I've never heard of anyone that prefers digital downloads over the physical game. I love World of Goo for example, but I don't feel like I own the game really. When I consider what games I own in my collection I don't think of World of Goo, because technically I don't own anything, I can't hold it in my hand.
I think while digital download only games appeal to some people, it surely can't be a large group. People aren't stupid.
@Sajun88 I agree dude, I think that digital games that are successful should be given the chance to exist on a disc so that we can all enjoy them as well. Plus it gives the indy devs more money and an opportunity to reach a larger audience :)
I'd totally give up the current generation of gaming if it ever went digital only, if i pay money for a game, i better own it. Although I'm a keen fan of boxed retro and handheld stuff, I could never do the same with my PC games. I have over 250 games on Steam and wouldn't have it any other way.

@Snestastic Online passes are not too bad as you can rebuy them for a small amount of money. Many PC games have a code or cd-key that activates on Steam or Origin. @DarkSphinxx Too true the way they are headed it will happen. That's why we need to do what we can to have our voices heard. Keep both options so we can choose how to consume our entertainment :)
Expect a video from my end, as I agree. Digital downloads definately have an upside (Case in point, Good Ol' Games) but really? Do we need a digital future overall? There's more reasons than just a game's old age as to why we're retro after all. Well, for me anyhow.
@manunitedfan15 I have always said dude if sony, microsoft or nintendo went pure digital then I would not buy their console and would stop playing current gen games. I think Sony learnt their lesson with the PSPGO and Kaz Hirai has stated recently that he doesn't think digital is possible for a while due to bad internet connections not being able to handle the data.
It looks a crap future if things go 100% digital, no more collecting, no more resale value at all which I thinks one of the worst things, how much have we spent on gaming over the years? Hopefully I'd never have to sell up but if I had to at least I could, if things were digital then I'd have no resale value at all, I cant understand how any cnosumer could possibly stand up for it.
@craigsheree Agreed Craig, I think as long as we can have both options the future will be bright. However we all understand that eventually the entertainment industry would prefer to go 100% digital and I understand their reasons but there are so many reasons not too do it.
@Gamesta100 Me too dude, i've said it before if a generation of consoles comes out where you can't buy a disc or cart then I won't buy new systems anymore. We all have plenty of retro systems too keep us happy :)
i too, shall give the finger to digital distribution. response on its way
haha. i understand that technology is advancing but i hope that we can still have the option to have our games/movies/music/ etc physically. I pay to be able to physically have and play those things. i mean, good for those people who like the thought of digital distribution but c'mon, really? ugh great video man!
@itrytohelpp Thanks dude and thanks for the response as well :) I agree we need to have both options. It seems that the entertainment industry no longer want to pay attention to their consumers and just want too tell us how it's going too be. The best way is for us too vote with our wallets. I think Sony learnt their lesson when they released the PSPGO :)
i too, shall give the finger to digital distribution. response on its way

