no they took it from the movies let's not forget that the tune TNG used was made by Jerry goldsmith from the firsrt ST film which was madse in 1979 if I recall wghich would have meant the game is more likely to have borrowed it from Star trek
@BlueThunder83 .....mind comparing john williams' theme with jerry goldsmiths? if you still think this sounds like star wars, then you need a hearing aid, my friend.
Jerry Goldsmith composed this theme in 1978-79 for 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture'. It was later used for Star Trek TNG (as opposed to re-using the old-school theme which wouldn't fly even in '87) This game must have ripped it off in '81.....unless it's a Star trek game but not likely.
As has been stated there's no question Star Trek The Next Generation used the music second - but not to the game... Would be a great story if it had though :)
Theme music composed by Jerry Goldsmith for the 1979 sci-fi film Star Trek: The Motion Picture, later utilized for Star Trek: The Next Generation, is borrowed as Vanguard's introductory theme.
no this did not steal it from tng, number 1 the song was first heard in star trek the mtion picture 1979, #2 because of that i highly doubt this game was made then so maybe the game stole it from the motion picture eh?
Come on guys, everybody's saying tng stole tos's music. Tng didn't steal anything. THe guys at Paramount just wanted to put the song in the show. No one stole anything.
wait if this game is from the 80's, TNG did not rip off of it because the TNG theme is a different arrangement of the same theme used in the 1979 movie Star Trek the Motion Picture.
Like I said, the NextGen theme music is a reworked version of the Jerry Goldsmith-composed "Motion Picture" theme and did, however, included the fanfare portion of the Alexander Courage-composed "Original Series" theme.
You sir are wrong. It was originally composed by for Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979, predating this by two years. It is far more likely this game copied TMP.
yes, but the Power Up Energy bar Theme was from Flash Gordon movie. Reference the Hawkmen scene when Flash was riding the Sky-Cycle (Masters of the Universe ripped off the Idea amd made the Sky-Sled for He-Man)
I'm not sure where you heard this tid-bit of information, but Queen did NOT write nor perform the music for the game Vangard. They did, however have their own computer game called The Eye that had a lot of their music in it.
Throughout the 1979 Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the theme had many variations. I always thought the best one was during Kirk's flyby past the upgraded Enterprise. It's played slightly slower and I think it is by far the best rendition. I found the soundtrack album in the early 80's and played that track to death. When TNG used it as the titles in the late 80's, I was sick of it by then. :)
I have to agree that Star Trek: The Motion Picture was the first. The theme is known for its relationship with Star Trek. The game probably borrowed it.
You know that the TNG theme music is actually the theme from 1979's "Star Trek: The Motion Picture". That Vanguard game was released two years after "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" was released.
Thats because the band Queen did the music for Flash Gordon AND they did the music for this game. Yes, the music for the video game Vanguard was composed by the band Queen.
Vanguard ripped off both Star Trek and Flash Gordon (Attack of the Hawkmen music), but it fit perfectly. I love Vanguard!

more likely the game makers stole goldsmiths theme for their game, probably to pay homage to star trek with their sci fi game.

finalfrontier1701 1 year ago 2
YES it seems that there has been a "borrowing" of some kind, but not in the exact order you mentioned.........
Star Trek TNG's theme was written by Jerry Goldsmith 1978. That crappy game is probably not even a ST related, just a pure theft.
armagodon300 2 years ago 5
the problem is that TNG's theme song was in fact the main theme of Star Trek: TMP which was made in 1979

Yes, they borrowed the music. But they gave it back after the series was canceled. Hence the borrowing.

I used to play this game a lot. I remember it sounding a lot like TMP's theme, but not this much. Is this a game console version or something?
jtkirkfan2002 2 years ago 2
The game does not only steal the music from Start Trek:TMP but also the 1980 Flash Gordon film (when you pick up the energy)
porcorosso81 2 years ago 4
Yeah, it's Vice versa man. Star Trek the Motion Picture came out in 1979, the game stole the music, but you're right they are the same.

Star Trek TMP was made before this game, and it contained this theme. They used this by permission most likely.
Msyticair 2 years ago 3
@Msyticair It's more likely that SKN told Paramount NOTHING and they blatantly ripped it off like a page from your average phonebook.

The theme used on TNG first appeared in Star Trke: The Motion Picture, released in 1979. This game ripped off that, if anything.

Yes, I think Paramount did lift the music from this game.
I also think the song "Funkytown" has videogame roots: "Fantasy" (Rock-ola, 1981).

amiga2000 5 years ago
We don't need URLs. Go rent Star Trek: The Motion Picture, released in 1979, and then tell us that TNG "ripped off" this 1981 game.
CNash85 5 years ago
This is HORRIBLE! I'll never recover.
sshuck 5 years ago
Actually, amiga2000, I did a little research, so the answer is probably "no".
Jerry Goldsmith's famous theme song we know and love from ST:TNG was first used for Star Trek: The Motion Picture, which came out in 1979.
(I also revised the Wikipedia article to reflect this.)

"Music from Star Trek is used as an introductory theme"
FROM: Vanguard (arcade game)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, (12/6/06).
Who copied who now...? lets get it right... Star Trek was First! Thx.
xXAlmightyBobXx 5 years ago
Maybe they both "borrowed" it from Jerry Goldsmith, the man who composed the theme for Star Trek TNG in 1987.
perfectlydefective 5 years ago 2
You know that the TNG theme music is actually the theme from 1979's "Star Trek: The Motion Picture". That Vanguard game was released two years after "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" was released.

Ah! Gotta love someone who knows more about Star Trek than I do. Thanks for the info :)
