So agree with you about a clean workshop being an inspiration! I try to always clean my wheel and rinse my sponges - wash off my desk as often as possible. Working on doing my glazing in the room next door.
I have a tile floor, so very easy to wash off, though it never gets perfectly clean. I wish I could take over hubby's workshop in the garage - it has a drain! I could RINSE the floor!
Oh - and clean tools - so you don't get dry bits in wet clay - that's SUCH a pain!
I am comforted in knowing that my studio is not the only one that needs a good scrubbing. I am also a horizontal filer. I know where it is, even if it does take me a little while to find it under all the other stuff.
My studio is on the upper floor of my house where there is old but useable carpet on the floor. I found a large mat that used under an office desk chair. The wheel is facing a corner of the room so I covered the walls with plastic. When things get too muddy I take the mat outside and wash it down with a water hose and wipe the plastic down with a sponge.
I was warned about Manganese Oxide. Which is a inhalation hazard, particularly when mixing in a glaze (or alone with water) or any glaze that is sprayed on a piece. I know there are other glaze components that are hazardous, but experienced potters always made a point of reminding me about it's toxicity
Manganese oxide is also bad in kiln gasses, as are many things. Symptoms can be like Parkinson's disease. I don't use manganese, mostly because I've never had the need too.
I don't vent it. I just wipe thing down. Sometimes I have a window open, but in winter it's shut up tight. It really isn't that dusty at all, especially if I keep things clean.

I am blessed with a cleaning lady. I sponge off most surfaces as needed and she cleans the floor once or even twice a week.
Thanks for the reminder, though. It is so important to keep a clean studio!

How do you vent all the dust from your studio? from what i know it's your basement and i dont really see how you can ventilate it too well.