Backup is not a problem for me as Steam and 360 offer cloud storage for saves, ability to re download your content as its tied to your account. The real problem is if a console can truly be competitive in digital content as its one service and as such you are forced to pay the going prices, at least with a pc you have a choice of distribution services or the option to buy a serial code or the actual disk to get a product key so the competition for prices is apparent.
@KieranD212 That's fine for the moment but no-one knows what the future holds and if those cloud services are gone in the future so are your backed up files.
@Snestastic Its more a problem for console users as pc users can copy data to as many devices as they like even backup to a disk ironically, its just like you say the service goes down then you can't log in and although steam has an offline mode so you dont need to log in once your key has been activated you do need to log in that once to activate a key.
pc games im forced to register my product key to play, even if i buy a disk, we will see in 10 years if the system works or not.
Its just about people who like to see stuff on a shelf, personally i like that with the retro but not for current. Delivery method means fuck all to me its all the same data. If its cheapest to buy the disk for the serial code i buy that if its cheaper to use a distribution service like Steam it ill use that. Most PC games are tied to steam as requiring you register the product key for use which is fine because then i have an online backup and all the features that come with steam like friends.
@KieranD212 It's not just that for me Kieran, I think about with games if 10, 20 years down the line there is no playstation or xbox all those games we have spent out money on are stored on our hard drives. If the console and hard drive die we lose everything and because sony and ms are no longer in the game we can't re-download the games. As far as streaming go's, the broadband in the UK needs a massive boost before that will work properly.
i love collecting games tv shows movie's anime! the anime industry is really hurting over this digital and piracy shit i'm a collector of this and i don't want to see it all go digital! so FUCK YOU DD! let us choose what the fuck we want! and having both is great but a collector will alway's love that brand new bought from the store physical copy!
@antrite08 Agreed we need to have both options, I like to have a physical copy so that I can play the game or watch the movie anywhere anytime. If we have too rely on a streaming service the broadband isn't good enough yet, I don't want too watch a movie and have it keep buffering. Plus will they provide extras on a movie like we get with our dvd's and blu rays?
@svr73 Thanks dude, there's nothing like playing on the original hardware for me as well. The only emulator I can say is worthwhile is MAME because we can't afford to have a room full of arcade cabs lol.
I would prefer a hybrid approach (physical and digital), but I have no problem if all the games were digital as long as they're DRM-free or a service I'm comfortable with already (like Steam).
I am all for digital content available online BUT I am not going to support 100% online distrobution at all ever. For games, I want the psychical copy. But for movies and music I would prefer to have both psychical and digital copies. I never really want to download something only since you can't sell it and I feel that I could be wasting money on something that you could get for free (that depends on the content).
@marioandsonic1986 Agreed Josh, I like the triple pack blu rays for instance, the option to be able to watch the movie on a dvd/blu ray player but then too also be able to transfer a digital copy to a portable device. That's an intelligent approach I think.
I agree completely man, but only cuz hard drives crash and putting everything on a site that will eventually close or loose your data ontop of the fact HDD failure will make you loose data definitely... I'd rather have a physical copy to use practically forever.
@TheNews1990 That's exactly how I feel too, people put too much faith in technology and the cloud etc. Who know's what the future holds, if we have a physical copy then we never lose it :)
@adfot1 Thanks Adam, any chance of a response? :) I remember retrogamerdaz making a vid when he got his pspgo and it was a pspgo collection vid which really made the point, it was a cupboard with nothing in it lol
I'm kinda mixed on this one. I'd say both physical copies and digital distribution have their benefits and negatives. Digital distribution is very convenient and space saving, but there is no guarantee that if something happens to the file that you can redownload it. On the other hand physical copies could go bad too, and there is not an unlimited amount of space to store them, but you can resell them. I'm not completely against digital distribution, but it has some kinks to work out.
