
You will probably see a tall rack with many of these, some of different sizes.
Its not worth shopping on the net for these things. They are cheap as anything.
NightwishRaven999 2 years ago
Thats sounds like a good project ; )
Ideally the cage should be atleast 100x50x100 cm in dimensions.
At the moment my cage is 110x65x160 cm. The size of your cage may change after a while, since you will probably feel like building an extension : P
Oh and the cage should have atleast one large level. Be sure the glass doors are not to close to the floor.
There should be atleast a 15cm strip of wood under the doors...or you will find the bedding spilling out everytime you open them.

thanks:p

so im not very handy with building, and i wondered if there is another way to do the doors, to make them prolly like, smaller like do u think it would be possible to like, divide the doors into maybe two sets? how could i go about that? im thinking two whole levels one ech with the sliders then i could just do little triangle levels like u have if i want to add on.. right?

don't they try to bite there way through the wood?
I'm planning on building a cage like this but i'm worried about making it in wood cause everyone says they'll bite there way through in no time.. do they actually bite the walls of yours?
thx
AterMentis 2 years ago
Hi : ) Well to answer your question.
No, the degus dont try to bit their way out.
They cannot bite a flat surface...there is no open angle that permits them to bite the cage. Secondly, when you have a big cage, the degus dont often concentrate on leaving. Providing them with lots of wood and toys, helps much to aleviate their chewing habits. So a cage like this, is very safe.

I am mentioning in the video how cheap it is as opposed to buying a large cage commercialy sold at pet shops.
NightwishRaven999 2 years ago
This is a great idea! When we started looking for new pets & finally decided on the Degu's, your other video's inspired me to get one. We custom built their cage too, but you did an amazing job. Its great to see someone else that loves their pets so much.

Wow. Once again, nice video. I went to my local pet store today to look at some fish (and tanks) cos of course you know from the PM's. I went to look at stuff and I saw like 6 Degus. They were so cool I wanted to get one I just done have a cage and enough info for them. :P C ya later man.
Seahawk7356 2 years ago
lol...thats basicly how I fell in love with degus. I seen 6 of them and was astonished.

Thanks for the comment !

Also forgot to mention that one big advantage of such a degu cage, is that bedding stays inside.
Keeping the area around the cage, clean and mess-free.

Sorry for the stuttering...I am not used to making such videos.
I often found myself looking for words...and no, my voice does not sound the same.
The cheap digital camera I use, makes me sound like I have a bad cold : P
If you have any more questions about making a degu cage, dont be afraid to ask.
I will be glad to help.
Enjoy.
To those who asked me such questions in a pm; hope this answers more clearly.
