I started listening thinking this was fantastic- then as it drug on i thought, there's more to an aria than gorgeous high notes and went back to my favorite.. EILEEN FARRELL live from the Bell Telephone Hour.
This is gorgeous singing except for the obstrusive glottal attacks that mar the rendition. Caballe sang this aria much better in the later 1970 French Aria album for DG - although in the later version the final high b pianissimo is not quite as magical as this earlier recording.
I agree totally. I would even go so far as to say its almost vulgar the way she sings it here. She sounds way to "plummy". The recording however for DG is stunningly beautiful. Lots more piani than here- she really gets that floating feeling across. Anyway, interesting comparison. This is really the one fantastic effect of YT. For the opera scene it has been a revelation. So wonderful to be able to hear and compare recordings and a big thanks to the people like Onegin that keep it always coming.
I dont think this is strictly true. If you listen to Renata Tebaldi or Zinka Milanov you will see an abundance of wonderful pianissimos being produced. Kind regards my friend in music.
but I think what he means is that the pianissimi at the very top of her register (eg the high c in aida, the high d in lady macbeth sleepwalking scene) is simply unbelievable!
She is just marvellous ... and I don't think that her French is awfull. Conversely, I think that she has a good pronontiation. Montse has always had a funny way of pronouncing but also Spanish or Italian. Perhaps, one can think that this makes her French a little fancy
Absolutely beautiful! She is out of this world! If you love this, you might love Virginia Zeani's rendition of this aria; it's gorgeous, too, and her French is teriffic!
One word: pianissimo. You are a musical troglodyte. 4:45 no other singer in recording history can do this it is simply a musical miracle. Kind regards Mr OneGin this entire 1964 recital is simply a dream.
Ok her pianissimo es quite good, but l don't like it, you why, because she does not say the words, HEUREUSE, she makes a pianissimo with a vocal. . Caballé has been famous for it:. well what can l do,,shut up my mouth.!
i agree with you...and i do think that opera is not only about sound..the lyrics are important as well....but listen to that...its not just a pianissimo...its something from heaven to us....
Boy does she sound young! and her French is horrible, horrible! and the Tempo is so rediculously indulgent! and the technique is so impressive and voice so beautiful. Her diction and artisty matured a huge amount, the sign of a great professional. Only a great singer can simultaneously demonstrate such extremenes of brilliance and awfulness. I have to laugh and also be astounded.

the "filatos" are absolutely striking deeply and impressively moving.
I was in the audience of her concert at the Scala (30 years ago ;-(.... ) and she ends the concert with the Strauss wiegenlied: her breathing and pianissimo was just sovrumane; it was like she was singing whispering at each one ear. Mostly of people was crying, of joy.
Her recording of this aria on the "French Opera Arias"-album released at Deutsche Grammophon is much better! But nevertheless this recording is fantastic!
she sounds very young in this. Caballé has such a gorgeous tone and great sense of musicality. She's always such a pleasure to listen to.