@cbrooks83 Me neither dude, I want to have the option to choose how I watch, listen or play my entertainment. I don't want too be told you now HAVE to download everything which is where I think the industry is trying too push us for the future. We need to be given the option of both physical and digital :)
I think you should put the 3rd screen cap as the picture for the video! That would truly say it all. Great video and good to see the responses. All the best!
i agree i prefer having the disc but i would be happy for there to be both I do think there are some great games on xbl and psn store that otherwise would not of been made because of the immense amount of money required to make an hd game. I have no desire to sit and watch a download bar waiting for a 10 gb plus file to download because frankly that's boring as shit
@MadDingo800 Agreed Rob, I wish they would put those games on discs for us too buy as well as download. I want the really good indy games and the HD re-makes like Turtles Re-shelled to buy on a disc.
@Snestastic MS do sometimes bring out compilation games like live unplugged but its always the summer of arcade games I do own a few of them if and when the new xbox comes out content better be transferable.
I prefer physical copys because I thought to go digital and when my laptop hardrive went caput I list tge only videos of my mom . Thats why you sould always have a physical copy if only had one I would have a video of my mom. And also games atari carts look how old they are and they still work . In the future downloads etc want be like that there easy to corupt .same with books we still got books in museums from 1600 you want have the sane for dugital in the future sorry if it makes no sence .
@timeteam1982 Agreed dude and you can't back up your ps3 digital games or xbox as far as i'm aware because of fear of piracy. Or you can but only a couple of times.
@Snestastic also its nice to have something to hold . When its downloaded its like its still the companys . Same when I bought series 2 of,red dwarf on itunes when I came to redowload it on my new pc I had to re buy it .
i like the digital distribution of comics as theyre about half the price and let u take them on the move but yeah, digital games deserve a kick in the C**T
@emojo1990 As long as you can have both that's what's important, I still think a digital copy of a newspaper, book, comic is wrong tbh, there's nothing better than holding a book, comic in your hands :)
@Snestastic yea, its good to have a choice, not something decided for you, expecially a choice that ruins your experience, this is america, we are free to chose!
Agree mate - I love to look at my games collection, my books, greaphic novels, dvds etc sitting on the shelf. If you get things digitally, it doesn't feel like you actually own it somehow.
@theretrogamesnews Thanks Phil, exactly, it's nice to be able to look through everything and enjoy the cover art, the manuals etc. Digital is horrible :)
@Awesom3Pand4 I think they should be put onto disc as well dude, it would be nice for people like myself who won't buy the digital version to have the option to own the games on a disc or a compilation disc of several arcade/indy titles :)
oh last point lol, there is good sonic generations is £9.99 on steam and most of it goes to sega and thats new, but! a problem is we keep being told 2nd hand games is piracy, as no money goes to developers and it's a lost sale and its theft, if you keep handing out shit games, crap manuals or no discs, ppl will boycott you and download it people will do it for mass effect 3 using origin, see how many ppl pirate that now because of it!, great vid pete :):), maybe i should have done this from a pm
ill be honest i have a pc that can wipe the floor with consoles but i went to consoles for the moment, as i hate the digital trend, i have like 50 pc games and 3 of them are in my room, and that was enough for me to get a 360, 99% of gamers dnt want it, look at crysis on 360 1st 1, download only i love that game would have bought it but not now, why pay for some little code, which took like 1minute to manufacture, its a sad state, man im going off on one lol
Totally agree pal, completely digital would be a disaster and from a collectors point of view or just gamer in general who likes a physical copy of a game too cherish it would just ruin everything. I do get the odd game on steam but would never buy digital products as a primary thing because i refuse too pay 29.99 for a game without getting a disc etc. I personally dont think it will happen completely but i do think they will be some clown that will try and push it. Totally with you. LIKE. :)
@darrenj100882 Thanks Darren, same here, a couple of quid is one thing but I'm not willing to pay £30-£40 for a digital game that's just ridiculous. Please feel free to post a video response :)
steam will be around for a long time, but onlive will fail, also you have no rights to return via digital distribution, steam is a provider of content, a marketplace and doesnt generally deal in technical problems, games such as fallout 3 buggy, on steam ur allowed 1 refund/chance and that's really it, you buy it it's yours, legally its bad too, and you have no means to do what you want with the content, it's very restrictive, do game companies listen to consumers though look at ea :(
