I feel that he is deliberately lying on the role the Israel lobby plays in the grand scheme of things and that he provides cover for Israel by being against the right of return and boycotts. Furthermore he places the blame for the CIA on the executive only, providing cover for the rogue intel agencies. When chomskybots are presented with this evidence that contradicts what chomsky says on the lobby or the cia they generally go nuts on the person who had the gall to bring it up
6:28 dude these institutions aren't run by robots or aliens from another planet, they're run by people. Do you really think that the heads of these companies believe what Chosmky says they do about global warming or 'climate change' (why is it called that?) being the end of the species? I doubt it. They'd have to at least be in denial or something in order to keep going w/it. I mean what does he cite when he says 'they know it', nothing.
@dubified89 Are you serious? Is that your argument? You must have a bloody good idea about your self, dude! How long have you ponder about your last statement? I would risk that Prof Chomsky spent longer thinking about the facts he states than you spent watching Family Guy or some other idiotic crap manufactured by Fox. Your argument resumes to "why is it called that"? Tell you what: Seat down, relax, light up and learn, listen to one of the most moral, coherent but realistic philosophers alive
@dubified89 Of course it's just people who run it. It is us, our pensions, superannuation funds and our trust funds that do it. But the point is we don't know or can't afford to care. All we do is invest and expect a return. Meanwhile, companies do what they have to do. - make a profit. The directors get the golden boot if they fail. The environment is only what we see in front of us. Companies are us and we can't see more past our own refrigerators, so I don't think we will save the earth.
a market system works because neither individuals nor organizations can profit by selling garbage to the market in the long run. does a market system guarantee that any product, financial or otherwise, is objectively beneficial to customers? of course not. but a free enterprise system is so superior to the centrally planned alternative that to even question it in the light of the incalculable blessing it has brought to recently liberated markets (India, China, etc) is an intellectual crime.
@jwkirkjr alot of stuff he says is kind of shady. while global warming is real- the ploy to use carbon credits and the data used to "prove" global warming is real was all a elaborate propaganda campaign to line the pockets of the line. I dont understand why chomsky did not point that out if he was already touching on the subject. Again, i think we ARE causing harm to the environment BUT carbon credits is not a good solution, it is the elites way to make money from our fears and anxiety to fix it
June the average sea ice extent in the Arctic was the lowest on record. It´s tracked since 1979 (with sattelites) with a DRAMATIC DECLINE over the last 30 years. Thicker ice now only makes up 10%! That's down from 30% to 40% in the 1980s and 1990s.
In fact, 2008 and 2009 were second and third in terms of ice loss.
#Greenland is losing ice mass and the rate is accelerating.
#Antarctica is losing ice mass and the rate is accelerating.
Chomsky is great at what he does. He cuts through all of the bullshit very well. He's quite right in his observations on how easily the US public can be swayed on sensitive topics with a good old fashioned PR campaign. He's also quite right that corporation heads, though human, exist merely to do the job for their corporation. If that means choking the seas and skies, then so be it. Governments have done no way near enough to do anything and it makes you realise just who is in charge.
A missing part of the Goldman Sachs (GS) story may underscore Chomsky's second point about 'perverse incentives' rather than 'market inefficiency.' AIG's bust put GS in serious trouble too, and GS survived because funds from the govt bailout of AIG were funneled to GS to compensate against its own 'no good' securities (fraud?). Could GS have known it had a friend in Hank P. and a 'government insurance policy' to back it? If so, then we have 'perverse incentives.'
Arundhati roy is a bitch and wannabe Chomsky with much lesser intellectual capacity. The bitch , with her multimillionaire husband had built a big ass house on protected land. She doesn't have any qualms when breaking the law herself. Chomsky is in different league altogether.
i think one of the most important issues chomsky likes to tackel if only on a sidenote is the complete failure of the western/US intellectual elite to articulate and act responsibly so we can avoid further economic and ecologic cataclysms.
if institutions of intelligence (press, corporations, government, inactive intellectuals etc.) partcipate in "double-think" actual change is virtually impossible.
Noam makes sense an a lot of things but, The science does not support AGW thats why it has lost its credibilty. The following are reasons by real scientists that it is so.
Climate Change - Bob Carters 5 Tests of Co2 part
David Archibald - Global Warming & Sunspots explained
David Evans - Why CO2 cannot be blamed for Global warming
Global Warming Swindle Debate Pt1
Al Gore Debates Global Warming
As well the imperialism he describes is just humans, its just how we have evolved.
In comparison to Chomsky's classic lectures/talks, his recent ones are concise and a lot less pedantic. Did he make the transition consciously, so that he could reach to a more broader audience, beyond the intelligentsia circle?
Strictly speaking Chomsky's comments from 4:50 - 5:20 are probably not accurate. The so-called Climategate controversy began on 11/17/09 and therefore could not have contributed to the sharp decline in public belief in anthropogenic global warming which showed up in the Pew poll data more than 1 month earlier on 10/04/09. Public opinion shifted for some other reason, possibly due to actual data about sea ice and temperature in which case opinion will shift back again as climate change continues.
i think what he means is that climategate is just an example and part of the general process of propagandizing of the population on climate change by industry
i think it's also that the camera is far off, not close up, and the lighting as well (from those flourescent lighting used in all school settings haha)