i 100% agree onlive you don't own the titles despite paying full price for them, you own the right to play them whilst it's in service and like say downloadable indie titles on xbla what happens if it goes down the pan, ur totally right unlike a console you won't be able to play the games at all, microsoft actually say we don't "own" the games even if we buy them on a disc :S its all sorta like whats gona happen and none of us know, but discs provide some security, i personally think that
@johnwilliamson47 Exactly John, that's why I never buy digital games no matter how good they are. You sometimes get an indy game released on disc but only if they are very successful on the digital xbla service 1st. They should just do both anyway so that everyone can have access to the games.
oh i know im going off on 1, but theres a lot of arguments to both, anyone who says digital isnt coming is an idiot! on pc the disc boxed games in the usa is dead, and dying in the uk, on steam you get games on release for say 29.99 then down the line in sales eg dead space 1 and 2 for 6.49, and it's doing very well, and it will happen, but i rather it didnt' as i like to own my stuff, digital in 5 years onlive in 10. sad to say :(, theres always retro!, and £2350,000 snes carts then lol.
@johnwilliamson47 Of course we can't fight the inevitable but we can make our voices heard. I always worry about the future and if say in gaming the hard drive dies and you only have so many times to download the game before you have to pay again, plus in the future say 20 years down the line, what if sony are out of the game or microsoft are and you can't download the games anymore?
the problem is game companies are spending less time on creating a complete product, and just maximizing profits, if digital comes up brick and motor stores will shut down as pre owned will end and they make 99% of their profits from that, plus digital = no competition, which = unregulated prices, and in turn is actually against uk anti competition regulation unless developers did their own download service and most cnt be arsed, lol i would have laughed whilst trying to keep a serious face!
hahahah, this is how the campagin should be short, sharp and sweet, i do agree about the lack of art, manuals and simply being able to collect it, but with pre owned games having no money to developers, no manuals or b n w white ones, it's going that way there look at steam on pc, im very against it but its inevitable the avg user buys and sells games and doesnt collect as well - personally i think future games won't be as bad digitally as the quality of the physical stuff manual etc wil be crap
@johnwilliamson47 Thanks John, I'm a man of few words lol. I would like the future to give the consumer the option of physical and digital, they seem hell bent on forcing a digital future on us. We need to rebel :)
@Snestastic Digital distribution is the most ridiculous thing ever say if i spend all my money on ps3 game downloads or wii games then the company goes bust in 2 years time then were left with nothing this will fail and if it doesnt piracy will sky rocket mate
@JoeTheUseless I agree dude, it's not a sensible approach at all. At the moment they are willing to supply both a physical copy as well as the digital download but you can probably agree that in the future they will want too only supply content digitally which is never going to be a good thing.
@Snestastic yer :-) more then likely they will do the best games only via digital download only too sort off blackmail the consumer into getting it as thats the only way they can its like im realy interested in the Metal gear solid HD Collection but i want a phisical disc imagine reading through a game manuel in adobe reader in PDF and logging in and out constantly some people might like it but for me i like shiny game cases and glossy manuels and i always love building my collections higher :-)
A 5 second video? I had to have a double-take when I saw that in my subs box, Pete lol
An age of digital only media doesn't sound good although eventually that's clearly what the industry want. If it does happen at least we'll have the old retro gear to physically collect though :)
haha, I'm with you on that mate. For some reason it seems many folk are all about this 'cloud' future and digital only pisses me off a bit. All the content should be physical copies too! Digital downloads etc are just corporations way of saving money while still charging full price AND destroy the second hand market! It's a nice alternative but not the way forward!
@iCrytex Here Here Lewis, look at how much Sony charge for a full new game on PSN as opposed to the price of the actual disc, it's ridiculous. Fancy doing a video response? Would be great to get lots of people showing their fingers, maybe we can get the message noticed :)

It looks a crap future if things go 100% digital, no more collecting, no more resale value at all which I thinks one of the worst things, how much have we spent on gaming over the years? Hopefully I'd never have to sell up but if I had to at least I could, if things were digital then I'd have no resale value at all, I cant understand how any cnosumer could possibly stand up for it.
craigsheree 1 month ago
@craigsheree Agreed Craig, I think as long as we can have both options the future will be bright. However we all understand that eventually the entertainment industry would prefer to go 100% digital and I understand their reasons but there are so many reasons not too do it.
Snestastic 1 month ago
If gaming ever goes fully digital I will give up gaming.

itrytohelpp 1 month ago
@itrytohelpp Thanks dude and thanks for the response as well :) I agree we need to have both options. It seems that the entertainment industry no longer want to pay attention to their consumers and just want too tell us how it's going too be. The best way is for us too vote with our wallets. I think Sony learnt their lesson when they released the PSPGO :)

KieranD212 1 month ago
@KieranD212 That's fine for the moment but no-one knows what the future holds and if those cloud services are gone in the future so are your backed up files.
Snestastic 1 month ago
@Snestastic Its more a problem for console users as pc users can copy data to as many devices as they like even backup to a disk ironically, its just like you say the service goes down then you can't log in and although steam has an offline mode so you dont need to log in once your key has been activated you do need to log in that once to activate a key.
pc games im forced to register my product key to play, even if i buy a disk, we will see in 10 years if the system works or not.
KieranD212 1 month ago
Its just about people who like to see stuff on a shelf, personally i like that with the retro but not for current. Delivery method means fuck all to me its all the same data. If its cheapest to buy the disk for the serial code i buy that if its cheaper to use a distribution service like Steam it ill use that. Most PC games are tied to steam as requiring you register the product key for use which is fine because then i have an online backup and all the features that come with steam like friends.
KieranD212 1 month ago
@KieranD212 It's not just that for me Kieran, I think about with games if 10, 20 years down the line there is no playstation or xbox all those games we have spent out money on are stored on our hard drives. If the console and hard drive die we lose everything and because sony and ms are no longer in the game we can't re-download the games. As far as streaming go's, the broadband in the UK needs a massive boost before that will work properly.
Snestastic 1 month ago
I prefer physical games because I can look at my shelf with pride.

antrite08 1 month ago
@antrite08 Agreed we need to have both options, I like to have a physical copy so that I can play the game or watch the movie anywhere anytime. If we have too rely on a streaming service the broadband isn't good enough yet, I don't want too watch a movie and have it keep buffering. Plus will they provide extras on a movie like we get with our dvd's and blu rays?
Snestastic 1 month ago
agree with you snestastic. nothing like having the real deal in our possession
much prefer playing my super nes, mega drive, c64, ps1 original and ps2 than using an emulator on a PC. they have their place but not for me.

I am all for digital content available online BUT I am not going to support 100% online distrobution at all ever. For games, I want the psychical copy. But for movies and music I would prefer to have both psychical and digital copies. I never really want to download something only since you can't sell it and I feel that I could be wasting money on something that you could get for free (that depends on the content).
marioandsonic1986 1 month ago
@marioandsonic1986 Agreed Josh, I like the triple pack blu rays for instance, the option to be able to watch the movie on a dvd/blu ray player but then too also be able to transfer a digital copy to a portable device. That's an intelligent approach I think.

Snestastic 1 month ago
I'm kinda mixed on this one. I'd say both physical copies and digital distribution have their benefits and negatives. Digital distribution is very convenient and space saving, but there is no guarantee that if something happens to the file that you can redownload it. On the other hand physical copies could go bad too, and there is not an unlimited amount of space to store them, but you can resell them. I'm not completely against digital distribution, but it has some kinks to work out.
cbrooks83 1 month ago
@cbrooks83 Me neither dude, I want to have the option to choose how I watch, listen or play my entertainment. I don't want too be told you now HAVE to download everything which is where I think the industry is trying too push us for the future. We need to be given the option of both physical and digital :)

i agree i prefer having the disc but i would be happy for there to be both I do think there are some great games on xbl and psn store that otherwise would not of been made because of the immense amount of money required to make an hd game. In the future downloads etc want be like that there easy to corupt .same with books we still got books in museums from 1600 you want have the sane for dugital in the future sorry if it makes no sence .

TheMike085 1 month ago
oh last point lol, there is good sonic generations is £9.99 on steam and most of it goes to sega and thats new, but! a problem is we keep being told 2nd hand games is piracy, as no money goes to developers and it's a lost sale and its theft, if you keep handing out shit games, crap manuals or no discs, ppl will boycott you and download it people will do it for mass effect 3 using origin, see how many ppl pirate that now because of it!, great vid pete :):), maybe i should have done this from a pm
johnwilliamson47 1 month ago
ill be honest i have a pc that can wipe the floor with consoles but i went to consoles for the moment, as i hate the digital trend, i have like 50 pc games and 3 of them are in my room, and that was enough for me to get a 360, 99% of gamers dnt want it, look at crysis on 360 1st 1, download only i love that game would have bought it but not now, why pay for some little code, which took like 1minute to manufacture, its a sad state, man im going off on one lol
johnwilliamson47 1 month ago
Totally agree pal, completely digital would be a disaster and from a collectors point of view or just gamer in general who likes a physical copy of a game too cherish it would just ruin everything. I do get the odd game on steam but would never buy digital products as a primary thing because i refuse too pay 29.99 for a game without getting a disc etc. I personally dont think it will happen completely but i do think they will be some clown that will try and push it. Totally with you. LIKE. :)
darrenj100882 1 month ago
@darrenj100882 Thanks Darren, same here, a couple of quid is one thing but I'm not willing to pay £30-£40 for a digital game that's just ridiculous. Please feel free to post a video response :)
Snestastic 1 month ago
steam will be around for a long time, but onlive will fail, also you have no rights to return via digital distribution, steam is a provider of content, a marketplace and doesnt generally deal in technical problems, games such as fallout 3 buggy, on steam ur allowed 1 refund/chance and that's really it, you buy it it's yours, legally its bad too, and you have no means to do what you want with the content, it's very restrictive, do game companies listen to consumers though look at ea :(
johnwilliamson47 1 month ago
i 100% agree onlive you don't own the titles despite paying full price for them, you own the right to play them whilst it's in service and like say downloadable indie titles on xbla what happens if it goes down the pan, ur totally right unlike a console you won't be able to play the games at all, microsoft actually say we don't "own" the games even if we buy them on a disc :S its all sorta like whats gona happen and none of us know, but discs provide some security, i personally think that
johnwilliamson47 1 month ago
@johnwilliamson47 Exactly John, that's why I never buy digital games no matter how good they are. You sometimes get an indy game released on disc but only if they are very successful on the digital xbla service 1st. They should just do both anyway so that everyone can have access to the games.

oh i know im going off on 1, but theres a lot of arguments to both, anyone who says digital isnt coming is an idiot! on pc the disc boxed games in the usa is dead, and dying in the uk, on steam you get games on release for say 29.99 then down the line in sales eg dead space 1 and 2 for 6.49, and it's doing very well, and it will happen, but i rather it didnt' as i like to own my stuff, digital in 5 years onlive in 10. sad to say :(, theres always retro!, and £2350,000 snes carts then lol.
johnwilliamson47 1 month ago
@johnwilliamson47 Of course we can't fight the inevitable but we can make our voices heard. I always worry about the future and if say in gaming the hard drive dies and you only have so many times to download the game before you have to pay again, plus in the future say 20 years down the line, what if sony are out of the game or microsoft are and you can't download the games anymore?

the problem is game companies are spending less time on creating a complete product, and just maximizing profits, if digital comes up brick and motor stores will shut down as pre owned will end and they make 99% of their profits from that, plus digital = no competition, which = unregulated prices, and in turn is actually against uk anti competition regulation unless developers did their own download service and most cnt be arsed, lol i would have laughed whilst trying to keep a serious face!

hahahah, this is how the campagin should be short, sharp and sweet, i do agree about the lack of art, manuals and simply being able to collect it, but with pre owned games having no money to developers, no manuals or b n w white ones, it's going that way there look at steam on pc, im very against it but its inevitable the avg user buys and sells games and doesnt collect as well - personally i think future games won't be as bad digitally as the quality of the physical stuff manual etc wil be crap
johnwilliamson47 1 month ago
@johnwilliamson47 Thanks John, I'm a man of few words lol. I would like the future to give the consumer the option of physical and digital, they seem hell bent on forcing a digital future on us. We need to rebel :)

@Snestastic Digital distribution is the most ridiculous thing ever say if i spend all my money on ps3 game downloads or wii games then the company goes bust in 2 years time then were left with nothing this will fail and if it doesnt piracy will sky rocket mate
JoeTheUseless 1 month ago
@JoeTheUseless I agree dude, it's not a sensible approach at all. At the moment they are willing to supply both a physical copy as well as the digital download but you can probably agree that in the future they will want too only supply content digitally which is never going to be a good thing.
Snestastic 1 month ago
@Snestastic yer :-) more then likely they will do the best games only via digital download only too sort off blackmail the consumer into getting it as thats the only way they can its like im realy interested in the Metal gear solid HD Collection but i want a phisical disc imagine reading through a game manuel in adobe reader in PDF and logging in and out constantly some people might like it but for me i like shiny game cases and glossy manuels and i always love building my collections higher :-)
